第十三讲:Module 12‎ 阅读完形训练 A Herbert and Zelmyra, couple from North Carolina got married about 80 years ago. They are the world’s longest-married living couple. Today, they’re still keeping strong, even at the ages of 104 (Herbert) and 102 (Zelmyra).‎ Zelmyra still remembers what Herbert was like when she first married him. “He was not cool; he was not a fighter,” she told the reporter. “He was quiet and kind.”‎ The couple was poor when they got married, but they worked hard to build a good life for their family. They had five children, and raised enough money to put them all through college. They have ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.‎ Though they’ve spent many years together, the couple takes care to give each other space: they go to different movies, and Zelmyra is always happy to turn over the TV to Herbert when the baseball comes on. They never fight.‎ If you want to know their secret of love, you’re in luck: on Valentine’s Day, the couple is planning to answer 14 questions about couple life. Have something to ask them? Just mail your question to @longestmarried by February 13th, and you might get their answer. We’re sure they’ll have better advice for you than Dr. Phil.‎ 1. How old is Herbert?‎ A. ‎80 years old. At last he lost his job. He hated hard work and didn’t want to stay in the city.‎ Once something was wrong with his ear. He had to see a doctor. ___1___. And five minutes later he had to pay the doctor twenty dollars. He thought it was easy to get much money. So he came to the small town and opened a hospital. ___2___. The following morning he heard that the traveler died in a hotel.‎ On the third day a young man came in and said, “Thank you very much, doctor!” ___4___ And he said, “I haven’t seen you before. Johnson was very surprised to hear that.‎ E. At first the people there knew nothing about him and they came to see him.‎ C When I first knew Mike, we lived in a small village in Scotland. It was very different from Mike’s life in London now. We went to school together on our bicycles. Every morning I went to his house and knocked on the door. Every morning Mike’s mom said “I’m sorry. He’s a bit late this morning”, and so I had to wait. Each day we were late for school, and I remember the teacher got very angry with us. I never told her we were late because of Mike. Now, 25 years later, I play tennis with Mike. I usually drive him to the tennis club. I go to his flat and he opens the door and says, “I’m sorry. I’m a bit late today.” The only reason he wasn’t late for his own wedding is that we lied to him about the time!‎ As boys we spent a lot of time out riding on our bikes. We went walking and fishing. I didn’t like fishing because I couldn’t swim. Probably the funniest thing we did was when we stole a bottle of whiskey from my Dad. We cycled about 5 miles away to drink it in one of our favourite places. When we finished drinking it, we couldn’t cycle back --- it was a long, slow walk. I’m sure we looked awful. We still do, when we come back from the pub on Friday nights. Nothing has changed really. Oh, and I still can’t swim.‎ 1. However, the whale shark wasn’t really killed by the fishermen. They saw it on the water with neither swimming nor feeling, in the Arabian Sea about 90 miles off the coast of Karachi for almost ten days, before it was finally pulled to the beach.‎ As you can dream, lifting the whale was no easy task. It took many people a few hours to get it out of the water. Then they began to sell the whale. After some bidding, the whale shark was finally sold for just about 18,800 dollars!‎ These huge animals belong to the shark family and are the largest fish. The longest whale ‎ shark was about 41.50 feet long. However, there have been some reports of ones even longer than that. Although they have large, scary mouths with about 300 teeth, these fish were really not dangerous to humans. They have even been known to allow swimmers to ride on them.‎ Whale sharks are usually found in warm waters. They can live up to 70 years in the sea. Unluckily, people have killed too many whale sharks because of accidents and money, as well as, less food for their growing population. Like a lot of other animals in the world, whale sharks are also in great danger.‎ 1. What was wrong with the whale shark?‎ A. It was killed by the fishermen. C. It was on the water without feeling.‎ B. It was too hungry to swim on. D. It really killed some fishermen.‎ 2.
