Grace Murray was born on December 9, 1906 in New York. In 1928 she finished her education at
Vassar College in math and physics. While she was teaching at Vassar College, she continued her
studies in math at Yale University, where she got an MA (硕士学位) in 1930 and a PhD (博士学
位) in 1934.
In 1930, Grace Murray married Vincent Foster Hopper. They were happy together for 15 years.
Grace taught at Vassar College till 1943, and then she joined the United States Navy during World
War Ⅱ. Then she worked for the Bureau of Computation Project at Harvard University, where
she worked on the MARK series of computers.
In 1945, she began to do research on applied physics at Harvard’s Computation Laboratory. In
1949 she joined the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation. 18 years later, she returned to the
Navy. She retired (退休) in 1971 but continued to work for the development of the computer.
Grace Murray died in her sleep in 1992. Since her death, her workmate Elenor Briggs has been

“Today my dream comes true. I have always wanted to be a Grand Slam (全胜) champion.”
These are the words of Chinese tennis player Li Na after she became the first Asian woman to
win a Grand Slam final in the French Open on June 4. Li Na was born on February 26, 1982. She
