For one week in April, millions of people chose not to watch TV for “TV Turnoff Week”.
TV Turnoff Week started in 1995 and is more popular every year. Many people discover that you can have a good time with the TV off. If that sounds crazy to you, just have a look at some numbers:
―An American teenager spends 900 hours every year at school; the same teenager spends 1,023 hours every year watching TV. That’s 2 hours 49 minutes every day.
―An average(平均)British person (not just teenagers) watches 3 hours 35 minutes every day.
―In the US, most TV has adverts. American children see 20,000 adverts every year. By age 65, an American has seen two million ads!
But some research from Britain says that may not be a problem. The London Business School watched people carefully during TV adverts and they discovered that people don’t watch a lot of the ads. The researchers discovered that the most common activity during the adverts was talking to other people in the room. Many other people started reading or doing housework or changed channels during adverts. They only really watched them about 25 per cent of the time.
51.During TV Turnoff Week, many people don’t __________.
A.watch TV B. change channels C. watch adverts D. do their school work
52.From the passage we can learn that __________.
A. American children see more adverts on TV than their parents
B. British people spend more than 3 hours a day in front of their TV
C. Researchers noticed that most people changed channels during ads
D. An American teenager spends more time at school than watching TV
53.The writer’s purpose is __________.
A. to advise us to spend less time on TV
B. to tell us how to avoid watching adverts
C. to show us how many adverts American TV has
D. to ask us to turn off TV during TV Turnoff Week
C
Last week I visited my friend Pete in the new home where he lives with his wife and daughter. Pete used to spend his holidays travelling the world, visiting the Louvre in Pairs or watching animals in Africa. Nowadays he prefers to spend his holidays and weekends making his house look more beautiful. Like hundreds of thousands of other British people, he has discovered the joy of DIY (Do It Yourself), which means if there are any things that need fixing around the house, he will try to do the job himself.
As he showed me the new kitchen he put together by himself and the newly painted walls, I asked Pete where he got the idea from. He told me that his favourite source of ideas was a DIY programme on TV.
This got me thinking about the popularity of DIY programmes in the UK. Nearly every channel has at least one home or garden makeover show and there’s even a DIY satellite channel.
I guess it is not really surprising that DIY programmes are so popular. Two common sayings in Britain – “an Englishman’s home is his castle” and “there’s no place like home” – show how important our houses are to us. With the recent economic downturn, many people can’t afford to buy a bigger house so they are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. DIY is the perfect choice.
But be careful! I read a report that said over 230,000 people were hurt while doing home improvements in the UK in just one year, including 41,000 who fell off steps and 5,800 who were seriously hurt by tools.
I won’t be going down to the hardware(五金)store. I’d rather watch DIY on TV with a nice
cup of tea!
54.The underlined phrase “put together” means __________.
A. painted B. cleaned C. built D. designed
55.People in the UK __________.
A. care little about their homes B. take DIY as an enjoyable job
C. like watching all TV programmes D. have enough money to spend on houses
56.From the last paragraph we can infer that the writer __________.
A. thinks DIY is a good way to relax B. likes watching DIY programmes
C. is becoming interested in DIY D. has no plan to do DIY himself
D
As many as one in five US teenagers have some degree of hearing loss(丧失), according to researchers. They say the problem is growing.
“Teenagers really don’t pay attention to how much noise they are exposed to(接触),” Josef Shargorodsky of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston told Reuters. “Often people won’t notice it, but even very little hearing loss may influence language development,” said Shargorodsky, one of the researchers.
The study compared surveys from the early 1990s and the mid-2000s. Each included a few thousand teenagers. In the first survey, about 15 percent of teenagers had some degree of hearing loss. Some 15 years later, that number had risen by a third, to nearly 20 percent.
“This certainly is big news,” said Alison Grimes, an ear doctor. “Hearing loss is very common in old people,” Grimes said, but she added that it was worrying to see it happen in the younger age group.
In babies and young children, hearing problems are known to slow language development. The science is less clear for teenagers, but it is easy to imagine how being hard of hearing could influence learning, said Grimes.
The reasons for the rise are still unclear. When researchers asked teenagers about noise exposure – on the job, at school or from activities, for example – the teenagers didn’t report any change. But Shargorodsky said that might not be true. “We know from before that it is difficult to ask this age group about noise exposure – they underestimate it.” Few people would call it noise when they listen to music on their MP3 player, for example. “There is a difference between what we think is loud and what is harmful to the ear,” said Grimes.
Although it’s not clear that the MP3 players cause teenagers’ hearing loss, Grimes said it was still a good idea to turn down the sound and take short breaks from listening.
57.The writer advises teenagers __________.
A. to turn the sound down B. to stop using MP3 players
C. to be clear about the problem D. to report the change in hearing loss
58.The underlined sentence “they underestimate it” means __________.
A. their love for music prevent them realizing the harm
B. their hearing loss is happening without being noticed
C. they think music can be taken as noise to some degree
D. they think it’s harmful sometimes although it’s not loud
59.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Hearing loss may lead to slow language development.
B. Hearing loss in old people is as common as in young people.
C. Researchers have already found some causes of hearing loss.
D. Teenagers know MP3 is harmful, but they can’t stop listening to it.
60.What is the best title for the passage?
A. A word short and simple B. A report by teenagers C. A message loud and clear D. A letter from MP3
users

Are you the kind of person who likes staying in unusual places? If the answer is “yes”, then try the world’s coldest hotel in Jukkasjarvi in the north of Sweden. But go in winter or all you’ll find is a pool of water, because the hotel melts every spring!
The man who runs the ARTic Hall Hotel is Nils Yngve Bergqvist. He is also the man whose idea it was. He built his first hotel for an art show in 1991 and he designed the present hotel – over 200 metres square – himself. It took workmen about two months to put 1,000 tons of snow onto a wooden board. As the weather got colder, the snow froze and then they removed the board. The whole building and everything in it is made of snow — except for the wooden front door. There’s a theatre, a jazz club, a radio station and a large ice bar. As you can imagine, hot drinks are popular with the guests! The rooms have no doors, there is no furniture, no heating and everyone sleeps on…yes, that’s right…ice beds. But the 800 people who have stayed at the hotel this winter seem to like it. If you want to stay in one of the ice rooms, it will cost you about £30 a night. You won’t be very comfortable, but you will receive a survival certificate(生存能力证书)from the manager!
When the winter is over, Nils holds his competition every year to predict the day that the hotel will fall. The person that guessed the day correctly last year received a large painting from an ARTic Hall show. Bergqvist’s ice hotels are becoming world– famous and he loves his work. He’s already excited about his next project — an ice hotel that will be bigger and better, he says.
65. Can you visit the ARTic Hall Hotel in summer?
66. Where is the ARTic Hall Hotel?
67. How much does the hotel cost for one night?
68. What will the manager do next?
69. Why is the ARTic Hall Hotel unusual?

Dear Steven,
I’m glad to hear that you will come to China soon. It’s great to stay with a Chinese family because Chinese people are very friendly. But there are some differences between Chinese people and American people. If you know these well, there will be no problem with your stay in a Chinese family.
First , don’t call the mother or the father’s name. They will be glad if you call them mum and dad. Second, prepare a little gift for the family. Give it to them when you get to their home. Third,
eat together. Remember, don’t start eating before the parents do at meals unless they ask you to do so. Above all, tell them beforehand if you can’t get home on time.
Take it easy. I’m sure you will get on well with them.
Yours,
Li Ping
