三、阅读(共两节,满分45分)
第一节:阅读理解。(共20小题,每题2分,满分40分)
(A)
After living and teaching in China for 10 months, my wife and I returned to California to visit our children and friends. Many of them asked what we liked most about China. The friendly people, the wonderful food, and the beautiful sights were at the top of our list. Then one night, after yet another restaurant dinner with friends, I realized that there was one other thing that I really liked about China: No tipping.
Tipping is a subject that has long interested me.
In America, the three kinds of services that require tipping are waiters/waitresses, taxidrivers, and barbers. The standard tip is now between 15 and 20 per cent of the bill, depending on the quality of service. Why these three particular services deserve this special treatment is a mystery to me. Why am I supposed to tip a waiter for bring me food when I don’t need to tip the flight attendant on an airplane for doing the same thing? Why do I need to tip a taxi drive, but not the bus driver? Why am I expected to tip the barber for cutting my hair but not the dentist for fixing my teeth? I have been a teacher for 39 years. No one has ever tipped me after a particularly successful class or lecture.
The whole concept of tipping doesn't make any sense. I have heard that there are some expensive restaurants in major
cities in the US where the restaurant does not give the waiters any salary at all due to the large amounts of the tips.
The tipping problem in many European countries is solved by adding a 15 per cent to the bill. I prefer the Chinese solution: No tipping at all.
When I was visiting the US this summer, I went out to dinner several times with friends. Having spent 10 month in China not even thinking about tipping, I found it irritating to have to spend extra money on the meal -- especially when the amount of the tip would every often buy a meal in China. While I understand why China, as a developing nation, has gradually accepted many Western customary practices, I hope the Chinese are wise enough to never start the unnecessary practice of tipping.
26.What made the writer realize that he liked no tipping most about China ?
A. Talking with his friends . B. Returning to California.

A. $20 B. $30 C. $50 D. $100
28.What’s the writers opinion on tipping in the US?
A. Wise B. Necessary C. Reasonable D. Annoying
29.Which of the sentences is true?
A. All kinds of services need tipping in the US . B. The writer hoped China would never start tipping .
C. The writers whole family lived in China for 10 months. D. China has never accepted any western customary practices
30.What can be the best title for the passage?

(B)
Many people take running as a way to keep fit. They like to run in hot weather and enjoy the feeling of being wet through with sweat while running. Cold weather during winter months, with low temperatures and freezing cold winds, may keep many people from running in the open air .
However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance. Many runners might find it easier to run in winter than in hot weather.
Lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower .And the body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather because dehydration levels are lower in winter than in warmer conditions .
John Brewer is a professor of applied sports science at ST. Mary ‘s University in London. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room where summer and winter weather conditions are recreated. The test subjects, were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions and their biological measurements were recorded and studied.
From the study, every movement runners make produces heat .The heat can be really damaging unless the body can lose it .One way in which people lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through droplets of sweet. The body also loses it by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin and it puts more stress on the heart, particularly in hot conditions because it’s much harder to lose heat when the outside environment is warm. As the result shows running in hot temperatures results in 6 percent higher heart rates.
When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to pump blood to the skin surface .Therefore, it requires less energy. The most important things for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keep as dry as possible when exercising in low temperatures. Wear mittens on your hands instead of gloves. Wear more than one layer of clothing to keep sweat away from your skin.So don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.

34.What should people wear while running in cold winter?
A. A hat . B. Gloves. C. More clothing. D. More than one layer of clothing

A. To tell people not to run in summer . B. To describe how runners run in winter .
C. To encourage people to run outdoors in winter. D. To compare the advantages of running in winter and in summer.
