A
One cold day last November, my wife and I came home from work to a sick young daughter and we decided to stay at home for the night. Problem was, we had two tickets to see Miranda July, the performance artist, being interviewed at the Herbst Theatre. We decided to sell them online for $50. One hour before the event, a guy named Peter called me and said he wanted to buy the tickets. Since the time was limited, I told Peter to pay me the next day. Peter seemed touched and we said a fond goodbye.
However, a month later, Peter still didn’t pay me back. A few more weeks passed. Another month. There’d been one e-mail promising to mail the check, then silence.
Maybe he was having a hard time, I thought. But truth was, Peter seemed to be having a pretty normal time. According to the pictures and messages on his Facebook, he had been playing golf, dancing happily with his friends, and traveling on a boat. But he just refused to answer my calls, or reply to my e-mails or messages. So I tried reaching him with my wife’s phone one night. And he didn’t pick up when I called, but texted right back, playfully wondering who might be calling him.
“You should go to his office,”my wife said, “He would have to give you the money if all his coworkers were watching.”
But I didn’t want to become a debt collector. My efforts to reach Peter over these months had been light and I wanted to keep it that way. My initial exchange with Peter had been just two regular people agreeing to handle things humanly. There was a rare niceness in that, and I still wanted to keep that balloon in the air, however disappointing it was starting to look. I wanted to believe we could still trust each other.

A. Because he didn’t remember it.
B. Because he was too busy to pay.
C. Because he didn’t want to pay.
D. Because he was having a tough time.
4.What can we infer about the author?

To most people, noise pollution is a jet flying over their head. For one Spanish woman,it is a neighbor playing the piano. The woman has taken her neighbor to court. Now she wants to send her neighbor to prison for over seven years on the charges of psychological damage and noise pollution.
In a country known for its noisiness, the case has raised eyebrows.Neighbors often complain about street noise in Spain, but people seeking prison time for someone practicing the piano is unheard of.At the trial,Sonia Bosom says she has been suffering noise pollution up to now due to the practice sessions of Laia Martin, who lives below her.Martin,27,didn’t admit that she played at home that often, saying she took regular classes in other towns and mostly practiced at home on the weekends.
On the first day of the trial, the newspaper reported that Bosom told the court she now hated pianos so much that she couldn’t even stand seeing them in a film.
Bosom says years of hearing constant playing has caused her “psychological injury”.Medical reports show she has suffered from a variety of problems, including insomnia(失眠),anxiety, and panic attacks.
She says tests by local authorities have found that the sound levels made by the piano are up to 10 decibels(分贝) higher than the limit.City authorities have asked the family several times to either stop the piano playing or soundproof(隔音) the room. The family told the court they carried out soundproofing work twice but the complaints continued.

In the late 1990s, a family visited the school where I taught deaf students. They said they would be moving here and planned to send their deaf daughter to my school as a first grader. They were upset that their child’s kindergarten teacher told them not to have high hopes for her. The teacher painted a bleak (暗淡的) picture for their little girl’s future. Standing behind them was Katherine, a beautiful five-year-old with long hair and dark eyes. The whole time her parents were there she didn’t make a sound or use sign language, even when her parents asked her to do so.
After a few weeks with Katherine, I discovered I was dealing with a very bright child. Although I was able to make her join in different learning activities, writing was always a struggle. I tried all kinds of methods to interest her in writing. Every time the pencils came out, she would refuse to write.
One day Katherine got off her bus and stood in front of the school crying. The teachers there did not know enough sign language to ask her what happened. They called the bus driver back to school and soon Katherine got her backpack back.

As the November cold begins to take control in the UK,Bonfire Night (or Guy Fawkes
11
Night) is a chance to wrap up in winter clothes and warm up by the fire.
Celebrated on November 5,Guy Fawkes Night has been part of British history since 1605,when Fawkes was found trying to blow up parliament(议会) with barrels of gunpowder. Now,it is traditional for Britons to make a fake(假的)“Guy”every year from old clothes and burn it on the fire.
If you visit a small town in the southwest of the country, you might see men from the village run through the crowded streets with huge wooden barrels on their backs, then fill them with tar(焦油) and set them on fire. And in Lewes,a town in the southern English county of Sussex, different groups of bonfire societies parade(游行) the streets, each wearing their own unique outfits and carrying a giant mascot(吉祥物),which they burn at their own bonfire party at the end of the evening.
Bonfire Night is also a time for “chili con carne”,a dish made from slowcooked beef mince, tomatoes, kidney beans, onions, and spices. It is often served on top of a hot jacket potato with butter and cheese. It’s not the most elegant dish in the world but it’s sure to warm people up while they brave the cold for the festivities.
But for many Britons, the night is not complete without “bonfire treacle toffee(太妃糖)”,which is also known as “plot toffee”,named after Guy Fawkes’ plot to blow up parliament. The toffee is rock hard and is often broken with a hammer and handed out to guests.
Whether it’s the sound of fireworks making Britain sound like a war zone, the hearty winter food,or the excuse to light a huge fire,Bonfire Night has something for everyone.Just watch out for those rockets!

A.A person to explode the parliament.

People who possess high selfesteem are able to commit better and produce a greater bond in relationships with others. Dr. Douglas feels that most people do not value themselves, but with love and selfrespect anyone can be above normality and grasp success with the family, the office, or others.
We have become too reliant on intelligence, beauty, and money for our own selfesteem. The loss of esteem reduces the will and ability to set and reach goals. In a series of reading Douglas teaches how to avoid negative statements, how to change them into selffacing behavior, and how to take charge of your mental attitude. Where other motivational and selfhelp work stops with the theoretical plan for success, Douglas takes everyday examples and puts them into his books. From raising children who believe in themselves to using selfesteem to help bridge the
11
gap in the workplace, he gives readers concrete solutions to the problems that might ruin their interpersonal relations.
Selfesteem building comes from filling your thoughts with positive affirmations(肯定) and learning to react to failures with motivation instead of selfdestruction. These lessons are valuable for anyone who feels that life is even slightly out of control. People who feel they have adequate esteem can learn to use it to make their success grander, faster, and more beneficial for others. Douglas approaches this process of selfdevelopment as a means of more than creating good things for the individual but also for setting up keys for influencing good things for others.
For more than thirty years, Dr. Douglas has addressed more than two million people on topics from time management to speaking effectively to raising drugfree children. He is the author of fifteen books, including How to Make a Habit of Succeeding.
1.What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A.Most people behave well enough.
B.Selfrespect means being above normality.

D.Committing better equals greater success.
2.Why does Douglas put everyday examples into his books?
A.To be reliant on selfesteem.
B.To set and reach goals.
C.To avoid negative thoughts.
D.To offer concrete solutions.
3.What does the author advise those whose life is slightly out of control to do?
A.Learn to be positive.
B.Face it unmotivatedly.
C.Admit selfdestruction.
D.Ask for help.
4.What’s the most important to be selfdevelopment?
A.Influencing the individual.
