Monarch Butterflies
One of the last West Coast homes of the Monarch butterfly,a type of insect(昆虫),may soon disappear.Strangely,it is in a town that calls itself Butterfly U.S.A,Pacific Grove, California.
The town of Pacific Grove loves the butterflies.Every year they have a parade(游行)and hundreds of children dress up as butterflies.Monarch butterflies are the town mascot.Tourism is very important, and many people come to see the butterflies. The butterflies are good for the development of the town.
In 1981 there were so many butterflies it looked like it was raining butterflies.Tens of thousands of Monarchs stayed on tree branches near Pacific Grove. Now there are not so many.
The building goes on a little bit at a time, and you don’t notice it day by day.Over time, you can see that there has been a lot of development. As new buildings go up,many trees are cut down.
This reduces the natural homes for the butterflies.
Monarchs travel hundreds of miles each year, returning to the same woods, often to the same trees. The female Monarchs need milkweed to lay their eggs;the males will follow the females.
Millions of Monarchs have traveled regularly along the same path for thousands of years. They start their trip in the mountains of Mexico and travel to the middle part of America. If the woods where the butterflies live are destroyed, the whole species(物种)could be lost. There have been Monarch butterflies along the coast of California for as long as man can remember, but no one is sure how much longer they will last.

Zebras are members of the horse family and are among the most recognizable of all mammals. Their bodies are well adapted to their surroundings. Zebras are best known for their distinctive white and black stripes, which come in different patterns unique to each individual. Their stripes are a form of disruptive coloration that breaks up the outline of the body, so it is difficult to make them out, particularly in the dawn light when attackers are most active.
They are very courageous animals and are not afraid of attackers. They have excellent
hearing and eyesight. Zebras have long, thin legs and are capable of running, so they can make quick, efficient escapes from attackers. Zebras also have a powerful kick which can cause serious injury to an attacker such as a lion, a big cat or wild dogs.
Zebras communicate with each other with sounds and facial expressions, making loud barking sounds and soft sounds. The position of a zebra’s ears and how wide open their eyes are and whether their mouths are open or their teeth are bared, all mean something. For example, when their ears are laid flat in a backwards position it means they mean business or to the other members of the group—you had better follow orders.
They live in family groups of between 5-20 individuals and stay in these family groups for many years. If one of the family group is lost, the rest of the group will spend many days looking for it. If a member of the group becomes sick or is injured, the rest of the group will adjust its pace to adapt to it.
40. According to the text, zebras _______.
A. have invisible stripes at dark
B. convey information with sounds
C. protect themselves by moving often
D. kill their attackers by a sudden kick
41. Why can the stripes of zebras help them protect themselves?
A. Because the stripes make them look more courageous.
B. Because the stripes make them look the same at night.
C. Because the stripes make it easy for them to attack enemies.
D. Because the stripes make it difficult to see them.
42. It can be inferred from the text that zebras _______.
A. are well-known for being friendly animals
B. help each other when they are in difficulty
C. love running in all directions
D. like attacking enemies at night
43. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To tell people how to hunt zebras.
B. To let people know about zebras.
C. To call on people to protect zebras.
D. To make people interested in zebras.
C
My bookshelves are full of dust—and with good reason. When iIt comes to cleaning that
part of my home,I suffer from the most serious case of avoidance(回避反应症).
The thing is this:When I do set out to clean and re-organize my books, which seldom happens,I place myself into a really bad situation. No sooner do I take a title from the shelf, blow off the dust, and wipe down the cover than I find myself sitting on the floor with legs crossed and my back against the wall.Pretty soon books get piled up on my legs as I am reunited with old friends.
It is as if these boobs have voices, and each wants to say its piece.“Remember me?I was
given to you when you went into the Navy , so that you would never lack for companionship,”
one whispers.Another says,“I was your first book of poems, given to you before you learned to love poetry.”And a third,“I was the book that made history so attrctive to you.
Perhaps the greatest pleasure of re-organizing my books are the surprise—or better said, reunions—that occur. During my latest book cleaning adventure,I found one that had fallen behind the shelf:“Tales of Edgar Allan Poe.”Not an unusual title, but the words written on the first page made it very special“With Love from Mom and Dad,Christmas 1965.” What’s this? A book on the physics of lasers(激光).It is filled with mathematical statements, and I had bought it at a library sale when I was 12,not long after the laser had been invented.I couldn’t understand a bit of it,but I did learn what “laser” meant.
What I end up with when I empty my bookshelves is a cross-section(横剖面)of my personal history. It’s like a road cut where one sees all the layers of rock going back through time to the beginning of the simplest life forms. The books I’ve read—and kept—are not just old fiends. They’ re my resume.
44. What could be said about the author?
A.He is too busy to tidy up his bookshelves.
B.He considers his books treasured possessions.
C.He has made a lot of notes in his book.
D.He is a lover of science books.
45. By saying that his book have voices, the author means_________.
A.they bring back happy memories
B.they are recorded in human voice
C.they say a lot about human history
D.they offer good topic for discussion
46. What does the author enjoy most from re-orgnazining his books?
A.Finding some missing books.
B.Putting books in good order.
C.Learning something new from the books,
D.Rediscovering interesting stories behind some books.
47. The underlined word “resume” in the last paragraph probably means_______.
A. personal history
B. precious notes
C. good companion
D. simple life forms

Open-Book Tests
Although the words “Open-Book Test” may sound great, in reality the test may be quite difficult. 51 Some open-book tests are taken home while some are given in the classroom.
52 You need to be able to locate the information you need in your textbook or notes quickly. Always stay up on classroom readings and assignments(作业). Make brief summaries of the major ideas or concepts taught. Be selective about what you bring to the test. Make sure that you have everything that you need.
53 It may help to list dates, data or formulas separately so the ideas can be retrieved(找回) quickly. You may have developed your own system of organization for your notes; just be sure that everything you need will be marked.
Be sure to read the questions on the test carefully, so you will give the answers that are needed. Don’t waste your time. Answer the easier questions first, then move on to the more
difficult ones. Don’t practice overkill(过度). Answer what needs to be answered. 54 It often helps to give quotations, but you must be certain to give the correct citation(引用). Don’t do this too much or the work will not be yours. 55
A. You do not have to give every fact in your head.
B. When the test is near, you should pay close attention in class to clues as to what may be on the test.
C. An open-book test is measuring your understanding of the subject, not just your memory.
D. Read over your answers and make any necessary corrections.
E. A test shows your understanding of the subject and your ability to perform certain actions.
F. It is a good idea to have your materials organized before the test.

Last Sunday I saw the worst storm in years. It came sudden and went on for over three hours. After lunch, I went into my rooms to have a rest. The air was hotter, and all is quiet. Then a strong wind started to blow into my room. Pieces of paper on my desk flew high into the air and some flew out of the opening window. As I ran out to catch them, big drop of rain began to fall.
