In this part, you are required to watch a video clip and read after the speaker in the video.
The modern city is a new kind of nature, man-made nature. It reflects back an image of ourselves through the things we have designed. But for the designer, the world is not enough. Plans for a new, improved version are always on the drawing board. At the Home Exhibition in London, people come and go, dreaming about new labor-saving devices, new possibilities, new designs for living. Not everything here is a design classic, but everything here has been designed to meet a need, fulfill a desire, or simply to raise a cheer at the breakfast table. (61”)

Part B

W: Hi, Tom! Where have you been during the holiday?
M: Oh, I spent fifteen days with my family back in my hometown.
W: That must be very relaxing. You were in your comfort zone again.
M: You are right. Staying with family and relatives is always quite comfortable, especially when you have a big family.
W: Oh… So you’ve grown up in a big family? How many brothers and sisters do you have?
M: I have three brothers and four sisters.
三问部分:
Question 1: What was it like growing up in a big family?/ How did you like growing up in a big family?/ What was growing up in a big family like?
Answer 1: I love having such a big family. There were many sweet memories about those years growing up with my brothers and sisters. We played games together and went to school together and it was our family tradition to give everybody a surprise on his or her birthday. But at times, it could be a little crowded as we all live together in a small house when we were young.
Question 2: What was the most difficult part?/ What was the hardest part?/ What was the toughest part?/ What was the most difficult thing?/ What was the hardest thing?/ What was the toughest thing?
Answer 2: I think it was that we didn’t have enough money to make sure that everybody ate well and dressed well. My elder brothers and sisters had a little tougher life than we did, because they had to work a lot to help with the family income.
Question 3: Are younger children luckier than the elder children?/ Are younger children more fortunate than the elder children?
Answer 3: Yes. I think for the most part, the younger ones are luckier, because they have more people to look up to and tell them right from wrong, which is a great help. As for the elder children, they have to help support the family and look after the younger ones. So usually, they have more responsibilities.

The Goose Thief
Tom went to primary school in the countryside. Near his classroom, there was a small pond where two geese were raised. Students were all fond of them.
One day, when Tom passed the school kitchen, he heard the cooks talking about killing the geese for the teacher’s Christmas dinner. Tom got angry and said to himself, “I won’t let them be eaten.” That night, Tom worked out a plan. He was going to hide them somewhere far away from the school. The next morning, Tom went to school in his father’s big coat. During the break, he rushed to the pond. Without anyone around, he called the geese and pushed them inside the coat. However, the geese were larger than he had thought and they tried very hard to free themselves from the coat. The big noise called the notice of the head teacher and the students. And they all ran to the pond. The head teacher asked for an explanation. Looking at the teacher with fear, Tom told the story and said, “It is unfair to them. We all love them.” The head teacher smiled and promised not to have them killed for the Christmas dinner.

Question 1: How was the school when you were twelve?/ What was the school like when you were twelve?

Answer 2: It’s hard to say. I just wonder if he will play games with his friends in the park. Actually, it worries me that kids don’t play sports freely as we did. You know, things change quickly these days.
Question 3: What will the biggest change be?/ What is the biggest change going to be?/ What can the biggest change be?/ What will the greatest change be?/ What is the greatest change going to be?/ What can the greatest change be?

Time and Trust
Tom was invited by a university in New York City for a job interview which was set at 10:00 a.m. Tom had never been to the city and he wasn’t aware of the heavy morning traffic. When he was nearing the downtown, his bus was only able to move forward at a very slow pace with so many cars on the road. So he reached the university an hour late and missed the interview. Fortunately, he was offered another interview which was again at 10:00 a.m. two days later. Tom was very embarrassed about being late and decided that it would never happen again. So he started out very early on the day of the second interview. It was a freezing winter morning and Tom made his way in the falling snow. He reached the university two hours earlier and waited at the gate of the building. When the director came to work, he was surprised to see Tom so early. Tom explained that he did not want to be late again. The director called him in and gave him an offer right away, saying that a man who cared so much about time should be trusted.

I bet you can’t guess what this is. It looks strange. It could be a piece of art or, perhaps, a dead tree that’s fallen over, but this used to be underground. It might be hard to imagine, but this used to be a rabbits’ home, a warren. And these are tunnels and rooms which we call chambers. We poured concrete into an old warren. Then we waited until the concrete went hard and then we dug around the soil so we could see the shape of the warren. So what you’re looking at now is a warren from the outside. And it’s amazing. Mary’s Doll
Mary loved dolls but never had one. Every time she asked her mom to buy her a doll, she was rejected, because her mom had to raise three kids and was nearly able to make a living. The day before her birthday, Mary tried to persuade her mom again, and said, “All my friends have their own dolls.” She really wanted to have one, but her mom didn’t say a word, which made Mary very upset. At midnight, Mary slept into her mom’s bedroom. She quickly put her hand into her mom’s purse, took out some money, put it in a secret place and went back to sleep again. The next morning, Mary woke up in excitement, because she was going to buy herself a doll. But at breakfast, she saw on the table a nice doll dressed in beautiful clothes. “Happy birthday, Mary. This is a doll I made for you,” her mother said to her happily. Knowing her mom had been working on it for two weeks, Mary felt ashamed that she shouldn’t have taken the money. In tears, she told her mom the truth and promised she would not do such a thing again.

Tom was happily traveling down to town in his expensive new car. Attracted by the scenery, he slowed down. Suddenly, something hit the side door of the car. Tom stopped the car, stepped out, and found it was a shoe. He looked around and saw a little girl with one bare foot. He believed it was the girl who threw the shoe at his car. He was angry, walked to her and shouted, “Why did you do it? It is a new car. Don’t you know it is expensive?” The girl tried to explain but was unable to speak. With tears in her eyes, she tried her best to make gestures. It seemed that she wanted to take Tom somewhere. In the direction she was pointing to, Tom saw a big boy lying on the ground, a wheelchair beside him. Tom realized the girl was asking for help. W: It is very interesting. Dr. Brown’s class is always very popular among the students.
M: You must like it very much.
W: Sure. I’ve learned so many new things in his class. It provides me with new ways to understand people and arouses my research interest.
M: It sounds really fun. What’s it about?
W: It’s about the differences between men and women in behavior, psychology and so on.
M: Oh. How long have you been taking the course?
W: For two months. Each week we have a 45-minute class. We finished half of our text book. I’m learning to observe people from different angles.
三问部分:
Question 1: What do you learn from the course?/ What do you study from the course?
Answer 1: I’ve learned that men and women are different in many aspects. For example, generally, men are physically stronger than women. And women do better than men in learning languages.
Question 2: How do you know that women can do better in learning languages?
Answer 2: Well, research shows that baby girls usually pick up language earlier and they are better at it than baby boys. And usually there are many more girls than boys in language schools. For example, in our English department, there are 80 girls and only 28 boys.
Question 3: What are the differences in their behaviors?/ What is the difference about their behaviors?
Answer 3: That’s even more interesting. Usually, men tend to use more direct body language, stand more still and occupy more space. Dr. Brown tells us that on many business occasions, this body language shows power and certainty. So many businesswomen tend to use this manly body language.

A Dog to the Rescue
Mary kept a dog and always considered him a good companion. Wherever Mary went, she brought the dog along, going shopping, working in the garden or having dinner with friends. Mary was an adventurous sports fan. And one day, Mary went to a big mountain with the dog for camping. Unfortunately, when she was taking some pictures of the beautiful scenery, she fell down from a rock and broke her leg. She yelled for help, but no one heard her cries. The dog knew that Mary was in trouble. He ran a long way to the main road, trying to stop passing cars, but he failed. He hurried back to the camp to see how Mary was, only to find her yelling in great pain. Again, the dog went back to the road, lay down on the road and stuck his feet in the air. Finally, a car stopped and the driver got out and followed the dog to where Mary was. The driver found Mary lying on the ground, pale and weak. He sent her to a hospital immediately. Three months later, Mary recovered and she knew she owed much to the dog.
