Advertising gives useful information about which products to buy. But modern advertising does more than gives news about products and services. Today’s advertisements , or ads, try to get consumers(消费者) to buy certain brands(品牌) . Writers of advertising are so skillful that they can. sometimes persuade a consumer to wear a certain kind of clothing, eat a special kind of cereal(麦片) , or see a movie. Consumers might never even want a product if they did not see or hear advertisements for it.
For example, you probab1y do not need the newest cereal in the supermarket. There are probably many cereal brands on your kitchen shelves. You may not have space on a shelf for
another. But if you see ads about a new cereal that is your extra-tasty and has a free prize in the box, you may want it.
Advertising must get attention. To be effective, it must be exciting, entertaining, or provide some pleasure. The secret of writing good advertising copy is to offer a good idea as well as a product. The idea is what the ad is really selling. One example is an ad that says eating a certain cereal will make a person do well in sports. That cereal brand may sell better if consumers think it offers strength and energy.

A. Customers can easily be persuaded by advertisements.
B. Customers should be persuaded by advertisements.
C. It’s impossible for customers to buy a product without advertisements.
D. Customers buy products according to their demands rather than the advertisements.

Boxing was long viewed sickly. Generally forbidden by law in earlier days, the fighting was usually done with bare fists, and matches often lasted forty or fifty rounds.
In 1882 John L. Sullivan, a fighter of great power, won the world heavyweight championship from Paddy Ryan in a bare fisted battle marked by hitting, scratching, and biting without any rule. Five years later, while fighting Patsy Cardiff at Minneapolis, Sullivan broke his right arm in the third round, but he continued fighting to the sixth round and won. In 1889, Sullivan defeated Jade Kilrain with his bare fists in another championship fight, winning twenty thousand dollars and a diamond prize medal. His admirers talked then of running him for the next governor, but he traveled to Australia for a boxing tour instead, coming back only to lose his title in a twenty-one-round match with a young Californian named James J. Corbett.
“Gentleman James” victory in this match marked a turning point, for it showed scientific boxing was over strength. But Corbett’s title ended in 1897, when another boxer, Bob Fitzsimmons, in less than three seconds, achieved his feats and then Fitzsimmons knocked out an Irishman, won the heavyweight championship of the world, and invented the terrible “solar plexus punch.”

Sports shoes that tell whether their owner has enough exercise to warrant time in front of the television have been designed in the UK.
The shoes—named Square Eyes—contain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how many evening viewing time the wearer deserves, based on the day’s efforts.
The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the reapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project a Brunel University to London, UK. “We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out,” she says, “And I wanted to tackle that with my desigh.”
Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically switches off. And further time in front of the TV can onloy be earned through more steps.
Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So , every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisly one minute of TV time.
Existing pedometers(计步器) normally clip onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps by measuring sudden movement. Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through shaking. But her show has been built to be harder for lazy teenagers to cheat. “It is possible, but it would be a lot of effort,” she says. “That ws one of my main design consideration.”
64. According to Swan, the purpose of her design project is to ________.
A. keep a record of the steps of the wearer
B. deal with overweight among teenagers
C. enable children to resist the temptation of TV.
D. pervent children from being tricked by TV programs.
65. Which of the following is true of Square Eyes shoes?
A. They regulate a child’s evening TV viewing time.
B. They determine a child’s daily pocket money.
C. They have raised the hot issue of overweight.
D. They contain information of the receiver.
66. What is stressed by health experts in their suggestions?
A. The exact number of steps to be taken.
B. The precise number of hours spent on TV.
C. The proper amount of daily exercise and TV time.
D. The way of changing steps into TV watching time.
67. Compared with other similar products, the new design _________.
A. makes it difficult for lazy teenagers to cheat
B. counts the wearer’s seps through shaking
C. records the sudden movement of the wearer
D. sends teenagers’ health data to the receiver
68. Which of the following would be the best title of the text?
A. Smart Shoes Decide on Television Time
B. Smart Shoes Guarantee More Exercise
C. Smart Shoes Measures Time of Exercise
D. Smart Shoes Stop Childhood Overweight

Today just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have undergone an “agricultural ”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power. One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for hog producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make startling changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers ofe r the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete
mobilization of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.
69. Which sentence carried the main idea of the whole passage?

A. how much money they can earn from their products
B. whether to plant a certain kind of crop
C. what livestock to raise
D. when to sell their products
71. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers.

第二节 阅读简答(共3小题,满分6分)
If you are in any major city in America, the chances are high that you are not far from a Starbucks. In fact, you might be very close to several of these coffee stores. The company started in the West Coast city of Seattle, Washington, in 1971. Starbucks was named after a character in the famous American novel “Moby-Dick” by Herman Melville. Today, there are more than twelve thousand Starbucks around the world.
Sales last year were almost eight billion dollars. The company believes in opening many stores in busy areas of cities. For example, there are about thirty Starbucks stores in downtown Seattle. Recently, three Starbucks opened in the area near VOA headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Starbucks sells more than just plain coffee. It started a whole coffee culture with its own special language and coffee workers called baristas. It sells many kinds of hot and cold coffee drinks, like White Chocolate Mocha and Frappuccino. It also sells music albums, coffee makers, food, and even books. But most of all, it sells the idea of being a warm and friendly place for people to sit, read or talk.
Starbucks is a great success story. Buyers are willing to pay as much as five dollars for a coffee drink. People we talked to said they go to Starbucks because they can depend on it to have exactly what they want and to be nearby.
However, some people do not like the company's aggressive expansion. Owners of independent coffee stores cannot compete with Starbucks. One small coffee seller is taking the company to court. She says the way the company does business is illegal because it stops property owners from leasing stores to other coffee companies. She sees Starbucks as controlling the market and forcing out competition.
73. Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “baristas”。
74. What do people think of Starbucks? (回答词数不超过8个)
75. According to some people, what will be the result of Starbucks’ action? (回答词数不超过6个)

Make time for yourself
Schedule time for both work and entertainment. Don’t forget, play can be just as important to you over-all well-being as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go window-shopping or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.
Make a list of the things you need to do
Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that “ there’s so much to do, and not enough time”. Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. I looked them up in the card catalogue and went right to the shelves and found them. So I put them in my book-bag and headed back towards the door. Then it happened. The exit gate in front of the door wouldn’t open and a guard immediately warned me that I hadn’t checked out my books. He thought I was trying to steal them.

M: I think that’s what I want. How much is it?
W: It’s …forty dollars.

M: Right, I see.
W: So after three months I moved out and now I live with two other students in a student house. It’s much cheaper and we like it there.
M: Good, and what about your studies? What are you studying?
W: I’m doing computing.
M: Computing. I see. Um, apart from the language difficulties, how have you found the course?
W: Well, the main difficulty for me is getting time on the computers in the computer room. It’s always busy and this makes it very hard to do my practical work.
M: Can you reserve time in the computer room?
W: No, but it would certainly help if we could reserve computer time.

Wednesday afternoon or evening. I will be in my room then. If you cannot make it on Wednesday, I will be free on Thursday morning and Friday evening. Please fix a time and give me a ring. By the way, I have left the research plan with Professor Smith’s suggestion at Linda’s place. Please pick it up and have a look before discussion.
