For 30 years, Randy J. Murphy drove without being stopped by the police—and without a driver’s license (驾驶执照).
The 46-year-old man’s luck came to an end last May. On his way home from his job as a dishwasher, he turned up the radio in the car.
“I just turned the corner, and there was Mark,” Murphy said of the police officer who has since made such a difference in his life.
Officer Mark Taylor had stopped the car as he heard the blaring (震耳的) music. When he asked for a driver’s license, Murphy said that he didn’t have one.
Murphy told Taylor he couldn’t read well enough to tale the written part of the licensing test. “He said people just don’t help anymore. I told him if he was willing, I’d help him,” said Taylor. He gave Murphy his phone number. That afternoon Murphy called the officer.
For the next three months, the men met several times a week to review the questions which might appear in the test. When Murphy took the test, Taylor went with him. Murphy passed on his sixth attempt (尝试). He then sailed through the road test. On September 5, he got his license.
Taylor’s act of kindness won him the Officer of the Month award(奖) from the Knoxville Police Department. “People should help each other if they can,” Taylor said. “Randy did all the work. I just guided him along.”
Although Murphy has overcome the difficulty that kept him from getting a driver’s license, he hasn’t stopped there. “We still meet once a week to read,” Taylor said. “We’ve also become friends.”
“I’m glad he pulled me over now,” said Murphy.
( )51. Murphy was stopped by Taylor because_________.

D. to stop him from doing silly things

You start to introduce an old friend to someone, and suddenly you can’t remember that someone’s name even though you sense it is just there in your memory. Or you can’t quite bring back the name of a film you just saw. Such tip-of-the-tongue or TOT incidents happen to almost everyone, notes Deborah Burke, a scientist at Pomona College in Claremont, California.
These lapses(失误) have noting to do with remembering the meaning of a word, but rather with its sound. “Often, the sound of a word is arbitrary (任意的) and senseless,” says Burke. This arbitrariness sometimes can make it difficult to bring back the word.
The best way to prevent the problem is to use the name of a person or object as frequently as possible. “I tell people to do what salespeople often do-repeat people’s name several times just before you plan to see them,” says Liz Zelinski of the University of South California in Los Angeles.
A TOT experience can seem worse when a similar-sounding(发音相似的),but incorrect, word comes into your head unexpectedly and stays there. Burke tells the story of a student who was trying to remember the name of a particular car. The student wanted the word Winnebago, but she could only come up with rutabaga. When this happens, think of something else, suggests Burke. “If you stop feeling worried about it, the correct word sooner or later will come to you.”
( )55. People sometimes find it hard to bring back a word they know well, for __________.
A. it is impossible to remember every word
B. the pronunciation seldom matches the spelling
C. some words do not have any exact meaning
D. its sound is decided for no good reason
( )56. TOT incidents are more likely to happen ________.
A. with words similar in pronunciation
B. with the name of a strange person or object
C. when a word you don’t like gets into your mind
D. when you pay too much attention to certain subjects
( )57. When you cannot come up with the right word you’re trying to remember, you may ______.
A. think of more words of similar sound
B. stop feeling worried but keep thinking of it
C. do something else for a while and then try again
D. forget it for the moment and pay attention to something else

The Amish are often called the “Plain People.” Their home have no pictures on the walls, and no soft, comfortable furniture. The men wear dark trousers with white or blue shirts, and the women wear long dresses in dark colors. They ride in carriages pulled by horses.
The Amish have a saying: “The old way is the best way.” Although the Amish accept some new ideas- they use new medicines, for example- their way of life has not changed much in 300 years. They do not use electric lights, telephones or TVs.
Almost all Amish live on farms. They do not use modern machinery (机器),yet their farms are successful because the Amish work hard and take good care of their land and animals. Their farms are always small. The Amish think it is wrong to have more land or more money than they need to live upon. A few years ago some Amish farmers discovered oil on their land. They immediately sold their land moved away, without telling anyone about the oil.
The Amish will not buy insurance (保险) of any kind. When there is trouble, they help one another. If an Amish farmer gets sick, friends and neighbors will milk his cows and plant his fields. If a house burns down, as many as 200 men will come and build a new house in one day.
People are curious about the lives of the Amish. Every year thousands of people visit the part of Pennsylvania where most Amish live. Usually the Amish are not happy about the visitors, but they tolerate(容忍) them. Perhaps the Amish understand that the visitors want to experience, at least for a few days, the quieter, simpler Amish way of life.

A. live on plains B. live a simple life

Copernicus was born in Torun, Poland, on February19, 1473. Little is known about his early life except that his father died when he was 10. An uncle adopted (收养) him, his two sisters, and his brother. The uncle saw to it that the two boys received a good education. Copernicus went to the University of Cracow. There he studied such subjects as Latin, mathematics, and astronomy. It was probably at that time that he changed his Polish name, Niklas Kopernigk, to the Latin form of Nicolaus Copernicus. In 1946 Copernicus went to Italy, where he spent the next 10 years studying at various universities.
In Copernicus’ time people still believed that all things—the sun, the stars, and the planets—moved around the earth. It was an old belief that few men had ever questioned. Aristotle had based his theory of astronomy on his belief. Because the Church had long been the center of learning, the theory was also linked to religious (宗教的) beliefs.
In 1506 Copernicus returned to his homeland. A few years later he began to work for the Church. All those years Copernicus carried on his work on astronomy. He had just the most basic equipment and, like other scientists of his day, made observations with only his eyes. Still, using mathematics and logic (逻辑),Copernicus worked out a different theory, which held that the planets went around the sun.
Copernicus did not announce his ideas. He did not want to make trouble. But he could not hide the scientific truth. So he talked about his theory with his friends, who strongly advised him to have his work published. His great book. On the Revolution of the Heavenly Bodies appeared at the very end of his life. Copernicus saw the first copy on the day he died, May 24, 1543.
( )62. Which of the following is TRUE about Copernicus?
A. He had two brothers and a sister
B. He used to be called Niklas Kopernigk
C. He lost his father soon after he was born
D. He spent 10 years at the University of Cracow
( )63. From the passage we can see that astronomy is _____________.
A. the life experience of great men
B. the movement of the stars and the planets
C. the scientific study of natural objects in space
D. the theories developed by scientists of old times
( )64. Copernicus developed his theory ________.
A. using various telescopes B. based on Aristotle’s beliefs
C. through observations and reasoning
D. under the encouragement of his friends
( )65. The writer of the passage wants us to know that ______________.
A. Copernicus did not tell about his theory until the day of his death
B. for many years Copernicus dared to do nothing openly against the Church
C. pushed by his friends Copernicus decided to write a book in May1543
D. shortly before he got back to Poland Copernicus started to work for the Church

There was a river with a small town on either side of it. The towns were linked by a bridge.
One day,a hole appeared in the bridge. Both towns agreed that the hole should be mended. However, disagreement came up as to who should mend it. Each town thought that it had a better reason for the other to mend the hole. The town on the right bank said that it was at the end of the road,so the left-bank town should mend the hole. The town on the left bank,on the other hand, insisted that all the traffic came to the right-bank town,so it was in their interest to mend the bridge.
The quarrel went on and on,and so did the hole. The more it went on,the more the hostility between the two towns grew.
One day a man fell into the hole and broke his leg. People from both towns questioned him closely about whether he was walking from the right bank to the left or from the left bank to the right,in order to decide which town should be blamed for the accident. But he could not remember, since he got drunk that night..
Some time later,a car was crossing the bridge and broke an axle(轴)because of the hole. Neither town paid any attention to the accident,as the traveler was not going from one to the other, but was merely passing through. The angry traveler got out of the car and asked why the hole was not mended.
On hearing the reason,he declared,“I'll buy this hole. Who‘s the owner?”
Both towns at once declared that they owned the hole.
“One or the other, whoever owns the hole must prove it.”
“How shall we prove it?”asked both sides.
“That's simple. Only the owner of the hole has the right to mend it. I‘ll buy the hole from whoever mends the bridge.”
People from both towns rushed to do the job while the traveler smoked a cigar and his driver changed the axle. They mended the bridge in no time and asked for the money for the hole.
“What hole?”The traveler looked surprised. “I can't see any hole. I‘ve been looking for a hole for several years now. I'm prepared to pay a good price for it,but there’s no hole here. Are you pulling my leg or what?”
He got into his car and drove off.

Scientists have searched for many years for a method to tell whether a volcano(火山)explosion will be small or large. Now,four scientists say they have discovered something in lava(熔岩)that will help do this. They did the research on Mount Unzen on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu.
Mount Unzen exploded in November,1990. Since then, more explosions have killed 43 people and destroyed the homes of more than 2,000 others. The volcano is still active today.
The scientists say the lava of the volcano contains high level of an element(成份),which is a sign of the presence of the lava from deep in the earth, not from the surface. They say it shows that the lava coming directly from inside the earth is connected with huge explosions instead of smaller ones.
The scientists examined the lava from 18 explosions of Mount Unzen that took place during many thousands of years. They also studied the lava from other volcanoes in the area that are older than Mount Unzen. The lava studied came from both large and small explosions. The scientists found that large explosions contained more of the element than small ones. The scientists say if they had known this two years earlier, they could have warned the people living in the area near Mount Unzen and saved many lives.

Have you ever argued with your loved ones over simple misunderstandings(误解)?Little wonder. We often believe we're more skillful in getting our point across than we actually are, according to Boza Keysar,a professor at the University of Chicago. In his recent study, speakers tried to express their meanings using unclear sentences. Speakers who thought listeners understood were wrong nearly half the time. Here’s some good advice to reduce misunderstanding:
(1)Don't trust what you see from the listener. Listeners often nod, look at you or say “uhhuh” to be polite or move the conversation along. But it‘s easy to consider these as signs of understanding.
(2)Train the editor(编辑)in your head. If you say,“Beth discusses her problems with her husband,”it's not clear whether she’s talking to her husband or about him. Try instead,“Beth talks to her husband about her problems.” Or “Beth talks to others about the problems with her husband.”(3)Ask listeners to repeat your message. Introduce your request by saying “I want to be sure I said that right.” Questions like “How does that sound?”or “Does that make sense?”may also work.
(4)Listen well. When on the receiving end,ask questions to be sure you're on the same page. After all,it isn‘t just the speaker's job to make his speech understood.
( )58. Why does the writer give us the advice?
A. We're not skillful enough to make clear sentences.
B. Misunderstanding is damaging our normal lives.
C. Misunderstanding occurs now and then.
D. It's impolite to say NO to others.
( )59. The writer suggests that when talking to others, the speaker should ______.
A. know that listeners will show him that they understand his words
B. express himself clearly even when he sees signs of understanding
C. notice listener's signs of understanding
D. look directly into his listener's eyes
( )60. By Train the editor in your head, the speakers are advised _______.
A. to get themselves trained by a good editor
B. to discuss problems with their husbands or wives
C. to express themselves in long but simple sentences
D. to make sure each sentence has only one meaning
( )61. In the last paragraph, the words you're on the same page mean that ______.
A. you're following the speakers closely
B. you're reading the same page as the speaker does
C. you should know which page the speaker refers to
D. your story is written on the same page as the speaker's

How Coney Island got its name remains a mystery, though people have found explanations from almost every stage of its history.
A written record came out in 1924. It says that the island was once the home of the Konoh people. The name Konoh was mispronounced and finally became “Coney.”
Another explanation finds the name connected with the arrival of Henry Hudson in New York Harbor in 1609. According to it, John Coleman, Hudson’s right-hand man, was killed by Indians. To honor him, people named the island after him.
The Dutch settled in Manhattan in1624, and they became to Coney Island soon afterwards. Since the Dutch word for rabbit (兔子) was konijn and the island had a large population of wild rabbits, many people have supposed this fact to have led to the name. There was a different story about the Dutch word. The Dutch fought the Indians there and were believed to have said that their enemies “ran like rabbits.”
According to an article in a magazine, an Irish captain named Peter O’ Connor sailed between New York and Ireland in the late 1700s, and he named Coney Island after an island that was close to his home in Ireland and of the same size as the American island.
Unfortunately, there is little evidence (证据) that the Dutch, or the English after them, used any word “Coney” for several centuries. There is a lot of evidence, however, that the name Coney Island came into use in the first half the 19th century, after a ferry (渡船) service to carry passengers from the island to the mainland.

Ben Carson, a doctor at Johns Hopkins Children’s center, talks about how he grew up in a poor Detroit Neighborhood, when peer (同龄人) pressure almost controlled his behavior and even his clothes. He wanted so badly to be considered cool that he begged his mother to buy him an expensive Italian shirt.
“My mother made me a deal,” Carson remembers, “She said, ‘I’ll give you all the money I make next week. You’ll be in charge of the family finance (财务)—buying food and other necessities and paying the bills. Whatever you have left over you can spend on whatever you want.’”
“I thought, this is going to be great,” Carson says, “I bought things we needed most and then began going through the bills. Of course I ran completely out of money long before everything was paid.”
Then I realized my mother, with her third-grade education, was a financial genius (理财能手)—just to keep food on our table and clothes on our backs with such a small sum of money. I’d been a fool. I wanted her to buy me a $75 shirt when she only took home $100 a week, cleaning other people’s floors and washing their toilets. I took a hard look at my behavior and wondered how I could be so selfish.”
“I started studying again. My grades went back up to A’s. Some of my peers laughed at me because I did not follow their pattern. But I refused to let that trouble me, because I had a goal.”
The experience had a lasting effect, “I not only saw and felt the difference my mother made in my life, I am living out that difference as a man.”

Most people can remember a time in their lives when they learned something almost by accident, that is, without consciously (有意识地) trying to learn it. Often this kind of learning happens when we are in fact trying to learn something else. For example, many people learn a number of English words not by memorizing them or studying them directly, but by doing something they enjoy, like listening to popular songs that contain them. Similarly, some people learn words in Chinese or Japanese nit by studying those languages directly, but by studying martial arts, such as kungfu or aikido, in which Chinese or Japanese terms are used. Foreign students in the United States often learn the system (体系) of measurement simply having to shop and cook for themselves. Those activities require them to learn words like pound, gallon, inch and yard.
Many educators believe that such a kind of learning, generally called content-based learning, is the best way to learn the rules of a system. Supporters of content-based learning argue that people can best understand and remember a system’s basic rules by coming upon them in the context (环境) of that system—not by studying and memorizing them out of context. Therefore, supporters of content-based learning feel that grammatical rules can best be mastered indirectly through reading and writing, rather than by mere memorization. Likewise, they feel that mathematical rules can best be learned by working out real-life problems where such rules are needed to find out the answers. In many cases, our own learning experiences may support the ideas that we have a deeper understanding of rules we find out from context than of those memorized out of context.
62. By saying “they learned something almost by accident”, the author means “they learned something without _____.”
A. realizing they are learning it
B. paying attention to the accident
C. understanding what they are learning
D. knowing what they should learn next
63. Shopping and cooking in a foreign country _____.
A. are necessary for students studying systems
B. help one learn measure used in that country
C. tell one what is needed to learn to live there
D. require people to know how to measure
64. Many educators believe that the best way to master the basic rules of a system is ______.
A. learning them in the context
B. producing problems from context
C. memorizing the related words first
D. fixing attention on the rules themselves
65. What does the author most probably think of the content-based learning?
A. He doubts it.
B. He supports it.
C. He considers it funny.
D. He finds it impractical.

阅读下列短文,然后根据短文的内容从每小题的四个选项中选出最佳的一项。

Grammar is the way a language works. People sometimes describe grammar as the “rules” of a language; but in fact no natural languages have rules. If we use the word “rules”, we suggest that somebody made the rules first and then spoke the language, like a new game. But languages did not start like that. Languages were started by people making sounds which gradually changed into words, phrases and sentences. No commonly-spoken language is fixed. All languages change over time. What we call grammar is simply a description of a language at a particular time.
Do we need to study grammar to learn a language? The short answer is “No”. Very many people in the world speak their own native language without having studied its grammar. Children start to speak before they even know the word “grammar”. But if you are serious about learning a foreign language, the long answer is “Yes, grammar can help you to learn a language more quickly.” It’s important to think of grammar as something that can help you, like a friend. When you understand the grammar of a language, you can understand many things yourself, without having to ask a teacher or look in a book.
So think of grammar as something good, something helpful, something you can use to find your way like a signpost or a map.
41. The author holds that if grammar is described as “rules”, it would suggest that _____.
A. rules must be made to speak the language
B. language goes before grammar
C. rules are fixed by language
D. language is not a new game
42. From Paragraph 1 we can see that _____.
A. language is changing, so is its grammar
B. grammar must be simple to describe a language
C. languages were formed by people now and then
D. grammar should be changed at a particular time
43. According to the author grammar helps when ______.
A. we look up something in a book B. we ask someone to make rules
C. we speak our native language D. we learn a foreign language
44. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
A. Grammar Is the Rules of a Language
B. The Change of Language
C. Grammar Is Your Friend
D. How to Study Grammar

In the late 1990s scientists began to notice changes in Yellowstone National Park. Trees that had stopped growing for years began to grow again. Animals started behaving differently. Scientists believe it is the wolves that have caused these changes.
Wolves used to live in Yellowstone. But many people thought wolves would kill animals kept on farms, such as
cows and sheep, and they would harm crops, too. In 1926 the last wolf in Yellowstone was killed.
For the next 70 years Yellowstone did not have any wolves. Scientists decided to bring them back to the area in 1995. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service brought in 15 gray wolves from Canada. Today between 250 and 300 wolves live in Yellowstone—and they have already left their mark.
Wolves have been hunting and eating elk. The elk leftovers (驯鹿被吃剩的部分) provide food for animals such as bears. With fewer elk, plants can grow better and taller. This new plant growth provides more trees for birds and more plant food for beavers. The number of beavers in northern Yellowstone has increase greatly since wolves were reintroduced.
Wolves have such a big effect on Yellowstone because they are a keystone species (物种). Keystone species are species on which a large number of other plants and animals depend. The removal of a keystone species can lead to the death of other species.
However, not everyone is happy with the wolves’ return. Farmers want to limit the number of wolves in the area, because if there are too many wolves, they may have not only their cows and sheep killed by wolves, but also their cats, dogs, and horses.
Still, many scientists believe that Yellowstone is starting to look more like it did before people began to kill wolves there.
45. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Wolves have played an important role in Yellowstone for 70 years
B. Wolves in Yellowstone had all been killed by the mid-1920s
C. Yellowstone had no wolves at the beginning of the 20th century
D. Yellowstone can hold no more than 300 wolves today
46. The sentence “… they have already left their mark” most probably means in the passage that _____.
A. they have brought about changes to Yellowstone
B. they have made marks where they can get food
C. they have left a lot of footprints in the park
D. they have marked out the areas of their own
47. What is the immediate change after 15 wolves were brought in?
A. Plants grow taller and better
B. Beavers have increased greatly
C. The number of elk is reduced
D. Cows and sheep are killed on farms
48. It seems to be a wise decision to have brought wolves back to Yellowstone because ____.
A. wolves can depend on themselves to find food
B. a national park should introduce foreign animals
C. a national park should have different kinds of animals
D. wolves are necessary for many other animals and plants to live

In most of the United States, students attend classes for 5 days each week. Schools are required to hold classes for about 180 days a year. Recently, schools in some areas of the country have begun experimenting with the new teaching arrangement of holding classes for 4 days a week. Classes would meet their Monday through Thursday, or Tuesday through Friday. Some schools in 12 American states are now using that schedule (日程安排).
The students still have the same number of total hours in class as before. But they attend school for a longer time on each of the 4 days. In Colorado, schools on the four-day week hold classes for seven-and-one-half hours a day for 144 days. Traditional (传统的) schools meet for 6 hours a day for 180 days.
Many schools on a four-day schedule offer special programs, trips or sports meets on the fifth day. Officials say this gives students even more time in class than on the traditional schedule. Students do not have to miss school to go to the events. They can also go to doctors or deal with other important affairs on the fifth day.
The main reason for shortening the school week is that many schools can save money by not providing meals or transportation for students on the fifth day. And they say research shows that students are not harmed by the shorter week.
49. How many teaching hours do most of the schools have in the U.S.?
A. 6 hours for 4 days a week B. 6 hours for 5 days a week
C. 7.5 hours for 4 days a week D. 7.5 hours for 5 days a week
50. What change does the four-day school week bring about?
A. Students attend classes for 180 days a year
B. Students have fewer class hours than before
C. Students take part in more after-class activities
D. Students have to take special programs on the fifth day
51. Which of the following is true about the four-day schedule?
A. It is being practiced in some states
B. It is being planned all over the country
C. It helps students save money for meals
D. It prevents small schools from closing down

After then years of being a housewife and a mother, Carol could not stand it any longer. Then, one morning, just after her two daughters had gone to school, she saw an advertisement(广告)in the paper. She phoned, and was asked to come to an interview(面谈) that very afternoon.
Mr. Hollins, who interviewed her, was a young man about 24 in a black suit. There was a hard look in his eye and he talked very fast. He told her she would be required to stop men between the ages of 21 and 50 and ask them several questions designed to determine what men think of deodorants. The information was to be recorded and she would be paid according to the number of complete interviews she had.
When Carol asked which factory the research was for, she was told that was not important. Last of all, before she began she would have to attend a one-day training. Carol accepted. After the training, which was only about how to write down the answers correctly in a form and how to put the questions, Carol found herself in the center of town at 9:30 in the morning. She soon found out that getting the information was really not at all that easy.
First, she stopped a man who refused to answer any questions because he had no time. Next, a man told her it was none of her business whether he used deodorants or not. Then she interviewed a man who was hard of hearing and, instead of answering her questions, began asking her all sorts of his own. Finally, Carol found a young man with a pleasant smile on his face. Up to now, you have probably spent most of your time o English grammar and new words. You already know quite a lot about what the rules of English grammar are, and how to form sentences in English. This knowledge is necessary for you to continue your study, but it is not enough for you to speak English well. In order to develop conversational listening and speaking skills, you need practice in these skills, and this is what this textbook aims to give you.
Each unit in this book does not aim at grammar. Instead, the main goal of each unit is to provide conversational tasks or functions (功能) such as introducing yourself, talking about likes and dislikes, and inviting someone to go somewhere. In order to take part in English conversation, it is necessary to learn how these and other basic functions are used in English.
At the end of each unit, you and your classmates will work together to solve (解决) a problem based on the functions you have just learned.
This book gives you chances to listen to native speakers. It also gives you guided practice in developing conversational skills.
36. What does this book aim to provide for the user?

B. Ways to remember new English words
C. Exercises for skills to form sentences in English

I always feel sorry for world learners busy dealing with fights between nations. When my three children were young, most days it was hard keeping my house from becoming a battlefield.
It got worse as they grew older. Three years ago, Zack, then 16, couldn’t make it through a day without making his sisters, Alex 11 and Taryn 9, angry.
My husband and I tried to be understanding the boy at such an age. We reasoned, punished, and left heartfelt notes on his bed about how he was hurting our family. His answer was “I say it because it’s true.”
I even tried telling the girls to fight back. Bad idea. Now I had three children at war. When there was no way out, I told everything to my sister in an e-mail. She replied, “Don’t e-mail me. E-mail him.”
Our son was online (上网) every day, mailing and talking with his friends. Maybe he would actually hear me this way. I didn’t say anything different, but e-mail just took the tension(紧张气氛) away. There’s be no shouting or door banging. Zack wouldn’t feel under attack.
Zack didn’t reply for days. When he finally did, his entire message was four small words. I smiled when I read them: “You’re right. I’m sorry.”
The children still fought, of course, but Zack changed. Best of all, I now have a better way to talk with not one but three of them. I like that they don’t tune me out as much. They like not having to listen to me shouting to them. Or as Alex says, “You’re so much nicer online.”
All I know is that the house is quiet, but we’re talking.

Hundreds of thousands of young children are being given mobiles(移动电话) by their parents against official health advice. One in nine five-to-nine-year olds has a mobile. This will rise to one in five in a year or two, making this the fastest growing group of mobile users.
A report on mobile safety says that while it is not sure whether they hurt users, children should not be allowed to use mobiles as much as grown-ups. This is because their brains are still developing and their bones are thinner, making it easier for mobile phone radio waves to pass through them. Mobile phone companies say they do not aim at under-16s, although some of their mobiles are designed to interest younger children.
Many of the mobiles are paid for as a safety measure so that the child can always call a parent when necessary. However, when children see that their friends have a mobile, it can become popular among them.
Professor Colin at Oxford University, who studies mobile phone radio waves, told BBC News “It’s new technology(技术) and the science is still developing. We have to be very careful about children—if there are any effects they would hurt young children more than grown-ups.” He suggested that children should be encouraged to use text messages rather than spoken conversations, this would reduce the amount of radio waves greatly.
43. Which age group of mobile users is increasing fastest?
A. From 1 to 5 B. From 5 to 9
C. From 9 to 16 D. Above 16
44. What do mobile phone companies say about their business?
A. They make mobiles for those over 16.
B. They don’t serve those who are under 16.
C. Their designers know the brains of children users.
D.Younger children are more interested in their mobiles.
45. According to Professor Colin, which of the following is TRUE?
A. Reducing radio waves is a hard task for scientists.
B. Children should not be allowed to use mobiles.
C. Scientists usually care for young children more than grown-ups.
D. Sending each other text message is safer than regular calling.
46. What do you think is the purpose of this passage?
A. To make known that children mobile users are increasing very fast.
B. To warn people about the danger of children using mobiles.
C. To discuss the effects of mobile phone radio waves.
D. To teach people a safe way of using mobiles.

When memories of holiday pumpkin pies (南瓜馅饼) are not fresh any more, large-pumpkin growers are already planning next year’s crop. Every year farmers around the world work very hard to see who can grow the world’s largest pumpkin.
The present world record belongs to Steve Daletas of Oregon. His pumpkin weighted 1,385 pounds (682 kilograms). That’s heavier than large bears! In August the pumpkin grew 29 pounds (13 kilograms) per day! Our reporter spoke with Andrew Sabin, who was one of the organizers of the 2003 Large-Pumpkin Weighing Competition (比赛).
To grow a large pumpkin, Sabin explained, you need the right seed and the right soil, and a lot of hard work. “It’s like a baby, ” he said, “You look at your baby every day.”
All the hard work leads up to the weighing competitions, which usually take place in October. Top prize winners can
earn thousands of dollars.
Just getting the large pumpkins away from the farm can be very difficult. The pumpkins are so heavy that farmers often have to use forklifts (叉车) to move them.
What do farmers do with the large pumpkins after the competition? According to Sabin, restaurants often buy the pumpkins for show. Top winners can also sell their pumpkin seeds to other farmers hoping to beat the world record the next year.
Would the large pumpkins be made into pumpkin pies? Not likely, Sabin said. “They don’t taste so good as the small pumpkins that are grown to eat.”
Animals seem to like them though—at least one large pumpkin was fed to an elephant at the Oregon Zoo!
47. Which of the following is TRUE of the passage?
A. People continue to pay attention to holiday pumpkin pies.
B. Farmers in the world are eager to grow pumpkins for food.
C. Farmers try their best to grow pumpkins as large as possible.
D. Pumpkin growers find it difficult to plan the next year’s farming.
48. What can we know about Steve Dalctas from the passage?
A. His pumpkin is the heaviest in the world.
B. His farm has grown 1,385 pounds of pumpkins.
C. He tries to find bears heavier than his pumpkin.
D. He is an organizer of the 2003 pumpkin competition.
49. What does It refer to in “It’s like a baby”?
A. Seed B. Pumpkin C. Soil
50. What might happen to the largest pumpkins after the competition?
A. Winners move them back to their farms.

Brain and I were a few years into relationship and I still hadn’t cooked for him. He was a skillful cook and the thought of preparing a meal for him made me feel worried. Finally, one day I decided that I would make dinner for him Saturday night. I bought an Italian cookbook.
Saturday afternoon I made the filling first. There was no problem. Next, I started with an egg in the well of some flour, and the mixture changed into a mound of dough (面团). I began to feel good about myself.
I glanced around the kitchen, looking for a rolling pin. My eyes lit on a bottle of wine I had bought to go with dinner. Not as good as a pin, but it would do. I rolled as best as I could, and then cut the dough with a kitchen.
Just as I was finishing, the doorbell rang. I put the tortellini I made into the fridge and greeted Brain. He had brought along a bottle of wine and a rose to celebrate the evening.
The pot of water began to boil. Brain watched as I pulled the tortellini out of the fridge, and his eyes opened widely. “You made tortellini?” he asked, “By hand? I don’t even make that, and I have machines to do the job.”
I dropped the tortellini into the boiling water, and soon they were ready. Everything looked perfect. We sat down, and I watched as Brain put one in his mouth and chewed (嚼). And chewed. And chewed.
Then I tried one. It was very thick. I knew it was all over. Brain would just taste the food, and then leave early with a headache and disappear into the night.
But he ate them, admitting that they were a little thick, but really not bad.

Thanks to Google, millions of Internet users are now swimming effortlessly in the information ocean. Internet users know that Google is a strong search engine that is designed to bring tons of information within their reach. Yet, people make the most of Google, says computer scientists Nancy Blachman.
Blachman was introduced to Google in April 1999; her interest grew after working there for a few months. Before long, she was a Google fan. As Blanchman studied the search engine, she became more and more skillful. Then, Jerry peek suggested she write a Google guidebook. The idea interested her, and she began developing the website (网页),GoogleGuide.com. Since then, millions of people have used her website.
Blachman guides her online (在线) students through step-by-step lessons. Some lessons are for new Google users, but experienced users can also find lessons they need. One tip: if you aren’t sure whether a word has a hyphen (连字符), it is best to search with the hyphen—this way Google will look for the word with the hyphen, without the hyphen and written as two words. And another: users can ask Google not to do something by putting a hyphen before the word. For example, someone searching for “Dallas cowboy”, who does not want the football team, should enter “Dallas cowboy-football.”
Blachman says the website is her way of continuing teaching and helping people, which she says. From 1990 to 1997, she taught courses at Stanford about mathematical software (软件). She also has written several books. “A lot of people see Google as easy to use, and it is easy to use, but I am trying to make it even easier.”

48. What does Blachamn think about Google users in general?
A. They don’t know how to make full use of Google
B. They don’t know how to swim in an information ocean.

D. They have to become a fan to be skillful Google users.
49. If users are not sure whether the word they search for has a hyphen, they should enter _____.

Joseph Lemasolai wrote a book about his life. His people, the Maasai, are nomads, meaning they do not stay in one place for long. They move their villages in search of good grass and fresh water for their cattle. “The cow is the centerpiece of pretty much everything we do,” Joseph explains. ”That’s why we move. We could not be nomads without cattle. You can’t move for nothing----you can’t just walk around.
When he was very young, Joseph spent much of his time looking after his family’s cattle, taking them to food and water and watching out for lions. He played on the grassland with his friends.
When Joseph was about six years old, he left his family to attend a boarding school(寄宿学校). There, Joseph faced difficulties much like other children do. He was laughed at because he was fat. He got into trouble daily with his teachers.
But Joseph also faced difficulty most children do no. “Every time school closed for vocation, I had to find my way home,” Joseph says, “That was one of the hardest things: The village might be 5 miles away, or it might be 50. Sometimes I wouldn’t know exactly where my family was, I had to search for them.”
Joseph later attended high school in a city. After graduation, he went to college. Finally, he became a social studies teacher, and now he is teaching seventh and eighth graders at a school.
Every summer, Joseph travels back to the grassland to visit his mother, brothers, and friends. And he takes a group
of students with him to see both the beauty and the difficulty of growing up in that part of the country. “I like to show them the other side of the coin,” Joseph says.

Clay is important because it is used to make containers of all kinds. Workers add water to soften clay. This makes it easier to form into shapes by machine. Then it is heated to a very high temperature. The result is a container that will last for many years.
In many countries, clay was formed from volcanoes(火山). This kind of clay usually contains many minerals(矿物质). So the fires to make containers from volcanic clay must be hotter that those used for non-volcanic clay. The fires may be as hot as 1400℃. The high temperature should not be reached too fast so that the containers can be dried slowly.
You can add some materials to clay to gain desired results. For example, you can add sand to prevent tiny breaks or lines from forming on the surface of the final product. But you should not use sand from the coasts of oceans. Instead, you should use sand from rivers or other areas.
Clay often exists in fields covered with some water. The clay will be found about one meter below the ground. River banks often also have clay about one meter or less under the surface. Clay is very shiny when it is wet. You can also take some of the material and add enough water to it. Then press it in your hands until it is about the size of an egg. It is probably clay if it holds together when you stop pressing.
43. What do workers do with clay to make it into different shapes?
A. Soften it by putting water into it.
B Heat it to a very high temperature.
C Harden its surface by pressing it.
D Add some materials into it.
44. What’s the difference between volcanic clay and non-volcanic clay?
A. Volcanic clay can be found in very few countries.
B Non-volcanic clay can be dried more quickly.
C Non-volcanic clay makes better containers.
D Volcanic clay usually has more minerals.
45. In making containers sand is added to clay____.
A. to produce containers free from tiny breaks
B. to make desired lines on the surface
C. to make it easier to shape
D. to get special patterns
46. Clay can often be found____.
A .along the coast of the ocean
B .anywhere under the ground

Nearly five million people see Grand Canyon each year.
Most of them see it from their cars at overlooks along the South Rim. The South Rim is the easiest to reach in the park.
The South Rim is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Services are provided and facilities(设施) are open year round.
A much smaller number of people see the Canyon from the North Rim, which lies just miles directly across the Canyon from the South Rim. The North Rim rises a thousand feet higher than the South Rim, and is more difficult to reach. Heavy snows close the road to the North Rim from late October to mid-May of each year. At the beginning, Rose realized the only thing that could stop her was fear of failure. "I could hear my friends and family saying, 'Why did you leave a good job?' Last fall was a first-of-its-kind season. I did not arrange (安排) any after-school classes for my children. No swimming. No music lessons. No play dates. Nothing.
Once they finished their homework, they were free to do what they pleased, but only one hour of TV. In the beginning, my sons, Ben, 11, and Nick, 9, were anxious about this sudden, unplanned freedom. I had to, push them out of the door with a ball, a bike, and so on. "Play!” I ordered.
I learned that this new plan takes time, patience and a lot of faith in the theory that having excellent grades isn't really important.
When my older kids, now in college and high school, were young, I brought in the rules of modern parenting. They are unspoken, but followed carefully. First, you must let your child have a variety of activities. After all, you never know where you'll find a genius (天才). Second, if the child shows the slightest talent (才能), the activity must be pushed with lessons, special coaching (辅导) and practice of several days a week. Every minute should be taken and every minute has a purpose. That was really too much for my children.
Now with the new plan, we told stories, we listened to music. And the kids played with bikes, balls, and whatever was handy. Nobody kept score. In fact, the boy played outside so much that the lawn was worn down to the soil in places. They've made friends with those who come from all over the neighborhood to play games.
We like those peaceful evenings. Ben and Nick have a good time this fall, may be that's because the time off has allowed us to enjoy each other's company.

A woman heads into a popular New York City coffee shop on a cold winter rooming. Just ahead of her, a man drops a few papers. The woman pauses to help gather them. A clerk at busy store thanks a customer who has just bought something. "Enjoy" the young woman says, smiling widely. "Have a nice day." She sounds like she really means it. These are the common situations we may see every: day.
However, in her best-selling book Talk to the Hand, Lynne Truss argues that common good manners such as saying "Excuse me" almost no longer exist. There are certainly plenty who would agree with her. According to one recent study, 70 percent of the U.S. adults (成年人) said people are ruder now than they were 20 years ago.
Is it really true? We decided to find out if good manners are really hard to see. In this politeness study, reporters were sent to many cities in the world. They performed three experiments: "door tests" (would anyone hold the door open for them?); "paper drops" (who would help them gather a pile of "accidentally" dropped papers?); and "service tests" (which salesclerks would thank them for a purchase [购物])
In New York, 60 tests (20 of each type) were done. Along the way, the reporters met all types of people: men and women of different races, ages, professions (职业), and income levels. And guess what? In the end, four out of every five people they met passed their: politeness test making New York the most polite city in the study.
44. What does Lynne Truss argue in Talk to the Hand?
A. People are not as polite as they used to.
B. "Excuse me" is not welcome nowadays.
C. Of all the adults in the US 70% are rude,
D. People don't care about manners any more.
45. What is TRUE about the politeness study discussed in the passage?
A. The study was reported in many cities of the world.
B. New York was the most suitable city for the experiment.

A. More people passed the tests in New York than in any other cities.
B. Different kinds of people acted differently in the New York tests.
C. Four out of five people passed the politeness test in the study.
D. Many people in the experiment passed the tests by guessing.

This is not a diet (减肥食谱) or a hard ~exercise program. Nobody can stick to those for long. Instead, it's a simple way to make weight loss a natural part of the life you already live. And guess what? It's fun! You don't have to give up the foods you love or do regular exercises. It's about balancing calories(平衡卡路里) in tiny ways that add up to big benefits (好处). You just use some tricks the "naturally thin" people do. Pick the ones you like, stick with them, and you'll lose weight and be strong!
Talk it up Every time you pick up the phone, stand up and walk around. Heavy people sit on average two and a half hours more every day than thin people, according to a study.
Get face time. We use e-mail so much that we've forgotten what our colleagues look like.
Pick a colleague or two who sit farthest from you: and deliver 10 of those daily messages in person. And go out of your way: go to a bathroom or a copy machine on another floor and take the stairs, of course.
Think about your drink Consider beer or wine instead of a frozen drink: A glass of regular beer has 140 calories and a serving of wine has 126 calories, while a strawberry daiquiri has about 300 and a margarita 340.
Reduce a total of 100 calories each day and you'll be able to lose about 10 pounds in a year. This is really not difficult to do.
47. What is mainly talked about in the passage?
A. How to do exercises daily.
B. How to lose weight easily.
C. How to work comfortably.
D: How to eat and drink regularly.

50. Which of the following probably has the most calories?

Probably no other musical instrument (乐器) is as popular around the world as the guitar (吉他). Almost every kind of music needs a guitar. Country and western music would not be the same without a guitar. The Spanish music called flamenco could not exist without a guitar. The sound of American blues music would not be the same without the sad cry of the guitar. And rock and roll music would almost be impossible without this instrument.
People don not agree about where the guitar was first played, but most agree it is very old. Some say an instrument very much like a guitar was played in Egypt more than one thousand years ago. Some other say that an old form of the modern guitar was brought to Spain from Persian sometime in the 12th century. The guitar continued to develop in Spain. In the 1700s it became similar to the instrument we know today.
Many famous musicians played the instrument. The famous musician Niccolo Paganinni played and wrote music
for the guitar in the early 1800s. Franz Schubert used the guitar to write some of his famous works. In modern times Andres Segovia helped make the instrument extremely popular.
One kind of music for the guitar developed in the southern area of Spain called Adalusia. It will always be strongly connected with the Spanish guitar.

Eight years ago, officials in Chicago, Illinois, decided to replace the black roof on the city government building with a planted garden. The aim was to reduce energy costs, improve air quality and control the rainwater entering the city’s waste system (系统). Green roofs also help reduce a problem called urban heat islands (城市热岛现象). During hot weather, the building’s roof could reach temperature of up 76℃. With the garden, the temperature of the roof area was reduced by at least 30℃. Workers planted over 150 kinds of plants that could stand bad weather. Now, the area is cooler, the building requires less energy to keep cool, and the roof looks nice. Chicago also offers money to help people pay for building their own green roofs.

She started to see which things to put back, and nervously looked behind her, knowing she was holding up the line. I was smiling and trying to look sympathetic (同情)—I had been in situations where I did not have enough money plenty of times myself. Finally, the young mother gave something back to the clerk, and asked for a new total.
At that moment, the woman in front of me asked the clerk to wait a moment. She took out $5 and handed it to the clerk to pay what the young mother was short of. When the clerk tried to give the woman the fifty cents change, she pointed to the little girl and told the clerk to give it to her. The little girl smiled and ran to one of the machines to spend the money. Naturally, the young mother was thankful and said so. The woman smiled and told her she was welcome.
I will never forget the look on that little girl’s face—not when she was given the money, but when she realized that a perfect stranger cared enough to help them. From the way she looked at the woman, you could tell that she learned something valuable that day: Some people do care.
That woman taught me several things with that one little deed. There are many situations in which we can help other people. It doesn’t take much money. A few dollars to someone like me was something quite different to that mother.
44. Why was the young mother carefully counting her money?
A. To know how much would be left after payment.
B. She got ready to pay for what she had taken.

D. To see if she could buy more things.

There’s a time to get angry, and it’s best for your child if you do. Let’s say your child hits a playmate with a toy—hard enough to make the other child cry. How can you teach your child to feel sorry so he or she won’t do it again? Researchers say the best way for parents to react (反应) is to show their anger and to let the child know exactly why they are mad.
Many parents believe that it is best to control their feelings and to wait until they’re calm before scolding their children. But the mother or father who explains reasonably to a child, “Peter was crying because you hit him,” is not likely to attract much attention. Young children need to be scolded immediately, and strongly, before they’ll take criticism (批评) to heart.
When your young child does something wrong, scold him or her seriously at once. At the same time be sure to tell the child clearly what he or she has done wrong. An angry reaction without an immediate explanation does little good. Forbidding a child to play outside or not allowing him to watch TV as a punishment works well—but only when taken together with an explanation. Make certain your child understands that although his or her wrongdoing has made you angry, you still love him or her. Use simple, direct words such as, “You hurt Peter. How would you feel if he hit you? You must never, never hurt people.” If your voice expresses strong feeling clearly, your message will carry enough weight.
48. According to researchers, how should parents react when their child did something wrong?
A. Ask the child not to do it again any time.
B. Let the child know what exactly happened.
C. Teach the child why and how to say sorry to others.
D. Show the child how angry they are and tell him why.
49. What do many parents think they should do with the wrongdoer?
A. Speak strongly and angrily to him.
B. Hide their feelings when talking to him.
C. Explain immediately why he was wrong.
D. Calm themselves down before scolding him.
50. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Best Ways to Stop Children’s Wrongdoings.
B. Differences among Parents in Dealing with Children
C. Different Ways to Deal with Children’s Wrongdoings
D. Research on Preventing Children from Hurting Others.

"The price of books foe our students is just getting higher and higher and, along with the rising cost of tuition(学费),it's killing these students,"said Peter Jason,a college professor."Remember, students are one of the poorest groups of people in America.Almost half of them have at least one pat-time job.In fact,One of my students has three jobs. And she still manages to have high scores and go to school full-time."
Textbook prices are usually high.Adding to that problem, many college teachers change textbooks year after year;they either upgrade to a new edition(版本)or change to a different textbook..This further hurts students because if a teacher no longer uses a textbook, that book has no resale value.
Dr.Jason decided to make life a little easier and a lot cheaper for his students by writing his own book on public speaking."Many books have an increased price because of CD-ROMs,lots of color photographs and pictures.I talked to my students, and many of them, like me,prefer to keep things simple. So,a few years ago,I wrote my own textbook.I made sure that it was simple.Compared to most of other public speaking books, mine is half the number of pages, and one-third the price. That is $30 instead of $90.When I wrote a second edition last year, students only had to buy the 35 new pages. For only$7.00,they had almost a new book.

We don't have beds in the space shuttle(航天飞机),but we do have sleeping bags.During the day, when we are working,we leave the bags tied to the wall, out of the way.At bedtime we untie them and take them wherever we've chosen to sleep.
On most space shuttle flights everyone sleeps at the same time.No one has to stay awake to watch over the space plane;the shuttle's computers and the engineers at the Control Office do that.If anything goes wrong, the computers ring a warning bell and the engineers call us on the radio.
On the space shuttle,sleep-time doesn't mean nighttime. During each ninety-minute flight around the earth, the sun"rises"and shines through our windows for about fifty minutes;then it"sets"as our flight takes us around the dark side of the Earth. To keep the sun out of our eyes,we wear black sleep masks(眼罩).
It is surprisingly easy to get comfortable and fall asleep in space, and we sleep differently. Some sleep upside down, some sideways, some right side up.When it's time to sleep,I take my bag,my sleep mask, and my tape player with earphones and float up to the flight platform. Then I get into the bag,and float in a siting position just above a seat, right next to a window. Before I pull the mask down over my eyes,I relax(放松)for a while, listening to music and watching the Earth go by under me.
When I'm in space I don't need as much sleep as I do on Earth.Maybe that's because when I am weightless,I don't feel as tired.Or maybe it's because I'm excited to be in space and don't want to waste time sleeping.
36、 What do the shuttle people do with their sleeping bags while working?
A、Keep them where they work
B、Leave them where they sleep.
C、Place them on the beds.
D、Fix them to the wall.

A、Every 140 minutes.
B、Every 90 minutes.
C、Every 50 minutes.
D、Every 40 minutes.
39、 What do we know about people sleeping in the space shuttle?
A、They sleep while listening to music.
B、They have difficulty falling asleep.
C、They sleep in different positions.
D、They go to sleep when it is dark.

You have probably seen ads(广告) in newspapers or on TV for mail-order shopping. Perhaps you have been sent a catalogue(商品目录) and have bought something by mail. Why do people buy things they have not seen with their own eyes? One of the the reasons might be that some people
believe that things can be bought more cheaply by mail. Another advantage of mail-order shopping is that it is more comfortable to sit at home and look through a catalogue than to rush around the stores. With the catalogue from a large company, you have your own shop window for almost everything you might want to buy.
The mail-order business is very wide-spread.Some companies hire people to show products listed in the catalogue to possible customers.Perhaps you have had one of these people call you or come by your home.
Buying from a catalogue is so easy.It saves the shopper time and trouble.Sometimes,it saves the shopper money. But people often buy more than they can really afford, since they can buy now and pay later on.Some companies allow a customer to pay for a product over a long period of time.People can also pay a certain percent of the total price. This is called a down payment. Then the customer pays a certain amount of money every month until the product is completely paid for.People can buy almost everything by mail-order shopping-furniture,tools and even heavy machines.

A、they think the price is lower

My wife and I moved into our home nine years ago.We have a yard a “rock garden”.There
the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish.Very often when we have more flowers,Denise or I would plant them between the rocks, just to and some color to the area.
Last summer I found, in the rock garden, a tiny little plant that I could not immediately recognize. I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise said she didn’t either. We decided to ler ir continue growing until we could find out what it was.
Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the strange plant, it appcared to be a sunflower. It looked thin and tall with only one head on it. I decided to baby it along and weed(除草)around it.As Ipulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds,I noticed something unusual. The sunflower had not started where I saw it begin.it actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.
If a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its way of developing,we too have the ability to do the same ting. If we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach where we aim to go and get what we need for groewth.
We need to believe in ouseleves knowing we have the ability to achieve our goals.Like the sunflower, it knew it had the ability to get over the rocks because it had faith in itself that it would succeed. Stand tall like the sunflower and be proud of who and what we are, then other tings will begin to support us. We will find a way to go under or around any “rocks”in order to realize our goals.

B. To remove the rocke
C. To plensc their neighbors
D. To make the area colorful

It was vary thin and tall
It had only noe head on it
It grew on top of a big rock
It began to grow under a rock
39. Whet does the author want to say through the story?
Rocks cannot prevent us from success

But the kind of wood may not be so important. It mey be more important to eut the wood in a speeial way. Wood for a ivlin must be eut into the right size and shape. The smallest differemce will change the sound of the violin. Musicians sometimes think that this is the secret of the Italians
Size and shape may not be the answer either. Scientists make new violins thet are exactly the same size and shape. But the new ones still do not sound as good as the old ones. Some scientists think the seeret may be the varnish(清漆). It makes the wood look shiny, but is also helps the soune of the instrument. Since no noe knows what the Italian violin makers used in vamish,on ont can make the same vamish today.

In January 2004, a 20-year-old woman ran a red light while talking on a cell phon. Her car knocked into another car crossing with the green light directly in front of her. The police found the driver never touched her brakes(刹车)and was traveling 48 mph when she hit the other car. The police were told that the dreiver was not looking down, pressing buttons. She was looking straight out of the windshield(挡风玻璃)talking on her cell phone as she passed four cars and a school bus.
Vision is the most important sense for safe driving. Yet, drivers using cell phones are likely to “look at” but not “see” objects. It is said that drivers using cell phones look but fail to see up t o 50 percent of the information while driving. Drivers are looking out of the windshield, but they do not really deal with the situation on the road.
Although the public appear to be turning against cell phone use while driving, many admit they regularly talk or text while driving. The police say that nine percent of the drivers at any given time are using cell phones, and about one in four car accidents are directly related to cell phone use.
Using cell phones while driving has become a serious public health threat(威胁). A few states have passed laws making it unlawful to use a handheld cell phone while driving, but these laws give the false message that using a hand-free phone is safe.

Many people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. But doctors now say babies begin learning on their first day of life. A baby will smile if his or her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care by smiling to please her mother or other care givers. This is when babies learn to
connect and “talk” with other people.
Language skills are believed to develop best in the first three years when t he place is rich with sounds and sights. Scientists say children should hear the speech and language of other people again and again. The first signs of communication(交际)happen during the first few days of life, when a baby learns that crying will bring food and attention.
Research shows that most children recognize the general sounds of their native language by six months of age. By that time, a baby usually begins to make sounds. By the end of their first year, most children are able to say a few simple words, although they may not understand the meaning of the words. By 18 months of age, most children can say between eight and ten words. By two years of age, most children are able to make simple sentences. By ages three, four and five, the number of words a child can understand quickly increases. It is at these ages that children begin to understand the rules of language.

Since I know very little about American Universities, it would be great if you can suggest some universities suitable for me.
I’m looking forward to your reply. Thank you very much.
