Memo
To: All Stall
From: Jalie Mok, Secretary; Sports Development Committee
Date: May 20, 2010
A week ago, “Sports for Life” programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo(备忘录)for your reference when you answer the phones.
Sports 1:Basketball
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
Sports 2: Gym
We will be using St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00pm. Second, it has lots of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, shipping , jogging , outdoor aerobics(有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.
Sprots3: Hiking
Hiking (远足)will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Sports 4;Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i.e. 2:45pm to 3:45 pm).Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have
two life guards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.
68. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Students selecting basketball had better register early.
B. Students participating in gym should arrive at 6:00 pm.
C. Hiking usually begins at 2:30 pm and lasts 2 hours.
D. Students having swimming suits can take up swimming.
69. It can be inferred from the passage that _________. .
A. students taking part in basketball will walk to the courts.
B. every student can gain admission to one of the four sports
C. hiking students can have a regular rest in the shade of trees
D. students taking up the four sports should bring bottles of water
70. It can be concluded that _________. .
A. each sport will take only on hour B. students will be charged for the four sports
C. all the sports will take place at Kowloon Peak D. teachers will accompany students on each sport
71. The purpose of the memo is to _________. .
A. attract students’ interest in the programme B. require the parents to select a sport for their child
C. help the staff explain the programme to the parents D. remind teachers and lifeguards to be present on time

"Friendship is one of the basic bonds between human beings. While the characteristics of friendship might vary from one country to another, people from all cultures not only enjoy friends but need them.
Many studies have shown that teenagers who have no friends often suffer from psychological disorders. It has been shown that teenagers, perhaps more than any other age group, need
companionship and a sense of belonging. The negative consequences of loneliness have also been observed among the elderly. The death of a spouse often leaves a widow or a widower totally bereft. If, however, they are surrounded by friends and relatives and if they are able to express their feelings, they are more likely to recover from their grief。
“No man is an island.” In other words, we are all parts of society. We all need the love, admiration, respect and moral support of other people. If we are fortunate, our friends will provide us with all of these necessary aspects of life.
As most people observe, there are many levels of friendship. The degree or intensity of friendship varies depending on the personality of the individuals involved and the context of the relationships. Outgoing persons enjoy being surrounded by many people whereas shy persons are perhaps content with fewer but more intense friendships。
Everyone is not equally open with all their friends. The degree of closeness is determined by many factors. Close friends can be formed at any stage in one’s life but they are usually very rare. Not very many people have more than a few really close friends. Irrespective of the level of closeness, all friendships are based on reciprocity(互惠), honesty and a certain amount of love and affection。
72 “No man is an island”(Line 1, Para. 3) implies that ______________。
A. everyone is a part of an island B. man cannot be an island
C. everyone is just a part of society D. society is an island
73. The degree of closeness of friendship mainly depends on_____________。
A. age B. belonging C. personality D. culture
74. The author thinks that close friends_____________________。
A. can be easily formed when one is young B. cannot be long-lasting
C. are not rare for everyone D. are rare for most people
75 .The word “irrespective”(Last sentence, Para. 5) means______________________。
A not respecting B. dishonoring C. regardless. D. considering

Daredevil climber Alain Robert, known as the French Spiderman, stood strong winds and rain to climb the world's tallest skyscraper, Taipei 101, Saturday.
Robert, dressed in red rain jacket, tights and climbing shoes, climbed up ropes hung down the
side of the 101 storey, 1,667-foot office tower, reaching the top in around four hours."It was a very big moment and I felt a lot of satisfaction though I was so tired and nearly all of my muscles were painful.I felt completely eased." said Robert after taking the ride down in one of the tower's lifts, the world's fastest.
Several hundred on-lookers and shoppers gathered at the base of the tower watching and cheering Robert's progress through live pictures on a large television screen. At times he disappeared from view as clouds passed by the top of the tower surrounding the upper stories.
The 42-year-old Frenchman has covered scores of well-known structures around the world including the Empire State Building and the Eiffel Tower——without permission or any safety equipment or ropes.
This time Robert was wearing a harness (背带) fastened to safety ropes for the entire climb. He used the ropes to pull himself up most of the way, using his hands and feet to climb up the walls for only short sections. He said that the management had requested he wear the ropes and safety equipment, which had also become necessary due to the rain making the windows and frames very slippery.Robert said he would not carry his pity the next time.

Disposing (处理) of waste has been a problem since humans started producing it. As more and more people choose to live close together in cities, the waste disposal problem becomes increasingly difficult.
During the eighteenth century, it was usual for several neighboring towns to get together to select a faraway spot as a dump site. Residents or trash haulers (垃圾拖运者) would transport household rubbish, rotted wood, and old possessions to the site. Periodically some of the trash was burned and the rest was buried. The unpleasant sights and smells caused no problem because nobody lived close by. Factories, mills, and other industrial sites also had waste to be disposed of. Those located on rivers often just dumped the unwanted remains into the water. Others built huge burners with chimneys to deal with the problem.
Several facts make these choices unacceptable to modern society. The first problem is space. Dumps, which are now called landfills, are most needed in heavily populated areas. Such areas rarely have empty land suitable for this purpose. Property is either too expensive or too close to residential neighborhoods. Long distance trash hauling has been a common practice, but once farm areas are refusing to accept rubbish from elsewhere, cheap land within trucking distance of major city areas is nonexistent. Awareness (意识) of pollution dangers has resulted in more strict rules of waste disposal. Pollution of rivers, ground water, land and air is a price people cannot longer pay to get rid of waste. The amount of waste, however, continues to grow.
Recycling efforts have become common place, and many towns require their people to take part. Even the most efficient recycling programs, however, can hope to deal with only about 50 percent of a city's reusable waste.
64. The most suitable title for this passage would be .
A. Places for Disposing Waste B. Waste Pollution Dangers

A. Farm areas will continue accepting waste from the city in modern society.
B. There is cheap land to bury waste in modern society.
C. It is difficult to find space to bury waste in modern society.
D. Ways to deal with waste in modern society stay the same.
67. The main purpose of writing this article is to .
A. draw people's attention to waste management
B. warn people of the pollution dangers we are facing
C. call on people to take part in recycling programs
D. tell people a better way to get rid of the waste

Babies are born yogis. Once we were all able to pull our toes up by our ears and laugh about it. Then we aged, got injured, and began carrying stress in our shoulders and back. In short, we lost our balance.
Yoga(瑜伽) is an ancient practice that helps create a sense of union in body, mind, and spirit. It brings us balance. I was seriously out of balance when I started practicing yoga in 1999. I had plantar fascitis in both feet, and my doctor had warned me against all the things I loved to do: walking, hiking, and playing tennis. I was desperate for exercise. Yoga became my salvation and even enhanced my other fitness activities. I practice yoga at least twice a week, but I consider yoga to be part of my daily life because after a while you no longer just practice yoga—you love it.
Yoga becomes part of your physical life. Your body grows stronger, more toned, and more flexible as you move from one pose to the other. I spent a week in Mexico at a yoga retreat, and it was the first vacation on which I lost weight. “Rather than building muscle, yoga builds muscle tone,” says Shakta Kaur Khalsa, author of the K.I.S.S. Guide to Yoga. “Because yoga helps maintain a balanced metabolism (新陈代谢), it also helps to regulate weight. Additionally, yoga stretches muscles lengthwise, causing fat to be removed around the cells.” I do yoga poses throughout the day. After hours at my computer, I stretch my stiff shoulders and arms. When I need a boost of energy, I do energizing poses. When I am feeling exhausted at the end of the day, I do restorative poses.
Yoga becomes part of your mental life. Yoga teaches you to focus on breathing while you hold the poses. This attention to breath is calming; it dissolves stress and anxiety. I use yogic
breathing on the tennis courts, in the dentist’s chair, and in traffic jams. You should always leave a yoga practice feeling energized, not tired. If you feel tired after yoga, it means you spent the time “fighting” yourself, trying to force yourself into poses. In yoga, you “surrender” to the pose by letting go of the tension.
Yoga becomes part of your spiritual life. Yoga is practiced by people from all religions; it is not restricted to any religious group. Yoga teaches “right” living in how we deal with ourselves and others. As I work on a difficult pose, I learn patience, forgiveness, and the value of gentleness. Yoga advocates proper eating, but you don’t have to be a vegetarian to practice yoga.
45. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. What’s Yoga? B. How I Do Yoga Poses
C. The Benefits of Yoga D. The Varieties of Yoga
46. According to the third paragraph, yoga can help people __________.
A. grow taller B. lose weight
C. become flexible in thinking D. make more friends
47. People feel tired after yoga because __________.
A. they consume energy in practicing yoga
B. they respond well to yoga poses
C. they spend too much time on yoga
D. they force themselves into yoga poses
48. If this passage continues, what will the writer most probably write about in the next paragraph?
A. Yoga as a means to keep fit. B. Different yoga poses.
C. Popularity of yoga all over the world. D. Encouraging people to do yoga.
Anchors on China Central Television (CCTV) will need to do some fast talking to replace the popular English acronyms(首字母缩略词) they’re now banned from using. Shanghai Daily reports that “anchors at China Central Television have been banned from saying the English acronyms NBA, CBA, GDP, and the like in their programs.”
The replacement for those handy acronyms? Chinese presenters must use the full Chinese name, standardized by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.
Although CCTV (oops, we mean China Central Television) presenters must already have a score of at least 94 in their government-rated oral Mandarin proficiency exam, saying the full name of organizations like the CBA or WTO ― 10 and 6 character’s long separately ― is sure to challenge even the most skillful anchors. CCTV sports anchor Sun Zhengping tells Shanghai Daily, “A full Chinese explanation of the English initials must be followed if my tongue slips. It is a little trouble but a necessary one because not every audience member can understand the initials.”
Although the government isn’t giving any official explanation for the shift, it is believed to have to do with a proposal by Huang Youyi, director of the China International Publishing Group, at March’s NPC meeting. In his speech, Huang said, “With more and more publications mixing Chinese with English, measures and regulations should be adopted to avoid English invading Chinese. If we don’t pay attention and don’t take measures to stop the expansion of mixing Chinese with English, Chinese won’t be a pure language in a couple of years.”
Although China is far from the first country to take measures to protect local languages (the French and Québécois beat them to it by a long way), acronyms are more about saving time than they are about corrupting a language, we would think. Good luck to the CCTV anchors.
56. CCTV anchors have to “do some fast talking” because they can no longer ______.
A. speak as slowly as they like B. mix English into Chinese
C. use shortened Chinese expressions D. have so much time for their program
57. According the writer, “CBA” is supposed to be replaced with “______” by CCTV anchors.
D. The Chinese Basketball Association
58. When Sun Zhengping said “if my tongue slips”, he meant “if I _____”.
A. habitually use an English acronym B. speak a little bit too fast
C. make a mistake in pronunciation D. say something impolite or improper
59. What’s Huang Youyi’s proposal?
A. Using full English names instead of short forms.
B. Translating Chinese terms into proper English.
C. Avoiding Chinese words mixing into English.
D. Keeping our mother tongue as a pure language.
60. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. China has fallen behind in the matter. B. The ban is not necessary.
C. Chinese shouldn’t be corrupted. D. CCTV anchors will have a hard time./

1 (2010·全国卷II·C)
Thousands of people living in the Chinese capital will celebrate the start of the Chinese New year by heading for the ski resorts (滑雪场). Never mind that Beijing's dry weather seldom produces snow. It is cold enough in winter for snow-making machines to make a covering for the hills north to the capital. And the rapid growth of a pleasure-seeking middle class has formed the basis for this new craze(热潮).
Since Beijing's first ski resort was opened ten years ago, the sport has enjoyed astonishing increase. There are now more than a dozen resorts. Clothes markets in the city have added bright colored ski suits to their winter collections. Mr. Wei, a manager of a newly-opened ski resort in Beijing, sees the growth of an industry that could soon lead Chinese to head for the ski resorts of Europe. In recent years ski resorts offering natural snow have opened in China. But many are in faraway areas of the country and can't really match the equipment and services of some ski resorts in Europe.
Beijing's skiing craze is partly a result of the recent increase in private (私有的) cars. This has led to the growth of a leisure industry in the capital's suburbs (郊区), which until the late-1990s were unreachable to ordinary people. According to Mr. Wei, about 40% of the visitors to his resort come in their own cars. The rest are bused in by schools, businesses or government offices.
The problem is making money. Starting ski resorts requires quite a lot of money: hiring land from the local government, preparing the hills, buying snow machines, making sure there are enough water and electricity to run them, and buying ski equipment for hiring out to customers.
The ski resort where Mr. Wei works cost nearly $4m to set up. And, as so often in China when someone comes up with a good idea, many others rush in and price wars break out. Beijing now offers some of the cheapest ski training classes in the world, though with most people rather new to the sport, expecting a few more doing the same job.
50. What does this text mainly talk about?
A. Convenience for skiers brought about by private cars.
B. Skiing as a new way of enjoying one's spare time.
C. Things to be considered when starting a ski resort.
D. A sudden increase of ski training classes in Beijing.
51. Why are some Chinese likely to go skiing in Europe?
A. To visit more ski areas. B. To ski on natural snow.
C. For a large collection of ski suits. D. For better services and equipment.
52. The underlined words "leisure industry" in Paragraph 3 refer to______.
A. transport to ski resorts
B. production of family cars
C. business of providing spare time enjoyments
D part-time work for people living in the suburbs
53. What is the main problem in running a ski resort?
A. Difficulty in hiring land. B. Lack of business experience.
C. Price wars with other ski resorts, D. Shortage of water and electricity,
Mr. Wei, a manager of a newly-opened ski resort in Beijing, sees the growth of an industry that could soon lead Chinese to head for the ski resorts of Europe以及此段的最后一句But many are in faraway areas of the country and can't really match(敌得过)the equipment and services of some ski resorts in Europe.可知。
仔细理解“And the rapid growth of a pleasure-seeking middle class has formed the basis for this new craze(热潮)”. 以及“Beijing's skiing craze is partly a result of the recent increase in private (私有的) cars. This (指上一句的内容) has led to the growth of a leisure industry in the capital's suburbs (郊区), which until the late-1990s were unreachable to ordinary people.”
The ski resort where Mr. Wei works cost nearly $4m to set up. And, as so often in
China when someone comes up with a good idea, many others rush in and price wars break out. Beijing now offers some of the cheapest ski training classes in the world可知,由于很多人都蜂拥去建滑雪场,打起价格战,致使资金投入很多,但收益不是很大。
Why play games? Because they are fun, and a 1ot more besides. Following the rules…planning your next move...acting as a team member…these are all “game” ideas that you will come across throughout your life.
Think about some off the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating (合作) .
Many children’s games have a practical side Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones. Which sharpens the hand-eye coordination(协调)needed in hunting.
Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.
Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it—some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.
Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.
41. Through playing hide-and-seek, children are expected to learn to ________.
A. be a team leader B. obey the basic rules
C. act as a grown-up D. predict possible danger
42. The underlined part in Paragraph 2 most probably means that games can________.
A. describe life in an exciting way B. turn real-life experiences into a play
C. make learning life skills more interesting D. change people’s views of sporting event s
43. According to the passage, why is winning Olympic medals so encouraging?
A. It inspires people’s deep love for the country. B. It proves the exceptional skills of the winners.
C. It helps the country out of natural disasters. D. It earns the winners fame and fortune.
44. Iribarne’s goal of forming the foundation is to _______.
A. bring fun to poor kids B. provide soccer balls for children
C. give poor kids a chance for a better life D. appeal to soccer players to help poor kids
45.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Ga med benefit people all their lives. B.Sports can get all athletes together.
C.People are advised to play games for fun. D.Sports increase a country’s competitiveness.
从第二段中…that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating (合作) (教孩子一些他们后半生期望遵从的基本规则,比如按顺序和合作)可知答案选B:通过玩捉迷藏,期望孩子们学会遵从基本规则。
43.【解析】选A。 Many sports encourage national or local pride(许多体育运动激励民族自豪感),并且举了奥运会的例子,所以奥运会激发了人们对祖国的深爱。
He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future. 注意B项是干扰项,not only…but also..
45.【解析】选A。
