America's innovation capital mainly consists of many small towns ‎ and cities on the San Francisco Peninsula (半岛) squeezed between the coastal mountain range to the west and the bay to the east. It is traditionally made up of the top of Santa Clara County as well as the very bottom of San Mateo County.‎ Not long ago, this place was known as the Valley of Heart's Delight, famous for its plentiful fruit yards. The circumstances that turned the countryside into a technological center have been studied carefully, and many have attempted to replicate the magic in Silicon Valley. But for the past two decades photographer Beth Yarnelle Edwards has been documenting the one aspect often unnoticed by these observers: Silicon Valley's fundamentally suburban (郊区的) character.‎ Edwards' Suburban Dreams project was born in 1997. “I felt lonely and trapped, but I realized that the people around me really loved being there,” she recalled. She began by photographing friends and acquaintances near her home in San Carlos. The project grew as she interviewed her subjects to understand how their environment shaped their hopes and dreams. “It's really important to me that the pictures are true to what is happening in the home,” she says. In 2016, Edwards began revisiting her subjects to see the effects of the growth and the wealth. But she was surprised by how little had changed in the lives of those still there.‎ Many Silicon Valley natives do not recognize much of what they see there nowadays. It's true that modest bungalows (平房) have been replaced by very large houses. Almost everything is more crowded and more expensive. But a lot will never change. The main roads — Highway 101, El Camino Real — are the same. So are the freestanding oak trees and gentle hills surrounded by golden grass. And at the heart of them all, as Edwards' photos illustrate, the suburban dream is still alive. The circumstances that turned the countryside into a technological center have been studied carefully, and many have attempted to replicate the magic in Silicon Valley.‎ 分析:该句为主从复合句。句中“that turned the countryside into a technological center”为that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词“The circumstances”,that在从句中作主语。 ‎ ‎4.Where is Silicon Valley?‎ A.In the center of San Francisco.‎ B.On the San Francisco Peninsula.‎ C.On top of Santa Clara County.‎ D.At the bottom of San Mateo County.‎ 答案与解析:B 考查细节理解。 根据第一段第二句“America's innovation capital mainly consists of many small towns and cities on the San Francisco Peninsula (半岛) squeezed between the coastal mountain range to the west and the bay to the east”可知,硅谷位于美国旧金山半岛处,夹在位于西方的沿海山脉和位于东方的海湾之间,故B项正确。‎ ‎5.Which of the following best explains the underlined word “replicate” in Paragraph 2?‎ A.Copy. B.Replace.‎ C.Study. 根据第二段第二句“The circumstances that turned the countryside into a technological center have been studied carefully, and many have attempted to replicate the magic in Silicon Valley”可知,将农村变成科技中心的环境已经被仔细研究过,许多人试图复制硅谷的魔力。由该句中的“have been studied carefully”并结合语境可知,画线词意为“复制”,故A项正确。‎ ‎6.What did the project focus on later?‎ A.People's hopes and dreams.‎ B.The wish of the acquaintances.‎ C.The true life of the local people.‎ D.Silicon Valley's influences on the locals.‎ 答案与解析:D 考查细节理解。根据第三段最后两句“In 2016,Edwards began revisiting her subjects to see the effects of the growth and the wealth. But she was surprised by how little had changed in the lives of those still there”‎ 可知,在2016年,爱德华兹开始再次回访她的研究对象,看看经济增长和财富带来的影响。 ‎ ‎7.What can be a suitable title for the text?‎ A.Crazy Changes, Crazy Followers B.Wild Dream, Successful Project C.Lively City, Major Innovation D.Unchanging Life, Unchanging Dream 答案与解析:D 考查标题判断。根据尾段第四句“But a lot will never change”和最后一句“And at the heart of them all,as Edwards' photos illustrate, the suburban dream is still alive”,并结合全文内容可知,本文主要讲述了“虽然硅谷在经济上取得了巨大的成功,但是人们的生活并没有由此发生太大的变化,人们的郊区之梦也没有改变”这一主题,故D项最适合作本文的标题。‎ C ‎[2019·南昌三模]‎ Our mother earth is going through a very tough situation and we, the entire human race, are destroying our environment consciously or unconsciously without even realizing its consequences. The policy was one of several new principles aimed at guiding the company's development and sale of AI technology and tools.‎ The principles were announced after more than 3,000 Google employees signed a document calling for the company to cancel an AI agreement, known as Project Maven, with the U.S. Department of Defense.‎ Kirk O. Hanson is the director of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University in California. The center examines how ethics can be used as guidelines for technology development. He decided that the protest by Google employees against the U.S. military agreement was based on fears that AI ‎ technology could lead to the creation of weapons which might cause disasters to humans. ‎ ‎“If you have artificial intelligence which identifies targets and automatically launches (发射) weapons, you have an autonomous weapon. Just as with driverless vehicles, autonomous weapon systems may not be as safe as their supporters promise. We should be more concerned about how an autonomous weapon might make a mistake. Is that artificial intelligence targeting system as good as we think it is? And until we have trust that those systems will not make mistakes, we're going to keep skeptical about the use of artificial intelligence. ”‎ A top Department of Defense official was asked about the use of autonomous weapons during an event last year at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. Air Force General Paul J. Selva, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said such systems should never be used to replace human commanders.‎ Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company does not plan to stop providing AI technology for all military uses. Fortunatel, when I arrived there i a cold winter morning, I couldn't see much. However, the unusual peace and snowblanketed winter views still impressed yo a lot.‎ ‎①more改为most。 What impresses (impressed) sb.most is/was... ‎ ‎②am改为was。 ‎ ‎③删除who。分析句子结构可知,该句的主语是Argentinian dancers,谓语是made,且该句含有so... that... ‎ ‎⑥deeper前加a。该句中taste是名词,“a taste of...” 句子“when I arrived there... I couldn't see much”意思为“在一个寒冷的早晨,当我到达那里的时候,我没有看到许多”,由此可知,作者感到的是“不幸”而不是“幸运”,所以Fortunately改为Unfortunately。‎ ‎⑨in改为on。短语in the morning意思是“在早晨(上午)”表示泛指,但是当morning前有修饰词时,其前用介词on,所以in改为on。‎ ‎⑩you改为me。 ‎ Dear Peter,‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ Looking forward to your early reply.‎ Yours,‎ Li Hua ‎【范文赏读】 ‎ Dear_Peter,‎ ‎①Glad to hear that you are going to take a trip to China this August.
