Brainly

In one of my favorite photographs of my mother, she's about 18 and very tan, with long and blond hair. It's the 1970s and my dad is there, too, hugging her from behind.
I haven't seen this photo for years. I have no idea where it is now, but I still think of it — and, specifically, my mom is in it. She looks so young and innocent. At that time she hasn't yet dropped out of college, or got married. The young woman in this photo has no idea that life will bring her five children and five grandchildren, one divorce, two marriages, and a move across the country.
For me, as for many daughters, the time before my mother became a mother is a string of stories, told and retold: the time she sold her childhood Barbie doll to buy a ticket to Woodstock; the time she worked as a waitress at Howard Johnson's, struggling to pay her way through her first year at Rutgers. The old photos of her are even more appealing than the stories because they're a historical record, carrying the weight of fact, even if the truth there is slippery: the trick of an image, and so much left outside the frame.
It is always a comfort from those photos to know that time, aging and motherhood cannot take away a woman's essential identity. For daughters who closely resemble their moms, it must be an even bigger comfort; these mothers and daughters are twins, separated by a generation, and an old
photo serves as a kind of mirror.
For daughters, these old photos of our mothers feel like both a chasm and a bridge. The woman in the picture is someone other than the woman we know. She is also exactly the person in the photo-still, right now. Finally, we see that the woman we've come to think of as Mom—whether she's nurturing, or disapproving, or thoughtful, or supportive, or sentimental一is also a mysterious, fun, brave babe.
She's been here all this time.
24. Why does the author still think of the photo of her mother?
A. The photo reminds her of her mother.
B. Her mother looks young and happy in the photo.
C. She wonders why her mother dropped out of college.
D. The photo tells a lot about her mother in her youth.
25. What does the underlined word "chasm" in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Bond. B. Memory.
C. Difference. D. Relation.
26. Why do some photos of mothers bring comfort to their daughters?
A, The photos are kept well even after generations.
B. The photos record the life of the mothers faithfully.
C. The photos help daughters to learn more about their mothers.
D. The photos show the essential part of the mothers remain unchanged.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Pictures of Our Mothers.
B. Our Mothers as We Never Saw Them.
C. My Favorite Picture of My Mother.
D. The Way to Learn About Our Mothers.

One way to prevent anxiety from getting out of control is to recognize its benefits. It is a mistake to think that we can make better decisions if we keep our feelings under control. Instead, a mix of feelings like anxiety and logical thinking leads to sound decision-making. There is plenty of research showing that higher levels of anxiety can make us more likely to avoid risks in our decision-making. There is also evidence that anxiety can increase the attention you pay to relevant information.
Recent studies have shown that people who are anxious about their relationships (for example, they fear to be abandoned) tend to be better at recognizing people who tell lies and are more likely to raise the alarm when danger approaches.
In the real world though, it's worth realizing that feeling anxious for a while is very common. It helps you communicate with others that you care about, and what's more, it's probably a sign that you are intelligent. At least two published studies have identified that people who score higher on measures of anxiety also tend to perform better on intelligence tests. This seems reasonable: If you're a thinker, you are sure to be always thinking about the future and imagining possible plots, including bad ones.
The important thing, if you are a person likely to worry, is not to let your fear destroy your dreams. And don't bury your head in the sand. Instead, act on your fears—do research as well as preparation. So rather than walk blindly into what you fear, why not meet challenges in full readiness?
When anxiety beats you, or casts a shadow over your life, this is a serious problem. No one is denying that. But like everyday anxiety of this kind that you feel before a presentation or interview, you needn't see it as your enemy. Anxiety is an important feeling, developed through evolution. As for people who are fairly anxious by nature, there is a reason to cheer, too. Your nerves are a sign of your watchfulness. Listen to them and act on them. Then you can turn your nervousness into your advantage.
28. What can we infer about anxiety from Paragraph 1?
A, It enables us to be more focused.
B. It stops us from thinking logically.
C. It makes us more willing to take risks.
D. It is the only reason for all bad decisions.
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Anxious people are less sensitive to danger.
B. Anxious people have difficulty discovering liars.
C. Feeling anxious is more likely to put people at risk.
D. Feeling anxious occasionally is a sign of intelligence.
30, How should we deal with anxiety in the author's opinion?
A. By regarding it as our enemy.
B. By taking action to control it.
C. By avoiding being defeated by it.
D. By treating it as a minor feeling.
31. What is the theme of the passage?
A. Effective ways to prevent anxiety.
B. Unexpected benefits of anxiety.
C. Tips on how to keep a good mood.
D. Common misunderstandings about anxiety.

Recently, a facial recognition app "Deepfake" went popular, as it allowed users to replace the faces of actors or actresses with their own in video clips of popular TV series or movies. Yet merely days later, the app's developer, was summoned and questioned by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology about the problem of the user agreement and risks of data revealing. This has raised people's concerns about the use and regulation of the facial recognition technology.
Facial recognition refers to the process of identifying a person by capturing, comparing and matching the verifiable (可核实的)biometric(生物特征识别的)information unique to his or her face with the information in the existing biometric database. From sorting photographs on mobile phones to security certification, from identifying and tracking criminals to playing with face-swapping apps, the facial recognition technology has been extensively applied in our lives. Its use has made people's lives more convenient and helped maintain social order.
However, the results can be good or bad depending on the users and regulations on the use of the technology. Illegal use of the facial recognition technology without the permission of the subjects is a serious violation of people's basic rights, freedom and security; it could even threaten social order. So it is urgent to make specific laws to regulate the use of the facial recognition technology.
In fact, the European Commission (EC) has already introduced regulations to tighten the technology's use and safeguard human rights. In April, 2019, the European Union(EU) issued the draft "Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy Al” for the development and use of artificial intelligence. However, it still remains a soft law. Now, the EC is exploring ways to regulate the application of the technology through ]egislation(立法).
In some ways, the legislation on the facial recognition technology could become a touchstone of countries' bid to regulate and ensure the healthy development of new technologies. And, during this process, the interests of not only government organizations and individuals but also industry employees and
companies should be reflected and balanced to help promote common prosperity, 32. What does the underlined word “summoned” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Beaten.
B. Employed.
C. Called.
D. Threatened.
33. How does the facial recognition technology work?
A. It takes information from an existing biometric database and sends it to people.
B. It identifies people by processing their special facial biometric information.
C. It takes photos of people's faces and stores the information in a database.
D. It divides people’s photos into different types in their mobile phones.
34. What do we know about the legislation on the facial recognition technology?
A. It is important for the future of the facial recognition technology.
B. The use of the facial recognition technology will be banned.
C. Effective laws have already been made in Europe.
D. It may hurt the interests of many companies.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Rapid Development of the Facial Recognition App.
B. The Facial Recognition Technology — a Double-edged Sword.
C. The Facial Recognition Technology Brings Convenience.
D. Problems Caused by Facial Recognition Technology.

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia (百科’全书),is the largest encyclopedia ever. An encyclopedia is a collection of informative articles about various things. Encyclopedias used to be printed as books. 36
"Wiki" is an Internet term that means “a website that can be edited by the public." It comes from “wikiwiki”, a Hawaiian word for “quick”. Two Americans, Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, created Wikipedia in 2001. 37 It has about 6 million articles in 300 languages and is visited
by billions of people each day, who want to find information on just about anything—science, math, languages, art, culture and company histories. There are articles on sports stars, too, and even long-forgotten soap operas from the 1970s.
38 Except for a small number of pages, anyone can edit articles and registered users can create their own articles. Editing is unpaid, although Wikipedia does employ a small staff. Wikipedia is freely available to anyone with an Internet connection. Its founders hoped that the model would make use of humanity's collective knowledge.
39 Many Wikipedia pages contain errors, although the organization has a content review system
that works to fix this problem. Several studies have concluded that Wikipedia is as accurate as most print encyclopedias. Indeed, a 2005 report in the journal Nature found it to be only slightly less reliable than Encyclopedia Britannica.
Today Wikipedia faces many challenges. It does not rely on advertising.40 Perhaps more importantly, the number of its volunteer editors is shrinking.
Despite these difficulties, Jimmy Wales says he will still stick to his dream. He has big plans for the future. He wants Wikipedia available in all of the world's languages.
A. Instead, all of its funds come from donations.
B. Wikipedia employs an open editing model.
C. It allows users to get information within seconds.
D. It is now the fifth-most visited website on the Internet.
E. Most of its editors are volunteers,
F. Now, they are mostly found online.
G. However, some people doubt the accuracy of Wikipedia's content.
