“Tennis 一 I'm saying goodbye." With these words, Russian tennis superstar Maria
Sharapova, 32, has announced her retirement.
“How do you leave behind the only life you've ever known?" she asked herself. Several
reasons played a role in Sharapova leaving the tennis court for good.
Over the last couple of years, she's dealt with an injury in her right shoulder and inflammation
(炎症) in her forearms that may have prevented her from returning to top form. In more recent
news, the death of her longtime friend, US basketball legend Kobe Bryant, also played a factor in
her decision to retire,
“As I think you've seen throughout my career, my perseverance has been my greatest tool, my
greatest strength," Sharapova said in an interview.“But I've started feeling like it was becoming a
weakness, because the stubbornness that was keeping me going was keeping me going for wrong
reasons."
Sharapova rose to fame at age 17 when she won Wimbledon in 2004. She won a total of four
Grand Slam singles titles; the 2006 US Open, the 2008 Australian Open, and the 2012 and 2014
French Open. She also earned the Fed Cup title in Russia in 2008 and an Olympic silver medal in
singles in 2012, among many other accomplishments. For 16 straight years from 2004, Sharapova
was the world's highest-earning female athlete, according to Forbes. Off the court, she made
millions of dollars from companies such as Evian and Nike, as well as starting her own candy
company.
"Tennis showed me the world - - and it showed me what I was made of," Sharapova wrote on
Facebook on Feb 26, alongside a photo of herself as a young girl with a tennis racquet, “It's how I
tested myself and how I measured my growth. And so in whatever I might choose for my next
chapter, my next mountain, I’ll still be pushing. I'll still be climbing. I'll still be growing.”
5. What contributed to Sharapova' s retirement?
A. Her stubbornness. B. Her friend's suggestions. C. Her injuries. D. Her growing age.

In Central America, sea turtle eggs are a popular cuisine dish. The eggs are hugely and secretly
harvested onto tables, leaving the sea turtles listed as 1hreatened.Yet we simply do not have the
ability to continuously guard large beaches, Scientist Kim William was thinking hard when she
had an “aha” moment: How about placing a fake egg containing a GPS tracker,
That's how the special eggs come in. To build them, Williams and colleagues used a 3D printer.
Then, they fixed in the smallest GPS tracking devices. As mother turtles laid their eggs under
cover of night, the researchers slipped a single spy egg into each nest. Once they are ; covered in
sand with the real ones, “"it's very difficult to tell the difference," says Williams.
Of the 101 spy eggs, 95 were taken away while 6 were quickly discovered and left on the beach.
The team received tracking data with the farthest egg travelling 137 kilometers inland and
stopping at a local supermarket. The spy egg sent its final signal the next day from a personal
house, suggesting that the research team had tracked the eggs all the way, The researchers stress
that the tracker is not a way to catch local thieves, many of whom are living in poverty, but rather
a tool to better understand how the deal goes.
Still, stopping stealing is not as simple as handing the tracking data over to the police, Across;
Central America, trade in sea turtle eggs can be legally ambiguous. In Costa Rica, for example; it
is illegal to .steal and sell sea turtle eggs but buying them is not a crime, It is not black and white.
Meanwhile, local support is in need above all.“It, but not tracking with eggs, is the real meat and
potatoes of conservation," says Williams.
9. What is the major threat to the existence of sea turtles?
A. Unguarded sea beaches. B. Unsafe GPS trackers.
C. The overhunt of turtle eggs D. The popular dishes of sea turtles.
10. How does Williams explain her study, in Paragraph2?
A. By using an expert's words. B. By clarifying the process.
C. By making a comparison. D. By listing scientific data.
11. The researchers tracked so many spy eggs to_______
A. test the GPS trackers B. look into the whole deal of turtle eggs
C. catch the eggs thieves D. learn about the current situation of sea turtles
12. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Central America Need Wildlife Protection B. Sea Turtles Draw International Concern
C. GPS Trackers Improve Tracking accuracy D. Spy Eggs Help Save Endangered Sea Turtles
D
A decade ago, at the end of my first semester teaching at Wharton, a student stopped by for
office hours. He sat down and burst into tears. My mind started cycling through a list of events
that could make a college junior cry: his girlfriend had left him; he had been accused of cheating
in exams; he forgot t0 turn in papers by the deadline.“1 just got my first A-minus." he said, his
voice shaking.
Year after year, I watch in sadness as students go all for straight A's. Some sacrifice their
health; a few have even tried to charge their school after falling short. All hold the belief that top
marks are a ticket to best graduate schools and high-paying job offers.
I was one of then. I started college with the goal of graduating with a GPA of 4.0. It would be a
reflection of my brainpower and willpower, revealing that I had the right stuff to succeed.. But I
was wrong
The evidence is clear: academic excellence is not a strong predictor of career excellence. Across
industries, research shows that the connection between grades and job performance is modest in
the first year after college and unimportant within a handful of years, For example, a Google, once
employees are tW0 or three years out of college, their grades have no bearing on their
performance. (Of course, it must be said that if you got D's, you probably didn't end
up at Google.)
In a classic 1962 study, a team of psychologists tracked down America's most creative architects
and compared them with their technically skilled but less original matches. One of the factors that
distinguished the creative architects was a record of grades.“In college our creative architects
earned about a B average," Donald MacKinnon wrote.“In work and courses which caught their
interest they could turn in an A performance, but in courses that failed to strike their imagination,
they were quite willing to do no work at all."
Academic grades rarely assess qualities like creativity, leadership and teamwork skills, or
social, emotional and political intelligence. Yes, straight-A students master large amounts of
information and reproduce it in exams. But career success is rarely about finding the right solution
to a problem 一 it is more about finding the right problem to solve. This might explain why Steve
Jobs finished high school with a 2.65 GPA, J. K. Rowling graduated from the
University of Exeter with roughly a C average, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. got only one A
in his four years at Morehouse.
13. Why did the author list the events that crossed his mind in the first paragraph?
A. To make sure he didn't misunderstand the student.
B. To make the real trouble of the student more striking.
C. To show sympathy for the student.
D. To describe an unusual meeting with a student.
14. What did the author believe?
A. Academic achievements don't always mean success in career.
B. Top marks meant well-paid job offers.
C. Nobody was to blame for falling short in school.
D. Marks didn't reflect willpower and brainpower
15. What's the author 's conclusion about straight A's?
A. Straight A's don't necessarily lead to professional success.
B. Straight A's are a ticket to a number of opportunities.
C. Straight A's are of little value in future careers.
D. Straight A's can't help people find right solutions.
16. What should people focus more on to succeed?
A. How to be a creative leader. B. How to solve a challenging problem.
C. What is the right problem to solve. D. What really interests them.

Last week, Education Secretary Arne Duncan declared a war on paper textbooks. “Over the
next few years," he said in a speech at the National Press Club, “textbooks should be abandoned."
In their place would come a variety of digital-learning technologies, like e-readers and
multi-media websites.
Such technologies certainly have their place. But Secretary Duncan is threatening to light a
fire to a tried-and-true technology that has been the foundation for one of the great educational
systems on the planet. And while e-readers and multi-media may seem appealing, the idea of
replacing an effective learning platform with a widely hyped ( 炒 作) but still unproven one is
extremely dangerous,
An expert on reading, Maryanne Wolf, has recently begun studying the effects of digital
reading on learning, and s0 far the results are mixed. She worries that Internet reading, in
particular, could be such a source of distractions for the student that they may cancel out most
other potential benefits of a web-linked, e-leaning environment, and while it's true that the
high-tech industry has sponsored considerable amounts of research on the potential benefits of
Web-based learning, not enough time has passed for longitudinal (纵向的) studies to demonstrate
the full effects.
In addition, digital-reading advocates claim that lightweight e-books benefit students' backs
and save schools money. But the rolling backpack seems to have solved the weight problem, and
the astonishing costs to equip every student with an e reader, provide technical support and pay for
regular software updates promise to make the e-textbook a very pricey choice.
As both a teacher who uses paper textbooks and a student of urban history, I can't help but
wonder what parallels exist between my own field and this sudden, wholesale abandonment of the
technology of paper.
17. What does the underlined part “a tried-and-true technology" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A: Foundation. B. Paper C. E-books. D. Platform.
18. What is the drawback of textbooks according to the passage?
A. Its price. B. Its efficiency. C. Its content. D. Its weight.
19. What worries Maryanne Wolf is that__________
A. E-readers and multimedia websites are learning methods that are proved effective.
B. the results of digital reading effects are understandable
C. digital reading can't provide potential benefits for users
D. students may not focus on leaning by digital reading
20. What is the author's attitude towards digital-learning?
A. Objective. B. Supportive. C. Positive. D. Disapproving.

our lives. Instead of taking many classes and workshops to teach us how to build connections with
others, we should experience beSHOPs, which means we learn by being, by observing, and by
becoming.

build strong connections. You should express appreciation for all the things in your life and make
gratefulness just a part of who you are,
•Willingness to learn:_ 25- Many individuals will find themselves stuck in their own world and
never take a step outside of their comfort zones. When we have that desire to learn, to explore, and
our curiosity is continually peaked, then we are more likely to have these meaningful experiences.
Remember, true happiness, and meaningful experiences are not things you can learn from a
series of worksheets and lectures. It is about being
A. There is s0 much in the world around us,
B.“To be" requires key values that shape us,
C. It means service, kindness and love for others.
