Nowadays, we have a huge number of devices around US that are supposed to make our daily life easier. It’s what we’re most focused on during our normal life, but what if something serious happens, one of the things we’d rather not think about? A fire, a burglary(盗窃), a child’s disappearance? Some items can save you in these situations.
Most of us have a flashlight at home. It can be of great help when there’s a power outage, for example. The problem is that most of us don’t know where it’s hiding, and if we find it,the batteries

In case of a natural disaster, a radio can be your line of communication when, for example, telephone nets break down. It might be your only way of receiving important information and updates. Store a battery-driven radio together with bottled water,non-perishable(不易腐烂的)foods, clothes and other necessities.
A burglar alarm is an excellent device that makes your home more secure and
lets you feel safe. With one little code before you leave and after you come back, your entire home will be secured. The entire neighborhood will know if it’s damaged, not to mention the security company who will call or come over on the spot.
A smoke detector should be important of course in every home. It’s easily set up and doesn’t need any maintenance(维护), except for occasional battery changes. Smoke detectors’ sharp alarms have saved countless 1ives—you think you’d wake up in case of a fire, but chances are that you won’t.

A.Call the security company. B.Have a family member stay at home.
C.Enter a code in the burglar alarm. D.Control it with your cell phone.

A.It doesn’t need any maintenance.
B.It can put out a fire.
C.It can warn the owner of a fire by alarm.
D.It can keep the owner from smoking.

I met my friend when we were in graduate school, and we enjoyed hanging out together outside of class. After receiving our degrees, we both left school to live in different states. That was 10 years ago.
We’ve kept in touch, but our phone conversations and twice-a-year visits became opportunities for my friend to talk endlessly about her problems. When I tried to tell her my own life, she obviously ignored.
In the past few years I’ve not visited her at all and been afraid of her occasional phone calls and visits to my house. She invites herself now because I no longer invite her. When she’s at my home, she follows me from room to room, talking nonstop, until I make an excuse to get away from her. I tell her I need to take a nap, but I don’t sleep. I sit in my room and read or enjoy the quiet.
Here’s the worst part. She and her family, including two young children, are moving to my city. Her family has a small income, and they are buying a house in a grand neighborhood they can’t afford. She asked if she and her husband and her children could stay at my home on their trips to my city to deal with house matters·
My husband and I have no children. Even though our home is tiny and perfectly sized for us, I let them stay She told me her husband would start his new job before they finished purchasing this house. I thought I had to offer her our guest room. If I hadn’t offered, she would have asked anyway
1 would never under any circumstances impose(强迫)on a friendship this way. I feel used, angry, and don’t care if I ever see her again. Should I end this friendship?
I’m getting absolutely nothing from it but a knot in my stomach.

A European Union program is letting blind people experience famous paintings for the first time.It uses 3Dprinting to re-create famous paintings so they can be touched.
One painting printed with the new technology is Gustav Klimt’s‘‘The Kiss”. It is a popular attraction at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, Austria. The painting shows a man and a woman standing in a field filled with flowers. They are wearing gold robes and have their arms around each other. The man leans down to kiss the woman.
Klimt finished the painting in 1908.Until now, people who had trouble seeing could not appreciate the artwork. But thanks to the reproduction they can touch the piece and feel the ridges and depressions.Andreas Reichinger started making 3D versions of artwork in 2010.He said this reproduction was his most difficult project because the couple’s robes are so detailed.
Dominika Raditsch is a blind museum visitor. She touched the reproduction. As she moved her hands around it she said,“Exactly, can you see these? There are so many details.” Raditsch said she can imagine what the original painting looks like when she touched the reproduction.“It’s somehow round. You can feel it. You can feel it. It comes with it. And in many places it’s so smooth. And then I think to myself that it probably shines too!” Raditsch said.
The Belvedere is not the only museum to have 3D versions of its artwork. Some of the pieces at the Prado, in Madrid, Spain, have reproductions that can be touched. That means one day, blind art fans anywhere in the world could download the source files and print the reproductions themselves.
