Sunday is April Fools' Day, a day when you are encouraged to play tricks on loved ones and even the people you meet at the bus stop. It's a strange tradition, but how did it get started?‎ Nobody is completely sure about the origin of this, the silliest of holidays. However, the urban legend experts at Snopes. com say that most experts owe it to Pope Gregory XⅢ, who, in the 1500s, gave the world the Gregorian calendar.‎ In 1562, the Gregorian calendar moved the first day of the year from April l to January l.  Word did eventually get around, but some people were a bit slow to hear the news. These folks continued celebrating the new year on April l , unaware that they were now three months behind the times. These "April fools" were tricked by those who knew it. The tradition eventually made its way to the US.‎ And it's still going strong. Over the past week, Web searches on " April Fools'  Day jokes"  and " April Fools' Day tricks" have more than doubled, and related lookups for "easy April Fools' Day tricks" and "April Fools' Day jokes for work" have also increased greatly. Bottom line: Keep your guard up,  especially if somebody offers you a word search puzzle. Lookups for "impossible April Fools' Day word searches" are up by 200%.‎ But really, there is no way to be certain you'll escape trickery because even companies are out to trick you on April l. In 1957, the BBC reported Swiss farmers were harvesting spaghetti(意大利面)  from trees.  And in 1996,  Taco Bell took out ads in major newspapers announcing that the company had purchased the Liberty Bell and renamed it the Taco Liberty Bell.‎ ‎24. What is the author's purpose of writing the text?‎ A. To teach us how to avoid being tricked.‎ B. To point out the best way to trick others.‎ C. To introduce the history of April Fools' Day.‎ D. To stress the importance of April Fools' Day.‎ ‎25. What can we know from Paragraph 3?‎ A. April lst was once the first day of the year.‎ B. April Fools' Day was set by Pope Gregory XⅢ.‎ C. April Fools' Day has been celebrated for thousands of years.‎ D. Started in the US, April Fools' Day is popular around the world.‎ ‎26. From the 4th paragraph, we can learn that      .‎ A. people enjoy being April Fools B. April Fools' Day is still very popular C. those tricks used on April 1 are much the same D. people like to celebrate April Fools' Day online ‎27. The examples listed in the last paragraph are used to show       .‎ A. a modern farming technology B. what newspapers without ads are like C. how the Taco Liberty Bell got its name D. how some companies trick the public C Hi, everybody. Over the past couple months, most of the political headlines you’ve read have probably been about the government shutdown and the launch of the Affordable Care Act(平价医疗法案). And I know that many of you have rightly never been more frustrated with Washington.‎ But if you look beyond those headlines, there are some good things happening in our economy. And that’s been my top priority(优先考虑)since the day I walked into the Oval Office.‎ After decades in which the middle class was working harder and harder just to keep up, and a punishing recession(衰退)that made it worse, we made the tough choices required not just to recover from crisis, but to rebuild on a new foundation for stronger, more durable economic growth.‎ Five years later, we have fought our way back. Our businesses have created 7.8 million new jobs in the past 44 months. Another 200,000 Americans went back to work last month.‎ The American auto industry has come back with more than 350,000 new jobs –-- jobs putting out and selling the high-tech, fuel-efficient cars the world wants to buy. And they’re leading the charge in a business that has added jobs for the first time since the 1990s –-- a big reason why our businesses sell more goods and services “Made in America” than ever before.‎ We decided to stop our addiction to foreign oil. And today, we produce more renewable energy than ever, more natural gas than anybody, and for the first time in nearly 20 years, America now produces more oil than we buy from other countries.‎ We decided to fix a broken health care system. And even though the task has been rough, so far, about 500,000 Americans gain health coverage starting January 1st. And by the way, health care costs are growing at the slowest rate in 50 years.‎ And one more thing: since I took office, we’ve cut our deficits (赤字) by more than half. And that makes it easier to invest in the things that create jobs –-- education, research, and so on.‎ Imagine how much farther along we could be if both parties were working together. Think ‎ about what we could do if the few didn’t hold the economy hostage (人质) every few months, or waste time on dozens of votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act rather than try to help us fix it.‎ In the weeks ahead, I’ll keep talking about my plan to build a better bargain for the middle class. Good jobs. A good education. A chance to buy a home, save, and retire. And yes, the financial security of affordable health care. And I’ll look for any willing partners who want to help.‎ Because of your hard work and tough sacrifices over the past five years, we’re pointed in the right direction. But we’ve got more work to do to keep moving that way. And as long as I’m President, I’ll keep doing everything I can to create jobs, grow the economy, and make sure that everyone who works hard has a chance to get ahead. Thanks, and have a great weekend.‎ ‎28. Which of the following is not the reason for people’s frustration with the government?‎ A. The government shutdown B. Unemployment rate C. The addiction to foreign oil D. Cancelling the Affordable Care Act ‎29. Why does the president mention more goods and services “Made in America”?‎ A. To show that American goods and services are very popular.‎ B. To indicate that American people should be dependent on themselves.‎ C. To show that the employment rate has been increased.‎ D. To show that American auto industry enjoys high technology.‎ ‎30. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “repeal”?‎ A. put an end to B. try hard to fix C. make stronger D. get accustomed to ‎31. According to the speech, which of the following can be implied?‎ A. American people have every reason to feel frustrated with the government.‎ B. Health care costs are growing at the slowest rate in 50 years.‎ C. The president feels sorry that the economy is not moving in the right direction.‎ D. Some government officials don’t agree with the president on the medical care system.‎ D While residents of wealthy nations tend to have greater life satisfaction, new research shows that those living in poorer nations report having greater meaning in life.‎ These findings, published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological science, suggest that meaning in life may be higher in poorer nations as a result of greater religiosity (笃信宗教). As countries become richer, religion becomes less central to people’s lives and they lose a sense of meaning in life.‎ ‎“Thus far, the wealth of nations has been almost always associated with longevity, health, happiness or life satisfaction,” explains psychological scientist Shigehiro Oishi of the University of Virginia. “Given that meaning in life is an important aspect of overall well-being, we wanted to look more carefully at differential patterns, correlates (相关物), and predictors for meaning in life.”‎ Oishi and colleague Ed Diener of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign investigated life satisfaction, meaning, and well-being by examining data from the 2007 Gallup World Poll, a large-scale survey of over 140,000 participants from 132 countries. In addition to answering a basic life satisfaction question, participants were asked: “Do you feel your life has an important purpose or meaning?” and “Is religion an important part of your daily life?”‎ The data revealed some unexpected trends:‎ ‎“Among Americans, those who are high in life satisfaction are also high in meaning in life,” says Oishi. “But when we looked at the societal level of analysis, we found a completely different pattern of the association between meaning in life and life satisfaction.”‎ When looking across many countries, Oishi and Diener found that people in wealthier nations were more educated, had fewer children, and expressed more individualistic attitudes compared to those in poorer countries – all factors that were associated with higher life satisfaction but a significantly lower sense of meaning in life.”‎ The data suggest that religiosity may play an important role: Residents of wealthier nations, where religiosity is lower, reported less meaning in life and had higher suicide rates than poorer countries.‎ According to the researchers, religion may provide meaning to life to the extent that it helps people to overcome personal difficulty and cope with the struggles of working to survive in poor economic conditions:‎ ‎“Religion gives a system that connects daily experiences with the coherent whole (连贯的整体) and a general structure to one’s life … and plays a critical role in constructing meaning out of extreme hardship,” the researchers write.‎ Oishi and Diener hope to reproduce these findings using more comprehensive measures of meaning and religiosity, and are interested in following countries over time to track whether economic prosperity gives rise to less religiosity and less meaning in life.‎ ‎32.Which of the following questions couldn’t the participants have answered?‎ A. Does your life have a purpose or meaning?‎ B. Do you have s living abroad?‎ C. Are you satisfied with your everyday life?‎ D. Is religion involved in your daily life?‎ ‎33.Which of the following statements is true?‎ A. Those who have higher life satisfaction usually have lower sense of meaning in life.‎ B. People in wealthier nations were more educated, have fewer children and express less individualistic attitudes compared to those in poorer countries.‎ C. Religion may provide meaning to life in that people can get strong support from it in face of hardship.‎ D. Wealthy people are more likely to commit suicide than poor people.‎ ‎34.What can be inferred from the passage?‎ A. The poorer a country is, the more religious its people are.‎ B. Economic prosperity gives rise to less religiosity and less meaning in life.‎ C. If you want to find meaning in life, you must practice a religion.‎ D. Meaning in life doesn’t have much to do with the amount of wealth one possesses.‎ ‎35.The main purpose of the passage is to explain the possible reason why ______.‎ A. greater life satisfaction leads to lower sense of meaning B. residents of poorer nations enjoy greater meaning in life C. residents of poorer nations are so religious D. residents of wealthy nations have greater life satisfaction 第二部分 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Some Helpful Tips for a Happier You I've been one of sad people before. The truth is everyone will have one of those periods when things seem to be going wrong, so you don’t have to worry so much. The important thing is to learn to control your temper so that you may not do or say anything you’ll regret. Here are three useful tips:‎ First, talk to someone you trust about how you feel. This is a good way of letting your anger out without hurting others or yourself. Second, go outdoors and play team games with your friends, as ‎ physical exercise is an effective way to get rid of anger. And third, remain optimistic about your future.
