When I came back from school, the first thing I noticed was a box with items I recognized from my dad's office.
“What are you doing?” I asked casually.
“Andrew, I was laid off today,” he answered quietly. I was sure he was joking. “No, you weren't. Why are you really home?”
Then I noticed his seriousness and realized he was telling the truth. My father had always been a hard worker and prided himself on his career. Providing for our family had been his joy, and I guessed I had taken his work for granted.
My father's unemployment created many changes in our lives. For starters, he was home all the time, which meant my bed had to be made, my room cleaned up, and my homework done right after school. I would come home every day to find him at the computer searching for jobs. I began
to notice how down he seemed, and how losing his job had affected his self-esteem, though he tried to be optimistic. For the first time, I saw my dad as vulnerable. He asked my brother and me to spend less. I gave up my allowance, which even though it wasn't much, felt like the right thing to do. I also found a part-time job.
After several difficult months of searching, my dad decided to go in a totally different direction. He explained that he never wanted to be laid off again, so he was going to start his own business. Day by day, I watched him build it, and I admired how much time and energy he expended.
One evening I asked if he needed help. “Only__if__it__doesn't__interfere__with__school,” he said.
I showed up at his office the next afternoon, and most afternoons after that for two months. I always knew he was a hard worker, but watching him in action really impacted me. Although this was one of the worst experiences for our family, it taught me a lot about dealing with adversity. Now I know that through creative problem-solving, I can always find Plan B, ask for help, and take risks. What I have learned from my dad's understanding of business and his work ethic are two of the most important lessons I will ever learn, and will be my foundations for success.
(B)24. The author's father always stayed at home because ________.

(C)25. What made the author know the truth?
A. The box from his father's office. B. His father's words.
C. His father's expression. D. Being informed by his family.
【解析】第四段Then I noticed his seriousness and realized he was telling the truth.可知,父亲说话时很严肃,让作者意识到父亲的话是真的。
(C)26. By saying “Only if it doesn't interfere with school”, the author's father seemed ________.
A. to refuse the author's advice on the new business
B. to show his discontent with the author's schoolwork
C. to have said yes to the author's offer of help
D. to be looking forward to the author's good behavior at school
【解析】该句的意思是“只要不妨碍你的学业”。这暗示父亲同意了作者的提议。同时下文I showed up at his office the next afternoon, and most afternoons after that for two months.也可知。
(D)27. It can be inferred from the text that ________.
A. the author's father was more optimistic to stay at home

C. the author's father offered little allowance to the author

Yelp, the San Francisco Internet company that makes reviews of restaurants and other businesses across a large part of America, is getting into the food delivery business.
Today, the company has announced that it has agreed to acquire Eat24, a food company that delivers food to homes on behalf of partner restaurants. Yelp is paying $134 million for the company—$75 million in cash and the rest in stock. Eat24 works with 20,000 restaurants in more than 1,500 cities all over the U.S.
On Yelp's reviews site, you can find new restaurants to suit your tastes, and now that the company is acquiring Eat24, the idea is that it will also let you take the next step: order food to your door.
“If you're looking at a restaurant, you want to be able to book that restaurant,” Yelp co-founder and CEO Jeremy said in a Tuesday interview. “If we can integrate(融入) that into the Yelp experience, it makes the site much better.”
The move is just one way that some of Internet's most recognizable names are branching into online food delivery to improve their existing business. Last August, payments company Square bought Caviar, a high-end quick food delivery service. And that same month, Uber tested a fast food delivery service called UberFRESH, which aimed to deliver meals from local restaurants to customers in less than 10 minutes.
In each case, food delivery can provide an added source of income, and it can also help these companies push the use of their existing services. The market for food delivery is hardly small, and mobile technologies can speed up the process, potentially expanding the business even further.
(C)28. How does Yelp pay for the company Eat24?
A. Totally by cheque. B. Totally in cash.
C. Partly in stock. D. Only in credit.
【解析】细节理解题。从第二段倒数第二句Yelp is paying $134 million for the company—$75 million in cash and the rest in stock.可知,Yelp收购Eat24公司的钱一部分是现金支付,另一部分是股票支付。
(D)29. Customers can do all the following on the new Yelp's website EXCEPT ________.
A. finding the restaurants they like B. booking a restaurant they like
C. ordering food to their door D. enjoying much cheaper food
【解析】细节理解题。 第三、四段提到了find new restaurants to suit your tastes, order food to your door, book that restaurant几项, 至于食物是否有优惠,这里并没有提到。
(D)30. What does the underlined word “acquire” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Bargain. B. Claim. C. Request. D. Purchase.
【解析】词义猜测题。
(C)31. From the passage, we can infer that many companies ________.
A. begin to set up their own food branches
B. make little money from their existing business
C. begin to attach importance to food delivery making
D. give up the present business and turn to food making
【解析】推理判断题。从最后两段提到的一系列公司开始收购提供食物外送服务的公司以及The market for food delivery is hardly small一句可以判断,很多公司开始重视食物外送这个市场。
D
After months of not commenting on the making of the biopic(传记片) Jobs, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has finally seen the finished film—and he's ready to weigh in.
The film was clever and funny in parts—but it got much wrong, Wozniak told Bloomberg reporter Emily Chang.
Primarily, Wozniak was disappointed by the way the movie portrayed people that Steve Jobs had cooperated with and learned from in his early days as a businessman.
“I did not like seeing a lot of people I know not get the respect that they deserve in their relationship with Steve Jobs [in the film],” Wozniak said. He didn't go into detail about who those people were.
“When you make a movie about something that's real life you can never get [everything] right...but the concept of each scene and what it implies should be right and there were a lot of things wrong [in Jobs] that I knew about,” Wozniak continued. This has become a reoccurring theme in Wozniak's many press interviews about the film.
Wozniak acknowledged the talent of actors in the film and described the film as “entertaining”, if not completely real to life.
Of course, Ashton Kutcher—who stars in Jobs and helped to produce the film—has described his own take on the criticism.
“Woz is being paid by another company to support a different Steve Jobs film,” Kutcher said in an interview with Hollywood Reporter, referencing the Alan Sorkin film scheduled to come out later this year. “It's__personal__for__him,__but__it's__also__business.__We__have__to__keep__that__in__mind.”
Wozniak soon responded to Kutcher's attack in a post he wrote on Gizmodo: I suspect a lot of what was wrong with the film came from Ashton's own image of Jobs. Ashton made some dishonest and wrong statements about me recently (including my supposedly having said that the ‘movie’ was bad, which was probably Ashton believing pop press headlines) and that I didn't like the movie because I'm paid to consult on another one. These are examples of Ashton still being in character. Either film would have paid me to consult, but the Jobs one already had a script written. I can't take that creative leadership from someone else. And I was turned off by the Jobs script. But I still hoped for a great movie.
(B)32. What was Wozniak's opinion about the biopic Jobs?
A. He thought the film was clever and funny.
B. He thought the film had its strengths and weaknesses.
C. He didn't go into detail about who Jobs' partners were and what the film was about.
D. He was disappointed in people who Steve Jobs had worked with.
【解析】细节理解题。 文章第二段The film was clever and funny in parts—but it got much wrong, Wozniak told Bloomberg reporter Emily Chang.和第六段Wozniak...and described the film as “entertaining”, if not completely real to life.沃兹尼亚克肯定了电影中演员们的精彩表演,并说虽然电影没能完全还原真实的生活,它也是一部带有“娱乐性”的电影。
(C)33. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A. Wozniak was disappointed with the portrayed people.
B. Wozniak was satisfied with the portrayed people.
C. Jobs was a businessman in his early days.
D. Jobs was learned from by many businessmen.
【解析】细节理解题。 文章第三段Wozniak was disappointed by the way the movie portrayed people that Steve Jobs had cooperated with and learned from in his early days as a businessman从中可以看出C最符合题意。
(D)34. What do the underlined sentences in Paragraph 8 suggest?
A. Kutcher accepted Wozniak's criticism.
B. Kutcher reminded readers that Wozniak was a businessman.
C. Kutcher made readers keep Wozniak in mind.
D. Kutcher criticized Wozniak's incorrect comment.
【解析】 推理判断题。从下一段Wozniak soon responded to Kutcher's attack in a post he wrote on Gizmodo中可以看出Wozniak回应了Kutcher的抨击,可见D符合句意。
(B)35. What's the author's attitude toward the biopic Jobs?
A. Subjective. B. Objective.
C. Sympathetic. D. Supportive.
How strong are you?
How strong are you? That is a tough question to answer, whether you are a man or a woman. But, really, I want to ask... how do you define your strength? How do you know your limits? How do you know just how much you've got? When push comes to shove, we often discover that we are much stronger than we think.
36.__C__
Strength is not always about pure physical strength. 37.__G__ It is about the capacity to get things done.I know some people who are intellectually strong, but they get very little done in their jobs. And I know others who find work extremely challenging, but are able to move mountains by their sheer drive and hard work. They possess inner strength. More interesting, is that these productive hard-workers often don't even notice the load. Bystanders are not only amazed, but often ask, “How do you do it?” The answer usually comes back, “I just work harder than the others.” So, why are some people able to do more? What gives them added drive? What gives them extra strength? Could it be, they have simply given themselves permission to do more?
Self-imposed limits
What I have observed is that most people impose(加强) their own limits. They limit their output based on self-framed constraints(限制)of their capabilities and strengths. Sometimes these boundaries are based on past experiences. Sometimes they are based on perceived(感觉的) capacities. Sometimes these limits are based on nothing.
I can't do that. (Why?)
That is too much for me. (How do you know?)
I can't put in that much effort. (What would happen if you did?)
I am not smart enough to solve that. (Can you be sure if you haven't tried?)
38.__E__
Pushing it...
Many people are going through the motions, but are nowhere near their limits. If you want to be stronger, you have to push your boundaries. 39.__D__ In the gym, bodybuilders discovered this long ago. But, the same principle is true when it comes to inner strength, discipline and drive. Want to test your limits? Push yourself. Test your self-perceived constraints to see how accurate they are. Make sure your goals are slightly beyond what you think can be achieved.
You are stronger than you think
40.__A__ As you go through your day, challenge your capacity. Test your limits. Push yourself, to find your true boundaries and define your strength. When you discover how much you've really got, you may surprise even yourself. What are your self-imposed limits? Which do you need to push? When have you found that you were much stronger than you thought?
A. Most people underestimate their strength.
B. Don't impose your own limits.
C. What is strength?
D. Pushing it is what it takes to increase your limits.
E. So, how do we break through these limits? How do we get stronger?
F. You're cleverer than others.
G. Rather, it is about willpower, discipline and drive.

Dear Elise,
How is everything going? Since I have taken your online course for half a year, I have come to find you a very interesting and creative teacher. Therefore I am writing to request you to come to China to teach English.
It really pays off to devote yourself to helping young people in China with their English. On the one hand, with increasing enthusiasm for English learning, qualified native speakers are desperately needed. On the other hand, it's also a good opportunity for you to get a well paid job and experience Chinese culture.
If you will take my request into account, please do some research to find out some highly effective approaches to teaching English speaking and listening. Hope to hear from you soon!
Yours,
Li Hua

Text 1
M: I called you three times last night. You didn't pick up the phone. Where were you?
W: At home, of course, but since I had rushed to meet my friend at the restaurant, I left my phone at work.
Text 2
W: I was afraid that it would be difficult to make friends since I'm new here at school. Thank
you for having a party to introduce me to your friends.
M: My pleasure. Everyone was anxious to meet you.
Text 3
M: Hey Jenny. It's already April. Aren't your parents coming to visit this month?
W: Yes, they have planned to but then an emergency turned up and they have put off their visit for two months.
Text 4
W: Did you read the editorial in the paper about the mayor's speech?
M: I sure did. But I think they twisted the meaning of what he said.
Text 5
W: How long do you think it will take to complete the walk?
M: In my opinion, it will take 42 minutes in all, including 20 minutes' breaks.
Text 6
M: The hike will last for two hours. We'll start at sea level and then climb up a few hills. Are you ready?
W: I sure am. The one-hour yoga class this morning really made me full of energy. I'm feeling so good I bet I can race you up those hills.
M: That won't be necessary. We want to take our time to enjoy the sights along the way. We'll point out certain plants, some of the insects, and watch out for possible snakes.
W: Snakes? Ah...I definitely will be racing you up the hill.
M: Don't worry. Nature is a wonderful thing. We are all meant to enjoy together—snakes, spiders, trees and us humans.
Text 7
W: Now Mr. Snow, what can you remember about the attack?
M: Well, I was working late yesterday evening.
W: What time did you leave your office?
M: At a quarter past nine.
W: Are you sure?
M: Oh, yes. I looked at my watch.
W: What did you do then?
M: Well, I locked the door, and I was walking to my car when somebody hit me on the head.
W: Did you see the attacker?
M: No, he was wearing a stocking over his head.
W: Tell me, Mr. Snow, how did you break your leg?
M: Well, when the doctors were putting me into the car, they dropped me!

W: Is the weather in San Francisco so bad all the time in the fall?
M: Yes. This is a typical autumn. It gets worse though. At least it's not raining that much.
W: That's too bad.
M: You'll get used to it. In the meantime, you'll have to watch a lot of movies. Seems like the only thing to do with the bad weather.
W: Too expensive. Can you believe how much movies cost these days?
M: Yeah. It's crazy. It's like nine dollars a movie.
W: Unless it's a date. I'm not going to pay that much to watch a movie.
Text 9
M: I'd like to send this package to Canada. Do you think it will arrive before the weekend?
W: Not by regular mail. If you're willing to pay for express shipping, it will definitely get there before Saturday. Let's see how much it weighs.
M: It's mostly books, so it's quite heavy.
W: Yes, it's over five pounds. The express shipping rate will be about thirty dollars.
M: Thirty dollars?! I'm afraid that's more than I planned for. But I have to get these books to my sister before her classes start next week.
W: Well, it's only Tuesday, so you could send them first class. That would only cost you ten dollars, and the package should arrive in three to five business days.
M: But in that case, they might not arrive until next week, right?
W: I'm afraid that's a possibility. With first-class mail, we can only guarantee delivery by next Tuesday.
M: Well, I guess I'll have to pay for the express shipping and hope my sister pays me back.
W: OK. Your total comes to twenty-nine dollars and fifty cents.
Text 10
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Attention please. I am glad to inform you of tomorrow's activities for freshmen. Firstly, let me read you a booklet. It tells you a bit more about the school, the courses and the social activities we offer. Now, on the first page, there's an outline of next morning's activities. At 10 o'clock, all the new students will gather in the Main Hall to meet the principal and the rest of the staff. The principal's talk will last about fifteen minutes and then the director of studies will talk to you for half an hour about the courses and the different requirements for each. After that, the student adviser will tell you about the various services and activities we offer to students. After that we'll go to the language lab at 11 o'clock. There you'll have a test to help us find your level of English so that we can put you in the right class. We still have a couple of things to do in the afternoon. At 2 p.m., you'll watch a video about the school life in classroom 521, Main Building. At 4 p.m., a lecture about course registration will be given.
