A happy one or a meaningful one?‎ ‎“Can’t I have both?” you might ask. “Aren’t the two supposed to be __36__? Surely someone leading a meaningful life will be happy, __37__ one can find meaning in the pursuit of happiness.”‎ ‎__38__, however, this doesn’t appear to be the case. A new study suggests that a happy life and a meaningful life are __39__ the same thing, and that you might be better off __40__ just one.‎ The Atlantic News reported that researchers asked nearly 400 US citizens aged 18 to 78 __41__ they thought their lives were meaningful and happy. These people were asked about their __42__ toward meaning, happiness and many other aspects of life including stress levels, spending patterns and family life.‎ The researchers found that a meaningful life and a happy life do have something __43__, but they are __44__ different — living a happy life is connected with being a “taker”, __45__ living a meaningful life is connected with a “giver”.‎ Happiness, the researchers found, usually __46__ getting what we want, which is why the pursuit of happiness often leads to __47__ behavior. __48__ have needs and desires and thus can feel happy too. What makes humans __49__ is not the pursuit of happiness, but rather the pursuit of meaning.‎ We often derive meaning from helping others or making a __50__ for some “greater good”. And sacrifice often comes at the expense of happiness. That’s because people who do meaningful things usually have higher levels of __51__ in their lives than happy people. For example, __52__ in poor, rural schools might be meaningful, but it might also be difficult and draining.‎ Experiencing hardship and negative events, the study found, reduces your happiness but increases your __53__ that you’re living a meaningful life. No one knows this better than Viktor Frankl, an Austrian-Jewish writer who __54__ the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp. “If there is meaning in life __55__,” he once wrote, “then there must be meaning in suffering”.‎ ‎36. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”‎ Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip (掷) a coin. Heads—the commander, and tails—the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.‎ Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?‎ Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance. Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster’s office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my option to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!‎ ‎58. What did the author’s classmates think about his report?‎ ‎ A. Controversial. B. Ridiculous. C. Boring. D. Puzzling.‎ ‎59. Why was the author confused about the task?‎ ‎ A. He was unfamiliar with American history.‎ ‎ B. He followed the advice and flipped a coin.‎ ‎ C. He forgot his teacher’s instruction.‎ ‎ D. He was new at the school.‎ ‎60. In the end, the author turned things around _______.‎ ‎ A. by redoing his task B. through his own efforts ‎ C. with the help of his grandfather D. under the guidance of his headmaster C In a unique research cooperation between Stratasys’ Education, R&D departments and MIT’s Self-Assembly Lab, a new process is being developed, known as 4D Printing.‎ The 4D printing concept, which allows materials to “self-assemble (自行组装)” into 3D structures, was initially proposed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty member Skylar Tibbits. Tibbits and his team combined a strand (缕) of plastic with a layer made out of “smart” material that could self-assemble in water. They advanced this concept by creating materials that can change into several different complicated shapes, though this kind of material remains the bottleneck of 4D technology.‎ To many people that are just starting to get used to the idea of 3D printers, the name 4D is causing confusion because they cannot understand where this fourth “dimension” coming from. 4D technology shares many of the same principles of 3D printing and is essentially still about creating a new, 3D structure out of certain component; however, Tibbits states the fourth dimension at work here comes from concept of the fourth dimension of time. The difference between these 3D and 4D creations is that these new forms have the ability to transform and adapt over time.‎ ‎4D printing works through self-assembly — a system where “disordered elements form an “ordered” structure via an interaction. With these 4D printed materials, these disordered materials are strands or sheets of specially designed materials. Environmental changes then stimulate (刺激) a response from them so that they form a preprogrammed shape.‎ The idea of having adaptable technology that only relies on energy and non-human interactions raises some interesting questions about where 4D printing can be used and the practical applications in dangerous environments. This could mean improved infrastructures in extreme conditions, leading to a reduced need for workers to put themselves at risk, but the potential goes even further than that. The technology promises exciting new possibilities for a variety of applications. A solar panel or similar product could be produced in a flat shape onto which functional devices can be easily installed. It could then be changed to a compact shape for packing and shipping. After arriving at its destination, the product could be stimulated to form a different shape that serves its function. Also it could be used to build furniture, bikes, cars and even buildings. As with many of the ideas being put forward, it is easy to go a step too far into the extreme, but this just shows the potential of 4D in comparison to 3D.‎ The next stage for the research is to move from printing single strands to sheets and eventually whole structures. And water need not be the process's only energy source.‎ ‎61. Which of the following displays the fourth dimension of 4D printing?‎ A. 4D printing creates a new, 3D structure out of certain component.‎ B. 4D technology reduces need for workers to put themselves at risk.‎ C. 4D technology can be used in many more fields than 3D printing.‎ D. 4D printed materials reshape themselves with conditions changing.‎ ‎62. The major problem concerning the development of 4D printing lies in __________.‎ A. producing essential 4D printers ‎ B. creating proper smart materials C. providing a suitable environment ‎ D. promoting practical applications ‎63. What does the passage lead you to believe?‎ A. 4D printing will take the place of 3D printing in the near future.‎ B. Most aspects of our daily life can be affected by 4D printing.‎ C. 4D printing will benefit humans by saving labor somehow.‎ D. Smart materials can be transformed into other types of material.‎ ‎64. It can be inferred from the passage that __________.‎ A. electricity is not used in 4D technology B. 4D printing has been applied in industry C. more potential of 4D is to be discovered D. smart materials can change in a random way D ‎ In 2004, when my daughter Becky was ten, she and my husband, Joe, were united in their desire for a dog. As for me, I shared none of their canine lust.‎ ‎ But why, they pleaded. “Because I don’t have time to take care of a dog.” But we’ll do it. “Really? You’re going to walk the dog? Feed the dog? Bathe the dog?” Yes, yes, and yes. “I don’t believe you.” We will. We promise.‎ ‎ They didn’t. From day two (everyone wanted to walk the cute puppy that first day), neither thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots, to schedule her vet appointments, to feed and clean her, Misty knew this on day one. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life (small, medium, and large), she calculated, “The medium one is the sucker in the pack.”‎ ‎ Quickly, she and I developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld (心灵融合). She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, beam her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand — which, strangely, I almost always did. In no time, she became my feet as I read, and splaying across my stomach as I watched television.‎ ‎ Even so, part of me continued to resent walking duty. Joe and Becky had promised. Not fair, I’d balk (不心甘情愿地做) silently as she and I walked. “Not fair,” I’d loudly remind anyone within earshot upon our return home.‎ ‎ Then one day — January 1, 2007, to be exact — my husband’s doctor uttered an unthinkable word: leukemia (白血病). With that, I spent eight to ten hours a day with Joe in the hospital, doing anything and everything I could to ease his discomfort. During those six months of hospitalizations, Becky, 12 at the time, adjusted to other adults being in the house when she returned from school. My work colleagues adjusted to my taking off at a moment's notice for medical emergencies. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old routine remained.‎ ‎ Save one: Misty still needed walking. At the beginning, when friends offered to take her through her paces, I declined because I knew they had their own households to deal with.‎ ‎ As the months went by, I began to realize that I actually wanted to walk Misty. The walk in the morning before I headed to the hospital was a quiet, peaceful time to gather my thoughts or to just be before the day's medical drama unfolded. The evening walk was a time to shake off the day's upsets and let the worry tracks in my head go to white noise.‎ ‎ When serious illness visits your household, it's not just your daily routine and your assumptions about the future that are no longer familiar. Pretty much everyone you know acts differently.‎ ‎ Not Misty. Take her for a walk, and she had no interest in Joe's blood counts or bone marrow test results. On the street or in the park, she had only one thing on her mind: squirrels! She was so joyous that even on the worst days, she could make me smile. On a daily basis she reminded me that life goes on.‎ ‎ After Joe died in 2009, Misty slept on his pillow.‎ ‎ I'm grateful— to a point. The truth is, after years of balking, I've come to enjoy my walks with Misty. As I watch her chase after a squirrel, throwing her whole being into the here-and-now of an exercise that has never once ended in victory, she reminds me, too, that no matter how harsh the present or unpredictable the future, there's almost always some measure of joy to be extracted from the moment.‎ ‎65. Why didn't the writer agree to raise a dog at the beginning of the story?‎ A. She was afraid the dog would get the family into trouble.‎ B. It would be her business to take care of the dog.‎ C. Her husband and daughter were united as one.‎ D. She didn't want to spoil her daughter.‎ ‎66. Which of the following is the closest in meaning to “The medium is the sucker in the pack.” ‎ ‎(Paragraph 3)?‎ A. “The middle-aged person loves me most.”‎ B. “The medium-sized woman is the hostess.”‎ C. “The man in the middle is the one who has the final say.”‎ D. “The woman is the kind and trustworthy one in the family.”‎ ‎67. It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that _______.‎ A. Misty was quite clever B. Misty could solve math problems C. the writer was a slow learner D. no one walked Misty the first day ‎68. The story came to its turning point when ________.‎ A. Joe died in 2009 B. Joe fell ill in 2007‎ C. the writer began to walk the dog D. the dog tried to please the writer ‎ ‎69. Why did the writer continue to walk Misty while Joe was in hospital?‎ ‎ A. Misty couldn’t live without her.‎ B. Her friends didn’t offer any help.‎ C. The walk provided her with spiritual comfort.‎ D. She didn't want Misty to be others’ companion.‎ ‎70. What is the message the writer wants to convey in the passage?‎ ‎ A. One should learn to enjoy hard times.‎ ‎ B .A disaster can change everything in life.‎ ‎ C. Moments of joy suggest that there is still hope ahead.‎ ‎ D. Newspapers not only offer information on current events, but they can also be used to test your child’s knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and more. ‎ Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How ‎ Have your child read the first couple of paragraphs of a news story. Ask them to write down all of the important facts, such as who, what, where, when, why and how. This helps parents to see if their children comprehend the basic facts and information they read. ‎ Grammar ‎ Parents can monitor a child’s understanding of grammatical parts of speech (词性) without a grammar textbook. Ask your child to read a paragraph in an article and then list a specific number of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and the like, which serves more of a test of their grammatical knowledge. Encourage them to list each of these parts of speech in a paragraph. Then, reread the paragraph to see if they missed anything. ‎ Persuasion ‎ Ask your child to select an advertisement from the newspaper. Have them investigate how specific words or phrases influence their feelings about a particular product. Then, encourage them to create an advertisement of their own for an item they do not like. Tell them not to show their true feelings and try to make people want to buy this unwanted item. After that, ask them to list the persuasive techniques used in their ad. ‎ Facts vs Opinions ‎ Select an editorial for your middle schooler to read. Have your child divide a piece of paper into two columns, one marked fact, and the other marked opinion. Have your student decide which column it fits under. This will help your child better understand facts versus opinions. Another related exercise is responding to an editorial. Encourage your child to write letters to the editor or responses to editorials or other articles. Before your child sends his or her letter, check the opinion section to see what requirements there are. ‎ Headlines and Synonyms (同义词) ‎ Ask your middle schooler to rewrite a couple of headlines using the synonyms of the original words. Compare the headlines. Do the original versions or the rewrites sound better? To put it in other words, a friend in need is a friend indeed. For example, my best friend Mike displayed the true meaning of friendship. It was he who encouraged me to restart when I was depressed with the failure in the mid-term exam.‎ Making a good friend like Mike is anything but easy. First, you should win the trust of your intended friend. Let him know you are the one worth his friend. Second, do something for your friend. A friend is not your slave but the one you should serve. To conclude, we can only gain friendship by paying others friendship.‎ 录音原文:‎ Text 1 ‎ W: Why did you take all of the bowls out of the cupboard? (1)‎ M: I’m going to make daddy a surprise cake for tonight! We still need some sugar.‎ W: I’ll get some for you. ‎ Text 2 ‎ M: I just got back from Fisherman’s Wharf. Have you seen the Golden Gate Bridge yet? ‎ W: Yes, we actually walked across it on the weekend. It was so windy that we had to hang on to each other. (4)‎ Text 5 ‎ W: Aren’t you excited about the summer camp? ‎ M: I can’t wait to be at camp for two whole weeks! (5) There are only three weeks left until I get to be outside all day!‎ Text 6‎ M: My feet hurt. (17) They are decorated with broken glass, seashells, pottery, and other found objects. There are three tall pointed towers, four smaller towers, two walls, and even a place to sit that is covered by a roof. (18) The towers were built by one person: Simon Rodia. The artist, who was born in Italy in 1879, began constructing the Watts Towers in 1921 at the age of 42. (19) What he called “Nuestro Pueblo” or “Our Town” was his life’s work. The official name of his work is “The Watts Towers of Simon Rodia”. Rodia died in 1965. The Watts community claimed the towers as part of their heritage. (20) The Watts Towers Arts Center was founded to support arts education. It has worked with a lot of artists representing various mediums, such as visual arts, filmmaking, writing, music, and performing arts. The towers suffered little from the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and they are respected by locals and tourists. (20) ‎
