A couple of weeks ago, my grandfather was explaining his favorite expression, “Nothing is ever easy.” The following day, as I tried to complete my day’s work, I happened to notice a bumblebee on the skylight. The skylight was particularly high up, but I thought removing the bee would take no more than five minutes. An hour later, the bee still remained. All that had changed was that the living room was a mess and that I was dizzy from looking up into the sunlight. I did not expect to waste an hour on an insect so tiny, but by doing so, I understood what my grandfather meant.
It is not only time that we tend to underestimate --we don’t account for unexpected costs. We often imagine what can work in our favor, but we seldom think of all the negative things that could affect us. However, it is important to remember that your day or week or year might not go as planned, and that is completely normal. It is perfectly acceptable to feel challenged --even at a task you thought was simple --because that is part of life.
If you can accept that nothing will ever be easy, then life might seem slightly more manageable. In middle school, I thought high school might be easier because I could choose the classes I wanted to take. In high school, I thought college might be easier because I could have a schedule best suited for myself. Yet each time, I was both wrong and disappointed. After accepting that school wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) be easy, I found myself with a more positive attitude and improved results.
Of course, there should be preparations made to account for expenses or time. Doing so can only help you accomplish your goals in a better way. However, there is no need to regret ourselves when something stands in our path. Maybe we cannot see a bee coming our way, but we can always give ourselves the extra time to catch it.

When Central Bucks South became one of the first Philadelphia-area high schools to close due to fear of novel coronavirus exposure in early March, 16-year-old sophomore Andrew Chen knew that things were not going to return to normal as quickly as some of his peers hoped.
But still, the transition from seeing his friends on the swim team during daily practices to learning alone at home was jarring.
“I only have three years here at South, and it pains me to see one of them being wasted,” Chen said.
The coronavirus has disrupted everyone’s lives, but for students, the disruption(中断) feels particularly acute . Schools closed and graduation ceremonies were canceled. Summer plans, like
camps and internships (实习), are up in the air. And for recent college graduates, entering the job market in a time of severe unemployment rates is no easy task.
But right now, many students are trying to stay connected, fighting with false information, and figuring out the best ways they can help – through online method.
For Josh Harycki, 17, a senior student at the Shipley School in Philadelphia, the best way to contribute was to create a “social distancing pledge (承诺) ” for young people.
“I saw a lot of younger generations not paying attention,” he said. “They were ... still going out, hanging out with people. I thought that there had to be a way to reach younger folks, who were probably not watching the news.”
Harycki launched a call to action on social media and then built a website with a map that tracked the locations of people who’d signed the pledge. The site also shared links to accurate sources of information like the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Going from being around with friends for eight hours a day at school to being isolated at home all day wasn’t easy, said Harycki.
“We’ve definitely had times when we feel kind of bored at home,” he said. “We’re very social beings, and we’re used to having that school experience.”
Harycki knows that his peers are worried they can’t connect with their friends in the same way, so he created the social distancing pledge to reinforce (强调) that while everyone might be physically distant, they’re still connected.

Whether it’s Chinese social media like Sina Weibo, or Western media like Instagram and Facebook, videos can go viral in mere hours.
The wide range of viral videos suggests that popular concepts are largely random. After all, what links the recent broom challenge to funny internet cat videos?
According to scientists from Stanford University, US, the popularity of a video can be predicted by looking at how certain areas of a person’s brain react within the first few seconds of a video. This method has been called neuroforecasting (神经预测).
The team made the finding by recruiting 36 volunteers to watch a range of videos while being scanned with an FMRI – a machine that can monitor the changes in blood oxygen and flow.
Participants were shown 32 different videos and were monitored according to their brain responses in four different areas. The results showed that specific brain activity during the first four seconds of a video could effectively predict a person’s thoughts on a video and whether they would keep watching.
Using the FMRI results, the Stanford team consistently saw increased activity in the nucleus accumbens (伏核) and decreased activity in the anterior insula (前脑岛) parts of the brain while the participants were watching the most popular of the 32-video selection.
According to the study, these two brain regions are related to the feeling of expectation we get when we’re not certain of something’s outcome.
Stanford neuroscientist (神经学家) and the study’s author Brian Knutson said: “If we examine our subjects’ choices to watch the video or even their reported responses to the videos, they don’t tell us about the general response online … Only brain activity seems to forecast a video’s popularity on the internet.”
He added, “Future research might also systematically analyse the video content so content creators can use these findings to make their videos more popular.”
In the future, the team aims to use this type of FMRI experiment to understand “whether processes that generate individual choice can tell us something about choices made by large
groups of people”. According to Knutson, this could apply to shopping trends, charity support and general money-spending.
