John Adams (1735-1826)

“I like photography because it captures amazing things that you might not see again,” Timmy Walsh says. He takes pictures of flowers, sunsets and road signs. But those photos don’t usually end up in a scrapbook (剪贴簿) or on his bedroom walls.
When Timmy was five, he found out that his aunt Bev had lung cancer. He wanted to do something to help her. His first idea was to sell his photos from a lemonade-type stand in front of his house in Pennsylvania. “My mom said it wouldn’t work because we were not on a busy street,” Timmy explains.
His next idea was to have an art show. Timmy decorated his home with candles, flowers, and white lights. Then he arranged his photos. Timmy’s mom, Sheila, remembers: “Our dining-room table was filled, the living room — everything was filled with photos.” Friends, family, and Timmy’s teachers came to the show. He raised more than $300 for cancer research that night. “Aunt Bev was very happy and excited,” he says.
After a local newspaper wrote a story about Timmy’s photos, a volunteer offered to help him set up a website. As people learned about his cause, called Camera for a Cure, Timmy began receiving invitations to sell his pictures at art galleries and fund-raisers. Since then, his work has appeared in more than 20 shows.
When Timmy is at a show, he greets each customer and talks about what he was thinking when he took his photos. And he always shares facts about lung cancer. Sometimes donations and sales are slow, but that doesn’t bother him. “It doesn’t matter how much money we made because we just raised awareness,” he says. Timmy knows that finding a cure for lung cancer will take time and effort. So Timmy will keep doing his part by shooting and selling photos of the things he sees.

Do you have a business brain? Are you always looking for the next big idea? Maybe, like me,
you might feel setting up a new company is something you might do when you’re older, when you have more experience. But that’s not always the case.
While some of us may feel young adulthood is a time of uncertainly finding our place in the world, sleeping late and partying hard, others are already on a path to great business success. Take the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, who started his company as a young university student at Harvard in the US. There are many other examples of young entrepreneurs (企业家) who have become hugely successful, proving that there’s no minimum age to becoming top dog.
But to be the next business executive requires effort. You need to acquire a keen mind and good business intelligence and above all, you need enthusiasm. Starting a new business comes with an element of risk but if you are able to spot the next big idea, it’s probably worth giving it a try. Jessica Rose owns a jewelry making business and admits that “when I first started I had no business training but when I woke up one day, I thought I’d really love to be a jewelry designer.” She went on to be a successful young entrepreneur.
Being young and in business does have its drawbacks; you may worry you have nothing to bring to the table and that the people who work for you tend to be older and wiser. That’s what young British entrepreneur Suleman Sacranie found. He started his third business while studying chemistry at university. He says “now I’ve got two additional directors who have grey hair” but when they first started he says he could tell they were thinking in the back of their heads, “I’ve got a kid sitting in front of me.”
You may think setting up a new start-up is easier said than done. As well as ideas, you need financial backing and expert guidance. But if you’re studying hard at university and don’t have the desire to go into business and make your fortune, keep on studying – an education is priceless!

“Sitting in the same classroom, reading the same textbook, listening to the same teacher, boys and girls receive very different educations.” In fact, upon entering school, girls perform equal to or better than boys on nearly every measure of achievement, but by the time they graduate from high school or college, they have fallen behind.
This performance discrepancy is obvious throughout Canada. In Ontario, Education Minister Janet Ecker said that the testing results of grade 3 and grade 6 in math and reading showed that there are significant discrepancies in achievements and attitudes between boys and girls. In British Columbia, standardized testing indicates that girls perform better than boys at all levels of reading and writing, while almost matching them in math and science. But why are women less competitive after their graduation from college? The American Association of University Women published a report indicating that females receive less attention from teachers and that the attention that female students do receive is often more negative than attention received by boys. In fact, study of the social distinction of gender (性别) within schools shows that girls are improperly educated in the classroom.
The social distinction of gender within our schools assures that girls are made aware that they are unequal to boys. Every time students are seated or lined up by gender, teachers are telling that girls and boys should be treated differently. When bad behaviors are more tolerated for boys than for girls because “boys will be boys”, schools are treating females unfairly. There is some evidence that girls are becoming more academically successful than boys, however, examinations of the classroom show that girls and boys continue to be socialized in ways that work against
gender equality.

M: Today I’m talking to Marta Stanston, who runs her own “mobile restaurant”. Marta, how did you get into the restaurant business?
W: Well, I learnt to cook at college. I always wanted to open my own restaurant-but had no money. So I got a job as a chef. I had all sorts of ideas for new dishes, which the staff thought would sell, but the boss wasn’t interested. That’s when a friend told me about the “mobile restaurant” idea. It sounded great.
M: Tell us about it.
W: Well, it works like this: you decide on a menu-obviously you have to be able to cook-then you advertise it so people can book a meal. The most amazing thing is all the advertising is done through websites. People set up tables in their sitting-room, or in a city car park, an empty factory-anywhere in fact. And because you know how many people you’re cooking for, food doesn’t get wasted.
M: So why is it good for you?
W: Well, various reasons. Like, I could buy all the things without risk because customers pay in advance. The greatest advantage, though, is by having ten customers at most, I don’t need to hire a waiter.
M: Do you ever run into problems?
W: The whole experience is fun. People watch you cook and the atmosphere’s relaxed. I did one meal on a beach which almost went wrong because I didn’t think about the wind blowing sand
into people’s food. Fortunately, I’d brought a large umbrella to protect myself from the sun, so I put it around their table instead!

M: My name’ s Bob, and I’ve come to tell you about the York Dance Band, Now, if you want to have a god family party, like a wedding or an important birthday, and you want all your guests to dance after dinner, then don’t book a noisy disco. Have a live band instead. We play all kinds of dance music, including songs that every age group, from teenagers to grandmothers, can dance to.
The band has been together for ten years, but I only joined this year. Now the number of members has been increased from eight to twelve. I was looking for a band to join, and a friend of mine saw an advertisement in the local paper and persuaded me to apply.
Before I joined, the band didn’t have a separate singer, but they realized they needed one. They chose me because I’ve always enjoyed getting up and singing in front of an audience, and people say I’ve got a good voice. I’ve been in bands before. I even played the guitar rather badly in one, but this band is easily the best. I even enjoy the practices. Now, I’ll just play a little…
