He wanted a skateboard that could fit in his school locker and backpack, so he created one out of a used skateboard deck(板). But at that time, it was for private use.‎ ‎ Then his parents told him he had to start cleaning to pay for his surf lessons. Carson hated to clean, so he asked if he could start making and selling skateboards -- like the one he had made for himself. After getting permission, Carson collected used skateboard decks and adapted them into Locker Boards. They were all made by hand---each signed and numbered. These were one-of-a-kind!‎ ‎ Carson launched his online store last November and shipped boards around the country. Locker Boards were soon well-received because they were good for the planet, easy to take and fun to ride!‎ ‎ Vans found out about what Carson was doing and set up a recycling program for him at their Huntington Beach store and their City Block of Orange store. Kids who want to donate used decks to Carson can leave them at these locations. Kids can also mail Carson their used decks. A popular retail store, Jack's Surfboards, recently put Carson's Locker Boards in their Dana Point store.‎ ‎ In a few months, Carson has built a nationally recognized skateboard company. He was named by OC Family Magazine as one of the top 10 Whiz Kids of Orange County.‎ ‎ This year, Carson is donating $1 for every board he sells to the Tony Hawk Foundation because they are focused on supporting kids through skating.‎ ‎ Carson feels the most rewarding part of this whole experience is how he has become a role model for other kids. His final mission(使命) is to inspire kids to dream hard and work hard.‎ ‎24. Why did Carson make his first Locker Board skateboard?‎ A. To reuse an old skateboard deck.‎ B. To earn money for his surf lessons.‎ C. To avoid being asked to do housework.‎ D. To have a skateboard easy to store and carry.‎ ‎25. By inspiring kids' interest in skateboarding.‎ ‎27. Who has received help from Carson?‎ A. Jack's Surfboards. ‎ B. OC Family Magazine.‎ C. The Tony Hawk Foundation.‎ D. Vans' Huntington Beach store.‎ C Researchers who have been puzzling for years over a tiny population of orangutans(猩猩) in Sumatra have finally concluded that they are a new species to science.‎ The orangutans in question were only reported to exist after an exploration into the remote mountain forests there in 1997. Since then, a research project has taken their biological secret apart. The species has been named the Tapanuli orangutan, a third species in addition to the Bormean and Sumatran.‎ Early on in their study, researchers took DNA from the orangutans, which showed them to be strange compared to other orangutans in Sumatra. So the scientists started a careful survey, reconstructing the animals' evolutionary(进化的) history. The analysis of a total 37 complete orangutan genomes (基因组 shows that these orangutans separated from their Bomean relatives less than 700,000 years ago.‎ For his part in the study, Prof Serge Wich focused on the orangutans' signature calls-- -sounds the male orangutans make to announce their presence. Those calls can carry a kilometer through the forest," Prof Wich explained. If you look at these calls, you can tease them apart, and we found some delicate differences between these and other populations.‎ The final piece of the puzzle, though, was very delicate but consistent differences in the shape of the Sumatran, Bornean and Tapanuli orangutan skulls.‎ It is the first new orangutan to be described for almost a century. But this newly described orangutan is an endangered (濒危的) species. The team pointed out that there are only 800 individuals left.‎ It's very worrying." said Prof Wich, to discover something new and then immediately also realize that we have to focus all of our efforts before we lose it."‎ ‎28. When did people first discover the Tapanuli orangutans?‎ A. About 20 years ago.‎ B. About 70,000 years ago.‎ C. Shortly before Prof Serge Wich's research.‎ D. Before the discovery of the Bomean orangutan.‎ ‎29. At the early stage of the study, researchers focused on the Tapanuli orangutans' ‎ A. calls B. genes c. skulls D. relatives ‎30. What did Prof Wich find about Tapanuli orangutans calls?‎ A. They are the same as the Borncan orangutans' calls.‎ B. They are made by female orangutans.‎ C. They are aimed for self-protection.‎ D. They are quite loud.‎ ‎31. Why does Prof Wich feel worried?‎ A. New discoveries are hard to make.‎ B. The final piece of the puzzle isn't solved.‎ C. The new species is in danger of disappearing.‎ D. The team has lost track of the Tapanuli orangutans.‎ D Generally speaking. there are two kinds of people in our life. I call them takers and givers.‎ Takers have a distinctive signature: They like to get more than they give. They tilt reciprocity(互惠) in their own favor, putting their own interests ahead of others' needs. Takers believe that the world is a competitive,dog-cat-dog place.‎ In the workplace, givers are a relatively rare breed. Whereas takers tend to be self-focused, evaluating what other people can offer them, givers are other-focused, paying more attention to what other people need from them.‎ Outside the workplace, this type of behavior is quite common. But in the workplace, give and take becomes more complicated. Professionally, few of us act purely like givers or takers, adopting a third style instead. We become matchers, trying to preserve an equal balance of giving and getting. Matchers usually think: When they help others, they protect themselves by seeking reciprocity. If you're a matcher, your relationships are governed by even exchanges of favors.‎ Although many people often consider givers to be fools, they turn out to be surprisingly successful.Numerous studies and stories demonstrate that giving can be more powerful- -and less dangerous than most people believe.‎ Research demonstrates that givers may sink to the bottom of the success ladder at first. However, they will achieve the best results in the end. As Chip Conley, the famous entrepreneur who founded Joie de Vivre Hotels, explains, “Being a giver is not good for a 100-yard dash, but it's valuable in a marathon.”‎ ‎ Let me be clear that givers, takers, and matchers all can --- and do --- achieve success. But there's something distinctive that happens when givers succeed. When takers win, there's usually someone else who loses. Research shows that people tend to envy successful takers and look for ways to knock them down. In contrast, when givers win, people are supporting them. As the venture capitalist Randy Komisar remarks, “It's easier to win if everybody wants you to win. If you don't make enemies out there, “it's easier to succeed."‎ ‎32. What do we learn about givers, takers, and matchers?‎ A. Givers are usually competitive.‎ B. Matchers are usually very greedy.‎ C. Takers tum out to be top performers,‎ D. Matchers are most common in the workplace.‎ ‎33. What do matchers most probably believe in?‎ A. Pleasing leaders by struggling.‎ B. Keeping the balance of giving and taking.‎ C. Always being honest.‎ D. Being self-focused.‎ ‎34. In many people's eyes, givers ________.‎ A. are stupid B. are common C. are more likely to win D. can achieve the best results soon ‎35. Which of the following may express the author's attitude toward givers?‎ A. He who laughs last laughs best.‎ B. Where there is a will, there is a way.‎ C. God helps those who help themselves.‎ D, Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填如空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Why Building a Better Future Starts in the Classroom ‎ Social, environmental and economic challenges are always present, no matter what age we're in.
