A former Walmart employee said he was fired from his job after defending himself against an attack in the store’s parking lot. Kristopher Oswald, 30, had been working at a Walmart in Hartland, Michigan, for about seven weeks when the incident occurred. Oswald, who had been working the overnight shift stocking pet supplies, was eating food in his car while on a break, when he suddenly heard the sound of a woman screaming.
He went to investigate, and came across what appeared to be a man pushing a woman up against her car. When Oswald asked the woman if she needed help, the man suddenly attacked him with a series of blows to the head.
Oswald said the man continued beating him while yelling, “I’m going to kill you.” Fighting back, Oswald told Action News he was able to gain the upper hand by holding the man down, but was unexpectedly jumped by two other men. It was then that Livingston County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene and stopped the fighting.
Oswald was quickly fired the following day for breaking company policy “on his lunch break”. It remains unclear which policy Oswald broke, as Walmart’s guidebook does not clearly forbid employees from assisting individuals in clear danger or exercising self-defense in the face of bodily harm.
“We had to make a tough decision, one that we don’t take lightly, and he’s no longer with the company,” a spokeswoman for Walmart said.” The last thing I expected was to not have a
job,” Oswald told WXYZ. “I don’t even know what to put on an application about all this.” Despite the negative outcome, Oswald told the news station he would do it again. “I will always do the right thing,” he said.
25. According to Paragraph 1, we know that .
A. Oswald worked in Walmart for a long time
B. Oswald was working when the incident happened
C. the incident happened in a parking lot
D. the assault happened in the morning
26. Why didn’t Oswald hold the man down finally?
A. Because the man was too strong.
B. Because other people helped the man.
C. Because Sheriff’s deputies came.
D. Because Oswald was too frightened.
27. What does the underlined word “lightly” in the last paragraph mean?
A. responsibly
B. seriously
C. easily
D. carefully
28. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .
A. the spokeswoman for Walmart felt guilty for Oswald
B. Oswald had expected he would lose his job
C. WXYZ tried to help Oswald keep the job
D. Oswald didn’t feel regret about what he had done
C
Trained dogs might just be the proof that they are really man’s best friends not only because they can make fill laundry baskets, but because they can now use washing machines with just a simple bark.
Thanks to the new washing machine—the “Woof to Wash”, a lot of people can benefit from the invention, which enables trained dogs to unlock the machine with a footpad(脚垫) and start it with a simple bark. A doggy footpad and microphone system have been added, which can
recognize a dog’s bark, which means that dogs are able to unlock the machine by pressing the pad with their paw, pull a rope with their mouth to open the machine, and close the machine again with their nose, before starting the washer by barking.
Dr. John Middle is the great inventor. The disabled owners who are blind or have autism problems(孤独症)or learning difficulties, can’t use the present-day washing machines. So he thought there’s a lot of demand for the new washing machines to make things easier. Then he saw a video from the charity Support Dogs, where a dog makes the bed and loads the washing machine. He was completely blown away by the video at that moment. He was inspired that he could invent a machine which the dog could operate. Mr. Middle said, “I’m happy I saw the video. A normal washing machine can be very challenging, so the single program machine is very helpful. But a lot of people also have speech problems, so a voice-activated(声控) machine is handy.”
The Support Dogs charity was set up in 1992. Dogs are trained here using voice commands hand signals, so that they can help their owners fetch post, turn on light switches, open doors, assist in dressing and undressing, as well as do a complete launch cycle. It has trained over 200 dogs to date throughout the country and relies fully on volunteer donations.
We hope the new washing machine can help more people. And we sincerely welcome the sponsorship of any type of business that is kindly willing to help. If you would like to sponsor, please contact us!
29. The “Woof to Wash” machine enables .
A. smart dogs to have a bath by themselves
B. trained dogs to do the washing with a bark
C. untrained dogs to become popular pets at home
D. dogs to be trained in the Support Dogs at home
30. Who would benefit a lot from the new invention?
A. Dogs’ disabled owner.
B. Dog trainers.
C. Famous inventors.
D. The Support Dogs charity.
31. What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?
A. Mr. Middle once got hurt by the dog in the video.
B. Mr. Middle wanted to have a similar dog in the video.
C. Mr. Middle was deeply impressed by the video.
D. Mr. Middle wanted to make the same video.
32. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To help protect animals.
B. To prove dogs useful.
C. To collect suggestions.
D. To attract sponsorship.

April Fool's Day is an odd holiday, and not to everyone's liking. In fact, many people dislike it.
When I was growing up I was mostly indifferent to it. Celebrations such as Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving made perfect sense to me, and I eagerly anticipated them, principally because they involved food. April Fool's Day, on the other hand, was just a date on the calendar. If I thought about it at all, it conjured up visions of fake vomit(呕吐物), and prank phone calls, none of which I was particularly interested in since I was quite serious and gloomy as a child. It was only when I was older, after my early seriousness had collapsed into a ironic (讽刺的) fascination with the comedic aspects of life, that I acquired an interest in the traditions and history of April Fool's Day.
What I have learned about April Fool's Day, after much study, is that most people regard it with as much indifference as I formerly did. Of all the major holidays, it is arguably the least celebrated. Most people, if they show any awareness of the day at all, do so only in a purposeless fashion. For instance, they might remark that "Oh, it's April Fool's Day," when they notice the date to be April 1st. Very few actually do anything to mark the occasion.
But enough people do celebrate it to keep the holiday alive and kicking. In fact, thanks to the Internet, more people probably celebrate April Fool's Day now than ever before. As someone once remarked, "On the Internet, every day is April Fool's Day," and this statement holds especially true when it actually is April Fool's Day on the Internet.
But I'm not really interested in those who love and celebrate the day, because enough ink is spilled on them every year. Instead, I'm interested in those who hate the day, those whose
passive indifference towards the celebration has turned into active hatred and who seek to remove April 1st altogether from the calendar.
I think it's true that to really know something, you need to know its enemies. And just as importantly, because April Fool's Day is all about the freedom to be vulgar(粗俗的), mischievous, deceptive, and offensive for one day of the year, it doesn't help to revise its lighthearted follies that people fondly remember -- in order to get at the real inner meaning of the day. Instead we need to inquire into its bitter antagonisms. Into its heart of darkness, if you will. And so here is my list, by no means definitive, of a few good reasons to hate April Fool's Day.
33. Why is the author keen on other celebrations except April Fool’s Day?
A. For their dates on the calendar.
B. For their supplies of eating.
C. For their popularity around the world.
D. For their perfect theme costumes.
34. What does the underlined sentence “On the Internet, every day is April Fool’s Day” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. People only get to know the April Fool’s Day on the Internet.
B. The celebrating information on the calendar is totally different from the one on the Internet.
C. The celebration of April Fool’s Day on the Internet is becoming more and more popular.
D. People are unwilling to celebrate the holiday in real life.
35. What’s the author’s original attitude to April Fool’s Day during the growing process?
A. Enthusiastic.
B. Optimistic.
C. Concerned.
D. Indifferent.

Weight Loss Myths
Dieting and weight loss is a subject filled with myths, half-truths and inaccuracies. Here are some of the common fallacies(谬论) about losing weight.
Myth 1. 36 : We are all brainwashed into thinking that losing weight or dieting means eating tiny portions. But it’s not true, because some foods contain a lot more calories than others. For example, one small cake can be higher in calories than a whole plateful of chicken, potatoes and vegetables. 37 . However, by choosing foods which are low in calories (and taking regular exercise) we can often lose weight WITHOUT eating less. In fact, sometimes we can actually eat MORE.
Myth 2. We can lose Weight from Specific Parts of Our Body: Nonsense. When we start a weight loss plan, our body burns fat from all available fat stores, not just from particular parts. 38 . if a diet claims to help you lose weight from your waist only, don’t believe it!
Myth 3. Late Night Eating Leads to Weight Gain: Our body metabolizes (代谢)food in the same way, 39 . It's not WHEN you eat that counts---it’s WHAT you eat. So although eating high-calorie foods like cookies, ice cream and cakes in front of the TV can lead to weight gain, this is because of the high-calorie nature of the foods, not because it's late in the evening.
Myth 4. People are Overweight Because They Don’t Exercise: 40 . However, in view of the fact that you need to walk 80 kilometers (50 miles) to lose 1 pound of fat, it’s clear that exercise (or lack of it) does not have a big direct influence on our weight. Over-reliance on exercise alone for weight loss is not a good idea. The single biggest cause of obesity is bad eating habits.
A. whether it’s midday or midnight.
B. Lack of exercise is a contributory factor to a general rise in weight.
C. Losing weight means eating fewer calories than we need
D. One important factor is where we carry our excess weight
E. We cannot control this process
F. Losing Weight Means Eating Small Portions
G. according to our metabolic rate.

第二节 书面表达(满分25分)
Make a Green Living
Nowadays, we are faced with serious environmental problems. As far as I am concerned, it’s high time that we should make a green living. If we don’t , the earth would come to an end.
Firstly, we should take full advantage of water, electricity and so on. Turn off the lights when we leave the classrooms and we can collect rain water to water flowers. Secondly, it is a good idea to classify our rubbish and recycle it in our daily life. Stop littering the rubbish casually or spitting everywhere. Last but not the least, using public transportation or riding bicycles also can make a great difference to the problem.
All in all, it’s everyone’s duty to make a green living. Do take action now before it is too late.
