Earlier this year, my husband and I were presented with the chance to make our home in an urban “micro” space. As we initially considered it, it seemed crazy. Would we even make it a week without going mad? Living room, kitchen, office, dining room, all in one small four-walled space.
There were a number of other potential options. We could move out into the suburbs like most people do in our extraordinarily expensive city and have a small yard maybe even a basement. But there was something about this neat “tiny” home that aroused our interest, which challenged us. We like to live differently from the crowd, to avoid what everyone else is doing “just because” everyone else is.
“Let’s try it for six months. If it makes us crazy, we’ll move. We can do anything for 6 months,” my husband said. It was challenging to squeeze into the space at first, but then
something caught us by surprise. We started having a ton of fun with our tiny space.
In the past, sometimes we had quite different ideas about which art or decorating style we found appealing. But here, in this tiny space, we found ourselves having a ton of fun exploring possible options. There’s no room for clutter(凌乱的东西), either. This is a gift!
It’s been 8 months, and we’re staying. Perhaps forever. When a space is this small, you don’t need to spend much in furnishing it, and you can’t keep endlessly buying things. There’s nowhere to put them!
This leaves us more financial resources and more time to go out into the much bigger world and enjoy life. For us, living in a “tiny” home has filled us with a feeling of abundance. It’s so much better than feeling weighed down, paying for a big space and more and more things. I highly recommend it.
24. What can we learn from the words of the author’s husband?
A. He didn’t like to stay in the small space.
B. He made up his mind to stay in the small space.
C. He encouraged the author to live in the small space.
D. He was uncertain about living in the small space.
25. What do we know about the author’s experience from the text?
A. It was depressing but inspiring.
B. It was disappointing but touching.
C. It was challenging but interesting.
D. It was embarrassing but rewarding.
26. What’s the main advantage of living in the small room to the author?
A. She could clean the room easily. B. She could avoid the crowds.
C. She could enjoy life more. D. She could enjoy a feeling of freedom.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. A new trend of living B. Make good use of space
C. Save space, save money D. The joy of living “tiny”
C
The stories we share with one another are important. They show wisdom and provide inspiration. They are important to our development. But sometimes people choose not to tell.
Consider the negative effects of not sharing a story in the news: People are wondering if public health officials are holding back too much information about the recent outbreak of Ebola.
There is a danger in holding back stories that ought to be told. Bobette Buster said it was like this, “The fact is, history has shown us that stories not told can become like a dangerous genie (妖怪) left in a bottle. When they are finally uncorked , their power to destroy is set free.”
There are a number of reasons why we hide parts of our story: they often show our weaknesses or expose our disadvantages; they require courage and strength to share, and of course, there are some stories that should be kept secret—especially those that embarrass someone else.
Most of us have two selves: the one we display on the outside and the one we actually are on the inside. And the better we get at hiding the stories that show our true selves, the more damage we may be causing to ourselves and to others.
Honesty and openness is important. It proves we are trustworthy. It displays we are human. We are not perfect or better. It highlights the importance of hard work and personal development. Hard work may not allow us to overcome our disadvantages completely. But with hard work, we do not have to be restricted to our mistakes.
Does this mean we admit every weakness, every disadvantage, and every secret regret to everybody we meet? No, of course not. There is a time and a place and a certain level of relationship necessary for some stories to be told in an appropriate manner.
28. What’s the function of the example in Paragraph 2?
A. It reflects that people are concerned about the spread of Ebola.
B. It proves not sharing a story can cause trouble.
C. It concludes that one should share a story at a proper time.
D. It shows the bad effect caused by sharing a story.
29. One of the reasons why people are unwilling to share experiences is that _______.
A. people sometimes have no courage to share their stories
B. story-sharing highlights the importance of hard work
C. people are used to exposing their weaknesses
D. some stories make people feel sad
30. Which is close in meaning to the underlined word “uncorked” in Paragraph 3?
A. unfolded B. freed C. broken D. untouched
31. The writer aims to convince us to _______.
A. realize the importance of being honest when making friends
B. be open to people close to you by sharing some secrets
C. remove the dangers that can be caused by untold stories
D. share stories appropriately for the good of others and ourselves
D
From talking robots and video phones to rovers on Mars, technology has become so advanced that the previously impossible seems to occur on a daily basis. And yet – we still have no cure for the common cold.
Why can’t we stop the common cold? According to Peter Barlow, a scientist at Edinburgh
Napier University in the UK, the main challenge lies in the many different types of cold viruses that are produced by the rhinoviruses (鼻病毒). There are at least 160 types. They mutate (突变) so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs, or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words, a single cure isn’t likely to work on every type of cold.
However, researchers from Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, have found a possible answer. They discovered a protein that the viruses need. Without it, they can’t spread inside your body.
To identify the gene which produces the specific protein needed by the viruses, researchers used a gene-editing technique to test all genes in the human genome (基因组) one by one for thousands of cells. These modified (改变的) cells were then exposed to a range of enteroviruses(肠病毒), including the rhinoviruses which cause the common cold. All the viruses were unable to replicate (复制) inside cells without a gene that produces a specific protein, called methyltransferase SETD3.
Then, they tested genetically modified mice, which were completely unable to produce the protein. The mice were able to live healthy, normal lives without the protein. “Lacking that gene protected the mice completely from viral infection.” associate professor Jan Carette, from Stanford, told the BBC. “These mice would always die, but they survived and we saw a very strong reduction in viral replication and very strong protection.”
Carette said the plan is to find a drug which can temporarily suppress (抑制) the protein, instead of producing genetically modified humans. “We have identified a fantastic target that all
enteroviruses and rhinoviruses require and depend on. Take that away and the virus really has no chance.” said Carette. “This is a really good first step – the second step is to have a chemical that mimics (模拟) this genetic deletion.” he added.
32. What does Peter Barlow think is the main problem for prevention of the common cold?
A. The slow mutation of some genes.
B. The fast speed at which rhinoviruses spread.
C. The wide variety of cold viruses created by rhinoviruses.
D. The harm rhinoviruses do to the immune system.
33. What can we learn about the protein needed by the viruses?
A. It allows the viruses to mutate easily.
B. It helps the viruses replicate inside our bodies.
C. It helps the viruses become resistant to drugs.
D.It accelerates the speed at which the viruses spread.
34. What did the researchers discover in their gene-editing study?
A. The modified cells seemed to protect the mice against viral infections.
B. Genetically modified mice died because they lacked the protein.
C. More methyltransferase SETD3 was produced after the cells were modified.
D. The gene-editing technique was more effective against enteroviruses than rhinoviruses.
35.What do the researchers most probably do next, according to Carette?
A. Conduct experiments on genetically modified humans.
B. Apply this gene-editing technique to control other viruses.
C. Identify a drug that can help reduce the protein.
D. Find a chemical that can cure all enteroviruses and rhinoviruses.

No matter how hard you work to keep your customers satisfied, you’re bound to come up against one or two who have a negative experience with your product or service. 36 However, it’s your job to address the customer’s concerns and give them a reason to come back to your brand. Below are the techniques that have worked in calming any angry customer.
37 It may seem like common sense for companies to respond as soon as possible, if not
immediately, to an upset customer. The longer that customer has to wait, the angrier they’ll get and the more likely they are to write a bad review. A quick acknowledgement and show of concern will go a long way.
Just listen. Active listening is an essential skill in managing a team. It’s just as important for providing good customer service—especially when someone is upset. 38 Then let them know you understand and sympathize with their disappointment.
Remain calm and ask them what they want to happen. If the No.1 rule of customer service is that the customer is always right, the second rule is to remain calm. Even in the face of angry customers, keeping a level head will have a naturally calming effect on them.
Give them the time to explain exactly what they’re upset about. 39 Sometimes a little compromise might be needed on their part depending upon that solution.
Get on the phone. In today’s period of social media, customers feel very comfortable airing their frustrations from behind a keyboard. 40 Most of the time if you call and explain your side—and listen to theirs— you can work things out.
A. Give them time to express their concerns.
B. Respond immediately.
C. It may not necessarily be your fault.
D. You might as well ask them questions, too.
E. Putting yourself in their shoes can solve problems quickly.
F. Ask what they feel is an appropriate solution and do your best to make that happen.
G. It is recommended that reaching out to them personally on the phone resolve the issue.

Graduation finally came. My classmates and I decided to do something. After a heating discussion, we agreed on making the video to record our experiences at school.
Material collecting takes us a whole week, during that time we interviewed our teachers and took pictures of every aspect of school life. The editing part before that was tough. They debated over what to put into the video. Some compromises were unavoidable, but the video proved

Possible Version
Dear friends,
Our school produces a lot of rubbish every day, such as leftover food, waste paper and plastic bottles, which brings a wide range of environmental problems as well as the waste of resources. Therefore, it's time we took immediate action to change the situation.
To start with, it is vital for us to raise awareness of environmental protection and develop the good habit of garbage sorting. Furthermore, we are bound to voluntarily differentiate recyclable rubbish from non-recyclables in our daily life. Meanwhile, the concept of resources saving should be established among us. Only when we attach great importance to our actual action can our campus be more beautiful.
Let’s make our joint efforts to classify garbage and protect the environment. I do believe that our school will be more harmonious, and we, as individuals, embrace more promising future.
