"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."
-Aesop
Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day. It's a day set aside to show extra kindness to the people around us-those we know and those we don't. Smiling and saying a few encouraging words is easy. But an act of kindness is something you actually do. A random act of kindness is usually unexpected and unplanned. Maybe you help someone carry groceries. Maybe you pay for a stranger's coffee. Or maybe send an encouraging note to a friend.
Caring for others is nothing new. In fact, the Bible tells everyone to "Love your neighbor as yourself." But who is your neighbor? There is an example in the story of "The Good Samaritan".
It tells of a traveler who was robbed and beaten. A religious leader saw the man lying in the road but didn't stop to help. Another religious man also ignored him. But a Samaritan came along. He was a foreigner. He showed compassion and took care of the strangers' needs. He showed mercy.
Is helping strangers a thing of the past? Are people today too busy or too afraid to help someone they don't know? I know from experience that goodwill between strangers still exists.
One Sunday morning I was running late for church. As I started to drive off, I noticed an elderly lady. She was dragging a large piece of wood out of the rain. I was in a hurry, but I hesitated. Then I stopped my car, got out and helped her move the wood.
Months went by. Then one day, I saw some workmen cleaning out an old store. There in the pile of trash was a large Coca-cola cooler. How fun! A worker said I could have it, so I picked it up and started home. I didn't get very far. It was much heavier than I thought. Then out of the blue, the
- 12 -
elderly lady appeared with a cart! I had helped her, and she was returning the favor. Go and help your neighbor today!
21. Which of the following is NOT a random act of kindness?

C. Paying for a stranger's breakfast.
D. Sending an encouraging note to a friend.
22. What does the underlined phrase "out of the blue" in the last paragraph mean?
A. Happily B. Fortunately C. Surprisingly D. Excitedly
23. How does the author show that kindness between strangers still exists?
A. By making a comparison. B. By giving an example.
C. By explaining reasons. D. By stating opinions.
24. Which can be the best title of the passage xkw?
A. Love Your Neighbors B. Random Acts of kindness
C. Random Kindness Pays Off D. It's Never Too Late to Help Others

One of the benefits of technology has been 56 increase in the means available for people to stay in touch. While families once had to wait weeks, sometimes months, for letters 57 (arrive), contact is now available from almost any part of the world at any time. This not only 58 (allow) more opportunities to feel included, connected, and involved but also 59 (many) chances to give and provide support, assess others' needs, determine their states of mind, and work to resolve conflicts.
60 , availability for contact isn't always a good thing. For example, it used to be that estrangements(疏远)between parents and their adult children were done far more 61 (private). Prior to the 62 (exist) of social media or the rapid transmission of the Internet, one could be estranged from a child or parent, and the only people 63 would hear about it might be whomever the parents wanted to tell and the close circle of confidants(知己)of the estranged adult child. For all the sufferings 64 (cause) by an estrangement, it could mean a fairly clean break, however painful, for both the parent and the child. People would cut off contact and perhaps never 65 (hear) from again, unless or until they make up or give in to each other.

I was sitting in a taxi, wondering if I had overdressed for the evening, when I looked out of the window and saw Mother rooting through(翻找)a dustbin. It was just after dark in March. I was stuck in traffic two blocks from the party where I was heading.
Mother stood fifteen feet away. She had tied rags around her shoulders to keep out the spring cold and was rooting through the trash. Her eyes widened with childish joy when she found something she liked. She looked like any of the thousands of homeless people in New York City. It had been months since I laid eyes on Mother, and when she looked up, I was afraid that she would see me and call out my name, and that someone on the way to the same party would see us together and that my secret would be out.
I slid down in the seat and asked the driver to turn around and take me home. The taxi stopped in front of my building, the doorman held the door for me, and the elevator man took me up to my floor. The apartment was silent except for the click of my heels on the polished wood floor. I felt ashamed when I saw Mother rooting happily through the dustbin. I looked around the room. I'd tried to turn it into the sort of place where the person I wanted to be would live. But I could never enjoy it because I worried about my parents on a sidewalk or somewhere else. I was ashamed of myself for wearing pearls and living on Park Avenue while they were busy keeping warm and finding something to eat. I hated myself-hated my clothes and my apartment.
What could I do? I'd tried to help them countless times, but they would insist they didn't need my help. They said that they were living the way they wanted to. And I just accepted who they were.
