Certain animals and plants develop characteristics that help them cope with their environment
better than others of their kind. This natural biological process is called adaptation. Among the
superior characteristics developed through adaptation are those that may help in getting food or
shelter, in providing protection, and in producing and protecting the young. That results in the
evolution of more and more organisms (生物 ) that are better fitted to their environments.
Each living thing is adapted to its way of life in a general way, but each is adapted especially
to its own distinct class. A plant, for example, depends upon its roots to fix itself firmly and to
absorb water and inorganic chemicals. It depends upon its green leaves for using the sun's energy
to make food from inorganic chemicals. These are general adaptations, common to most plants. In
addition, there are special adaptations that only certain kinds of plants have.
Many animals have adaptations that help them escape from their enemies. Some insects are
hidden by their body color or shape, and many look like a leaf or a little branch. The coats of some
animals are colored to mix with the surroundings. Many animals have the ability to remain
completely still when an enemy is near.
Organisms have a great variety of ways of adapting. They may adapt in their structure,
function, and genetics; in their development and production of the young; and in other aspects. An
organism may create its own environment, as do warm-blooded animals, which have the ability to
adjust body heat exactly to keep their most suitable temperature however weather changes.
Usually adaptations are an advantage, but sometimes an organism is so well adapted to a particular
environment that, if conditions change, ______________ to readapt to the new conditions.

第一节:阅读表达(共 5 小题;每小题 3 分,满分 15 分)
阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题。(请注意问题后的字数要求)
You seem to be a Wet Blanket (a person who doesn`t enjoy himself /herself and thus prevents
others from enjoying themselves) when it comes to nature and your kid. You are most likely a
caring, protective parent who wants to keep your child safe and sound. You may be so determined
to protect your kid from dirt, sunburn, frostbite, or scratches that you try to avoid the outdoors. Or
you may just find muddy clothes and sandy toes require too much extra work. Perhaps you hate to
get dirty yourself. The natural world may just make you nervous and you might worry those bugs
and bats will suck you dry. It may be that you just never got the chance to be outdoors when you
were a kid and now know nothing about what to do with your kid.
While it is every care-giver`s job to protect their kid, your worries may cause your child to grow
up as a Wet Blanket as well. If you prefer the indoors yourself, you may be keeping your kid from
outdoor experiences without even realizing it. Your attitudes about nature has a huge influence on
how comfortable your kid will feel outside. You may need to go against your own nature and
“ open the door ” to get your kid outside!
You may already see the value in helping kids spend time outside in nature and know that playing
in natural settings helps children grow up mentally. Perhaps you already introduce your child to
nature through books, museums, and zoos. Maybe you just need some ideas of what to do with
kids outside. Try some simple nature activities with your kid or sign-up for professionally-led
nature programs to develop your skills. While it may be a challenge for you to overcome your own
nervousness about nature, you can raise a child who ____.
第 4 页 共 26 页
One of the easiest was you can get your kid outside is to become a Door Opener. Even if you
don`t enjoy playing in the mud you can take breath and let them loose! Undirected time to explore
nature is an important part of raising a caring kid. This might be free time in the backyard,
allowing him to wander ahead on a walk or simply providing her with materials for a project.
Putting aside your own nervousness and providing “ in-the-wings ” support will enrich your child`s
journey as a nature lover! Belt out a song, build a snowman, watch the clouds, or plant a seed with
your child. Help your child connect his creative side with nature.
76. What is the best title of the passage? 9Please answer within 10 words.)

Make the benefits most, reduce the drawbacks least
Hosting the Olympics successfully is, perhaps, the greatest glory for a city. However, before
transforming the dream into reality, the benefits and drawbacks of hosting the Olympics should be
considered carefully.
Hosting the Olympics surely would bring about much gain to a city. Boom of the local
economy, more jobs, and the possibility of generating income all sound extremely attractive to the
municipal government. At the same time, better infrastructure( 基础设施 ), cleaner environment,
enjoying the wonderful game with hundreds of sports elites( 精英 )and entertainment stars, and the
opportunity of contacting people from all over the world also seem exciting to the citizens.
Besides, the hosting will definitely promote the patriotic emotion and pride, as well as the moral
behavior in local people. In most cases, hosting the Olympics is well supported by both the public
and the central government.
But this is not the entire view of the pretty picture. If we look from another angle, the
Olympic hosting might bring about some side-effects to a city.
First, the environmental impacts, including the increasing exhaust smoke of cars, more
pressure on water resources, huge amount of wasted leaflets and other materials used for public
activities, are most probably neglected. In order to broaden the streets, some trees may have to be

A new set of brain images shows why : Reading the Roman alphabets and Chinese characters
uses different parts of the brain.
The results also suggest that Chinese schoolchildren have reading problems in a different part
of the brain used in reading alphabet-based languages. This shows that the learning disorder
dyslexia ( inability to read properly) is not the same in very culture and does not have a universal
biological cause.
Scientists described the results as “ very important and revolutionary ” . While dyslexia has
certain common roots, they said, they now have some proof that this kind of functional problem
works differently according to the different demands that Western and Eastern languages place on
the brain.
Dyslexia is a common developmental disorder in which people of normal intelligence have
difficulty learning to read, spell and master other language skills.
The results suggest that treating dyslexia around the world probably will require different
treatments.
“ Reading is complex, ” said Guinevere Eden, Georgetown University professor. “ This shows
we need to be more open-minded about diverse treatment approaches. ”
Its origins are complex. There appears to be a genetic aspect to the illness. It also may result

Earlier brain scans show that English- reading dyslexics don ’ t function properly in a left part of
the brain associated with the awareness of 44 sounds from the English alphabet. However,
according to the new study, reading Chinese uses some different parts of the brain located in the
left-front of the brain. It is associated with symbol interpretation. Unlike alphabet letters, Chinese
characters represent entire thoughts and physical objects.

Each spring brings a new blossom of wildflowers in the ditches ( 路沟 ) along the highway I
travel daily to work.
There is one particular blue flower that has always caught my eye. I've noticed that it blooms
only in the morning hours, the afternoon sun is too warm for it. Every day for approximately two
weeks, I see those beautiful flowers.
This spring, I started a wildflower garden in our yard. I can look out of the kitchen window
while doing the dishes and see the flowers. I've often thought that those lovely blue flowers from
the ditch would look great in that bed alongside other wildflowers.
Everyday I drove past the flowers thinking, “ I ’ ll stop on my way home and dig them. ” “ Gee,
I don ’ t want to get my good clothes dirty... ” Whatever the reason, I never stopped to dig them. My
husband even gave me a folding shovel( 钎 ) one year to be used for that expressed purpose.
One day on my way home from work, I was saddened to see that the highway department had
mowed the ditches and the pretty blue flowers were gone. I thought to myself, “ Way to go, you
waited too long. You should have done it when you first saw them blooming this spring. ”
A week ago we that my oldest sister-in-law has a terminal brain tumor( 脑瘤晚

haven ’ t been as close as we all would have liked.
I couldn ’ t help but see the connection between the pretty blue flowers and the relationship

between my husband's sister and us. I do believe that God has given us some time left to plant
some wonderful memories that will bloom every year for us.
And yes, if I see the blue flowers again, you can bet I ’ ll stop and transplant them to my
wildflower garden.

The NBA has a new rule this season .It ’ s called “ zero tolerance. ” NBA referees (裁判) are
not letting players complain too long or too loudly about a ref ’ s call. A player who does can be
given a technical foul (犯规) . Two technical fouls and the player is out of the game.
The players don’ t like the new rule and want the NBA to change it. They think it ’ s only
natural to get upset during a close ,hard— fought game if a call goes against you.
But I lik e the “ zero — tolerance ” rule and wish other sports would follow the NBA ’ s example.
Wouldn ’ t it be more enjoyable if players stopped arguing the calls and just played the game?
The biggest reason I like the new rule is that it sets a good example for younger athletes.
When kids (and coaches and parents) see professionals such as Rasheed Wallace of the Detroit
Pistons yelling at the refs and arguing every call ,they think it ’ s okay to do the same. They think
it ’ s part of the game.
But yelling at refs and arguing calls should neve r be part of any kids ’ games. Kids should be
taught to forget about the ref ’ s calls and concentrate on improving their skills and playing their
best .
Secondly ,all athletes need to learn that you control only one thing in a game ,and that ’ s your
own perf ormance .You can ’ t control what the other players or coaches do . And you certainly can ’ t
control the calls the referees make.
Finally ,everyone, from NBA all— stars to 8—year—olds ,should remember that being a
basketball referee is a tough job. The ref has to make dozens of split —second(即时的) calls. No
hesitation. No second chances. Not even the best referee gets every call right.

People who drink a little, exercise, quit smoking and eat five servings of fruit and vegetables
each day live on average 14 years longer than people who adopt none of these behaviors,
researchers said on Tuesday . A collection of evidence has shown that these things contribute to
healthier and longer lives, but the new study actually qualified their mixed effect, the British team
said.
“These results may provide further support for the idea that even small differences in
lifestyle may make a big difference to health, ” the researchers wrote in the journal PLOS
Medicine.
Between 1993 and 1997 the researchers questioned 20,000 healthy British men and woman
about their lifestyles. They also tested every participant ’ s blood to measure vitamin C intake. an
indicator (指标) of how much fruit and vegetables people ate.
Then they assigned the participants-aged 45-79 a score of between 0 and 4 ,giving one point
for each of the healthy behaviors. After allowing for age and other factors that could affect the
likelihood of dying. the researchers found people with a score of 0 four times as likely to die.

If you are worried about things and are under a lot of stress at work or school, then you are
probably not sleeping well. Worry can keep you awake, tossing and turning in bed until the early
hours of the morning when you eventually fall asleep. When you wake up, you don’ t feel
refreshed, but tired and worn out and unable to face a new day.
Dr. Henry Winkle, in a recent newspaper article entitled Stress and Sleep, indicates that
_________ . Dr. Winkle says, “ The more we worry, the less we sleep, the more we are unable to
deal with stress. If we can find a way to get a good night ’ s sleep, ” he adds, “ we can often find the
energy to deal wi th what ’ s worrying us ”.
So, what is a good night ’ s sleep? Research shows that the amount of sleep which people need
in order to keep healthy varies a lot. Seven hours in about the average amount, though strangely
enough, sleeping longer often gives you a headache instead of making you feel more refreshed.
第 18 页 共 26 页
Dr. Winkle believes that preparing for sleeping is important. People who work late should try
to give themselves a short break and do something restful before going to bed. This could be
watching TV or listening to music. Doing some exercise earlier in the day should help you to feel
physically as well as mentally tired. A bedtime drink can also help, but coffee or tea should be
avoided as they contain caffeine and will keep you awake. “ When you put the light out, ” Dr.
Winkle says, “ concentrate on relaxing your muscles, working slowly up from your feet, and you ’ ll
be asleep before you know it. ”

There ’ s a lot of discussion these days about fit kids. Being fit is a way of saying a person eats
well, gets a lot of physical activity (exercise), and has a healthy weight. If you ’ re fit, your body
works well, feels good, and can do all the things you want to do.
Here are four rules to live by, if you ’ re a kid who wants to be fit.
1. Eat a variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables.
You may have a favorite food, but the best choice is to eat a variety. If you eat different
foods, you ’ re more likely to get the nutrients your body needs. Taste new foods and old ones you
haven ’ t tried for a while.
2. Drink water and milk most often.
When you ’ re really thirsty, cold water is the No. 1 thirst-quencher. And there ’ s a reason your
school cafeteria offers cartons of milk. Kids need calcium to grow strong bones, and milk is a
great source of this mineral.
3. Listen to your body.
What does it feel like to be full? When you ’ re eating, notice how your body feels and when
your stomach feels comfortably full. Sometimes, people eat too muc h because they don ’ t notice

when they need to stop eating. Eating too much can make you feel uncomfortable, and over a
period of time, it can lead to ___________________.
4. Be active.
One job you have as a kid- and it ’ s a fun one-is that you get to figure out which activities you
like best. Not everyone loves baseball or soccer. Maybe your passion is karate, or kickball, or
dancing. Ask your parents to help you do your favorite activities regularly. Find ways to be active
every day.

London has more than nine million visitors every year. They come and visit some of the most
famous places in England:Big Ben, the Tower of London and the River Thames.
You can see some of the most interesting places in the city by getting on one of London's tour
buses. It has an open roof and let you off at any places you want to visit.
The River Thames is London ’ s main waterway. It has shaped the capital ’ s landscape,
history and geography. So one of the best ways of making sense of the city is to take a trip along
the river. Much of the riverbank can now be walked along, particularly the south bank.
The clock tower of the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, has become one of the main symbols
of London. It rises up nearly 100 m to a golden point above the clock and a 13-ton bell. The sound
of the bell, which you can hear at the beginning of many television and radio programmes, has
become well-known throughout the nation. No visit to London is complete without a look at the
Tower of London, in the eastern part of the city. After Big Ben, the Tower may be London's most
visited tourist spot.
Sightseeing in London is great, but . So, the best way to start the day is to fill up on an
English breakfast. For starters, have an egg, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, black
pudding and fried bred. Then finish off with toast and jam, and a large pot of tea. You can buy an
English breakfast in nearly every hotel, and at many restaurants and cafes.
An English pub is a good place to stop for lunch and a drink :You can get hot or cold food
and try one of England's beers. Or you can sit outside one of the many roadside pubs and cafes in
London, and simply watch the busy world go by.
