Recently, the Institute of International Education (IIE) released a report, showing
that the number of Americans studying abroad increased by 2.3 percent from the
school year before.
Peggy Blumenthal. an advisor with the IE. notes that educators have long seen the
value in international student exchanges. She says that most Americans do not travel
far from home to attend a college or university. For that reason, they are not often put
in situations that are unfamiliar. A study abroad program can teach students
independence and important life skills. Realizing that not everybody sees the world
the way Americans do. more companies want employees who speak foreign languages
and know how 10 deal with people from other cultures.
Many U.S. colleges and universities have increased partnerships with foreign
institutions and companies. They also have added more short- term international study
programs which are usually operated by the American schools. They make it easier
for students to find the finances to study abroad. The U. S. government also has
expanded financial assistance for international study through its Benjamin A. Gilman
and Fulbright programs. And foreign institutions are increasing efforts to match their
study programs with American ones. For example, last November, France announced
a plan to get more of the country's top institutions 1o offer programs in English.

non-white students make up 42 percent of all college students in the U.S. , only 29
percent of students studying abroad were non-white, mainly because of lack of

possibility for them.

At the Vdara Hotel and Spa in Las Vegas, robots are at the front line of room
service. “Jett ” and “Fetch ” are designed to look like dogs, each about three feet high.
They can bring items from the hotel's cafe right to guest rooms. Among their many
abilities they can travel alone across the hall, remotely call for a elevator, and even
inform guests when they first arrive at the hotel through a phone message.
It's not just Vdara that's experimenting with this technology. Other Las Vegas hotels,
including the Renaissance Las Vegas, are using automation to cater to customers'
needs. So too is the Mandarin Oriental. And at bars like the Tipsy Robot, it's the

Spatial Economic Analysis found that two-thirds of all jobs in Las Vegas will most
likely be automated by 2035. At the Vdara, Jett and Fetch play a small part of a bigger
plan. Cliff Atkinson, manager of the Vdara, says automation can help transform the
industry as many guests demand more of a customized (定制的 ) experience.
"I see it as we remove front desks altogether and that you're able to check in over
your phone," Atkinson says. “ But the receptionists that were at those front desks are
still there. They ’re there to customize your journey, there to greet you at the car and
they're there to guide you to your room to make sure you have everything you need.
You can't replace that and that bond. ”
Atkinson sees technology as a chance to retrain employees. Goodbye front desk
agent, hello “lobby ambassador ”.

A. Hotels. B. Robots. C. Gests. D. Elevators.
33. What do bars in Las Vegas use robots to do?
A. Inform customers. B. Do experiments. C. Greet guests. D. Make drinks.
34. According to Atkinson, how does automation help the industry?
A. It changes 300,000 people's life.
B. It satisfies customers" needs better.
C. It makes all jobs in Las Vegas easier.
D. It cuts down the expense of the industry.
35. What can we infer from Paragraph 5?
