It was the first day of spring here but it didn't feel like it. The COVID-19 epidemic (流行病)was sweeping the globe and everywhere there were feelings of fear and loneliness. "Social Distancing" had become the new norm. Here the schools had been closed, the restaurant dining rooms had been shut, and people had been told to work from home whenever they could. Even the sheltered workshop where my oldest son worked had been closed until further notice. People had made a run on the stores and large areas of the shelves were bare. On the news the numbers of the sick and dead continued to rise. It felt like there was a weight on the souls of everyone in the world.
My family were staying at home as much as possible and as I looked out of my window I wondered how long this crisis would last. It was then, however, that I saw something that lifted that weight off of my soul, made me smile, and made my heart feel happy again. On the street below my
house there was an old friend of mine from high school who was a teacher there. With him was my younger son's former aide from the high school as well. They were delivering the school lunches door to door to the hungry children who were stuck at home. Watching them made me think of something everyone's childhood television neighbor, Mr. Roger's once said: "In the bad times, always look for the helpers."
I have no doubt that this crisis will pass as all the crisis before. But it is our choice on whether it brings out the best in us or the worst in us. Let it bring out the best in you. Use it to strengthen your faith. Use it to free yourself from fear. Use it to grow kinder, more giving, and more loving. Become a helper to all those in need and you will be a happy person today and in all the days to come.

A. We are supposed to help each other in bad times.
B. In good times we needn't do much to help others.
C. We should ask more people to help us in bad times.
D. It's not necessary for us to find helpers in bad times.
C
I came home raging with anger. Once again I had been asked to do "just one more thing". My boss was leaving the company and the president wanted to know if I was interested in taking over the office. The opportunity sounded great-except that I would have no additional help, would receive
minimal compensation(补偿)and would be left in a position at a company that had no chance of being promoted. My poor husband asked what I wanted to do. At first I considered our financial responsibilities. Then I realized I could not take the job; I was not going to settle for a partially rewarding life. I believed my husband and I could make it work.
After giving it much thought, I finally decided to study one of my personal passions: architecture. The only accredited(合格的)schools were located across the state, so for the first semester, I drove three hours each way twice a week. The stress at home and the struggles in school began taking a physical toll on me. At the end of the first semester I was ready to quit, but I knew this was my chance. So I found a relative who lived halfway between home and school and she offered me a place to stay during the week.
In my personal life, I discovered that many of the women in my family were supportive because they did not follow their own desired study paths. My grandmother never went to college because she became a mother, and my mother only went for a shorter degree because she chose to start a family as well. My husband's family were disappointed that my schooling would push any decision to have grandchildren into our 30s, but my husband was supportive and never apologized for my choice.
I will finish my master's degree in December. Instead of dreading work, I get up each day excited about moving forward. I know there will be days when I still don't want to get out of bed so early, but I am proud of what I am doing and am so glad I decided to take a chance on my future.
28. Which of the following words can be used to describe the president?
A. Greedy. B. Generous. C. Hardworking. D. Sympathetic.
29. What do we know about a lot of women in the author's family?
A. They did a good job in keeping the family.
B. They gave up studying further in their life.
C. They offered no support to the author in her study.
D. They made their own dreams about jobs come true.
30. Why is the author excited every day?
A. She is hopeful about the future. B. She will get a pay rise.
C. She has finished her master's degree. D. She doesn't have to get up early.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. Why we should work hard at school. B. What the author's family life is like now.
C. The author's family's attitude to her study. D. How the author makes a change in her life.
D
Protected areas around the world are protected from invasive species(入侵物种). However, most of them are still vulnerable(易受伤害的)to invasion, according to a research conducted by scientists from China and the UK.
The study, led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was published in the journal Nature Communications. It showed how the majority of protected areas are no more than 10 kilometers away from an area with the presence of invasive species. Tim Blackburn, a co-author of the study and a professor from University College London, said that introducing invasive species is among the worst damage that humans can inflict to the natural environment.
Invasive alien species or IAS can harm an ecosystem by competing with or killing native species and destroying habitats, among many impacts. Aliens are species that are not naturally occurring in a particular area and are introduced through humans. Invasion by such species is considered as among the five worst direct drivers of biodiversity loss worldwide. Aliens establish populations at more new areas at an ever-increasing pace.
The researchers discovered that lower than ten percent of protected areas have the 894 surveyed invasive species within them, which suggests that, in general, protected areas are effectively shielded against invasion. However, all of them are still at risk from IAS, because at least one alien species was found within 100 kilometers of 99% of the surveyed protected areas' boundaries.
The research team also discovered that protected regions that contain more invasive animal species experience a more significant influence or presence of humans, otherwise known as the human footprint index. This is caused by factors like large human populations and transport links.
In addition, protected areas that have been established more recently and are more extensive(广泛的)have a more significant number of IAS. The older protected areas are usually in more remote locations, which provide them with better protection from human impacts.
Dr. Li who is a famous biologist said that for now, the majority of protected areas are free from IAS. Still, it may not be true for long. He adds that those areas which are easily accessible to many people count as the most highly vulnerable.
32. Which word is closest to the underlined word "inflict" in meaning in paragraph 2?
A. Imagine. B. Cause. C. Practise. D. Challenge.
33. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A. Alien species are dangerous to native species and their habitats.
B. Native species are not strong enough to compete with aliens.
C. Alien species have a much stronger appetite than native species.
D. The number of native species increases more slowly than that of alien species.
34. What is also closely related to the alien invasion according to the study?
A. The local weather. B. Human activity.
C. Regional locations. D. Practical measures.
35. What's Dr. Li's attitude towards the future of protected areas?
A. Positive. B. Subjective. C. Uncaring. D. Worried.
