Even my younger sister had got rid of them much earlier than me. But as I began to grow older, this changed.‎ All this happened on the Bike Safety Day. It is supposed to be a fun day at school when all of us kids bring our bikes to school and the school provides us with the opportunity to ride outside and learn proper bike safety. Sounds like fun, right? No. In fact, it caused me to panic. What was I going to say when my friends asked me about my training wheels?‎ With the pressure of everyone seeing my training wheels, I determined to let them go. This was the first big change I’d ever made on my own.‎ I went to my parents and told them all about my dilemma. They were more than happy to help. We went outside and got my bike. Instead of running away and hiding behind, I stood in front of my bike and took great pride in my decision as my dad removed the training wheels.‎ I got on and steadied myself. My heart raced but my feet and hands were calm. My dad started ‎ to push before my feet even moved and suddenly I was off. The fear faded away and a relaxed mind came into its place. It was crazy to think how quickly I learned something that took so long for me to even try!‎ My confidence soared(猛涨).This was going to be the start of a brand new world for me. My accomplishment would carry me forth to new goals and wins. I realized that if I set my mind to something, I could achieve it.‎ 24. What happened when the author finally rode without the training wheels?‎ A. She felt extremely embarrassed. ‎ B. Everything turned out to be easy.‎ C. She ended up flat on the ground. ‎ D. Her sisters followed her example.‎ ‎27. What does the author think is necessary for her to achieve a goal?‎ A. Patience. B. Determination. ‎ C. Pressure. D. Concentration.‎ ‎ C ‎ Life in the Clear ‎ Transparent animals let light pass through their bodies the same way light passes through a window. These animals typically live between the surface of the ocean and a depth of about 3,300 feet—as far as most light can reach. Most of them are extremely delicate and can be damaged by a simple touch. Sonke Johnsen, a scientist in biology, says, “These animals live through their life alone. They never touch anything unless they’re eating it, or unless something is eating them.”‎ ‎ And they are as clear as glass. How does an animal become see-through? It’s trickier than you might think.‎ ‎ The objects around you are visible because they interact with light. Light typically travels in a straight line. But some materials slow and scatter(散射) light, bouncing it away from its original path. Others absorb light, stopping it dead in its tracks. Both scattering and absorption make an object look different from other objects around it, so you can see it easily.‎ ‎ But a transparent object doesn’t absorb or scatter light, at least not very much, Light can pass through it without bending or stopping. That means a transparent object doesn’t look very different from the surrounding air or water. You don’t see it ----you see the things behind it.‎ ‎ To become transparent, an animal needs to keep its body from absorbing or scattering light. Living materials can stop light because they contain pigments(色素) that absorb specific colors of light. But a transparent animal doesn’t have pigments, so its tissues won’t absorb light. According ‎ to Johnsen, avoiding absorption is actually easy. The real challenge is preventing light from scattering.‎ Animals are built of many different materials----skin, fat, and more----and light moves through each at a different speed. Every time light moves into a material with a new speed, it bends and scatters. Transparent animals use different tricks to fight scattering. Some animals are simply very small or extremely flat. Without much tissue to scatter light, it is easier to be see—through. Others build a large, clear mass of non-living jelly-lie(果冻状的)material and spread themselves over it .‎ Larger transparent animals have the biggest challenge, because they have to make all the different tissues in their bodies slow down light exactly as much as water does. They need to look uniform. But how they’re doing it is still unknown. One thing is clear for these larger animals, staying transparent is an active process. When they die, they turn a non-transparent milky white.‎ ‎28. According to Paragraph 1, transparent animals_______.‎ ‎ A. stay in groups B. can be easily damaged ‎ C. appear only in deep ocean D. are beautiful creatures ‎29. The underlined word “dead” in Paragraph 3 means__________.‎ ‎ A. silently B. gradually C. regularly D. completely ‎30. One way for an animal to become transparent is to ________.‎ ‎ A. change the direction of light travel B. gather materials to scatter light.‎ ‎ C. avoid the absorption of light D. grow bigger to stop light.‎ ‎31. The last paragraph tells us that larger transparent animals________.‎ ‎ A. move more slowly in deep water ‎ B. stay see-through even after death ‎ C. produce more tissues for their survival ‎ D. take effective action to reduce light spreading D Don't let the name fool you : a black hole is anything but empty space. Rather, it is a great amount of matter packed into a very small area-think of a star ten times bigger than the sun squeezed into a ball approximately the diameter (直径) of New York City. The result produces such a strong gravitational field that nothing, not even light, can escape. In recent years, NASA instru-ments have painted a new picture of these strange objects that are, to many, the most fascinating objects in space.‎ The idea of an object in space so massive and dense (密度大的) that light could not escape it has been around for centuries. Most famously, black holes were predicted by Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, which showed that when a massive star dies, the center of the star falls in upon ‎ itself, or falls apart. When this happens, it explodes part of the star into space and leaves behind a small core with its great density. If the core' s mass is more than about three times the mass of the sun, then the force of gravity is greater than all other forces and produces a black hole.‎ Scientists can't directly observe black holes with telescopes that detect (探测) x-rays, light, or other forms of radiation. We can, however, infer the presence of black holes and study them by detecting their influence on other matter nearby. If a black hole passes through a cloud of matter, for example, it will draw matter inside in a process known as addition. A similar process can occur if a normal star passes close to a black hole. In this case, the black hole can tear the star apart as it pulls it towards itself. As the attracted matter accelerates and heats up, it gives off x-rays that radiate into space. Recent discoveries offer some evidence that black holes have a dramatic influence on the neighborhoods around them - giving off powerful gamma ray bursts, swallowing nearby stars, and accelerating the growth of new stars in some areas while postponing it in others.‎ ‎32. Why does a black hole have such a powerful gravity?‎ A. Its area is small. B. It is empty space.‎ C. Its density is great. D. It contains much light.‎ ‎33. How many stages are there from a massive star to a black hole?‎ A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.‎ ‎34. How do scientists research black holes?‎ A. By studying matter nearby them. B. By observing them with telescopes.‎ C. By collecting some light from them. D. By receiving powerful gamma ray bursts.‎ ‎35. What can be a suitable title for the text?‎ A. The Birth of a Black Hole B. The First Picture of a Black Hole C. Some Unknown Secrets of Black Holes D.
