Bobby White works as a police officer in Gainesville, Florida. On January 15,he was told to investigate a noise complaint.A group of young men were playing basketball in the street.Instead of lecturing the boys or sending them home,White joined in on the game.
He said:"Can you believe someone's calling to complain about kids playing basketball in the street—can you believe that?"
White started shooting baskets with the kids. And a few minutes later, some more boys joined the game.Later, the police officer and the kids lowered the basketball hoop(篮筐)and were having a "slam-dunk" contest. The camera on White's police car recorded the event. The police department posted the video on Facebook. It was seen over 15 million times.
Before he left the boys,White said he would come back again "with back-up." That generally is what police officers say when they are requesting help from other officers.
As the video spread,a former basketball star became interested in what happened in Gainesville. That player was Shaquille O'Neal. He was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers when they won the National Basketball Association championship. He also played for the Orlando Magic,a team not too far from Gainesville.
The other day,O'Neal visited the Gainesville police and spoke with White. And then they went out to "the scene". That is what police officers call the area where a crime happened. But of course, there was no crime. This time,White told the boys, "Did I tell you I was going to bring some back-up,right?You guys ready?" And O'Neal appeared from a nearby SUV.
O'Neal played basketball with the boys and other officers as a crowd gathered.O'Neal eventually gathered the boys together and offered this wisdom:"Be a leader, not a follower;"
"Respect your peers and your elders;" and "You can be whatever you want to be." In addition,he passed out $100 to each boy—as long as he made one free throw shot.
25.Why didn't Bobby White send the kids home?

Two rare one-cent coins from the earliest days of the U.S. Mint he sold for a pretty penny.
The copper coins, both dating to 1792,went for a combined total $869,500 at the auction
(拍卖)held Wednesday in Anaheim,California. One of them, known as the "Birch Cent,"
sold for $517,000.The other, known as the "Silver Center Cent," went for $352,500.
Eric Bradley, spokesman for Heritage Auctions, said that while the sales fell somewhat short of the combined $1 million the auction house projected they would go for, organizers are still pleased with the result.
It wasn't clear why one coin proved more valuable than the other, the market just responded differently to the two,Bradley said.
The coins have historical significance that goes beyond their collectible value, representing "the transition in American history from the colonies to a new republic," Bradley said, "these are coins that were developed and thought up by the Founding Fathers who were trying to differentiate themselves from British coinage and British rule."
The words "Liberty Parent of Science & Industry," which are engraved(雕刻)on both coins, also show how the United States was trying to distance itself from the religious persecution and monarchy it associated with Britain, Bradley said.
The origin of the Silver Center Cent was also referenced in a letter from Thomas Jefferson to George Washington, and it is among the very first coins ever struck by the U.S.Mint in Philadelphia,Bradley added.
According to the auction house, the coin went missing before eventually being discovered in an English pub in the 1960s.The man who discovered it,Nigel Willmott, kept hold of it until 1997,when he eventually auctioned it off for 28,750 British pounds,Bradley said.
The penny's name derives from the fact that it was produced with a small insertion of silver at its center, a feature which made its intrinsic(固有的)value equal to its face value. It is one of about a dozen surviving coins known to exist with this insertion,Bradley said.
28.How much did the auction house want to sell the two coins for?
A.$ 352,500. B.$ 517,000. C.$ 869,500. D.$ 1 million.
29.What words are impressed on both coins?
A.The United States. B.Thomas Jefferson.
C.George Washington. D.Liberty Parent of Science & Industry.
30.Which phrase can replace the underlined part "derives from" in the last paragraph?
A.contributes to B.results in C.comes from D.reminds of
31.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Two coins sold for more than 43 million times their face value.
B.Nigel Willmott discovered the coin of the Silver Center Cent in 1997.
C.One coin proved more valuable than the other because of its silver insertion.
D.There are only two coins known to exist with a small insertion of silver at its center.

We're taught as children to extend a helping hand to those in need, but few of us follow this advice. What sounds good in theory is rarely practiced, especially when self-interest is the driving force.
By nature, the Olympic Games are about achieving personal bests.Years of dedication and sacrifice lead to the ultimate(终极的)world stage of competition. If there were ever a time to be selfish and focus on winning, this would be it.Yet one surprising example of compassion and humanity warmed the hearts of millions around the world, unfolding in the least likely of places.
During the 2016 Olympic 5000-meter race,American distance runner Abbey D'Agustino stumbled(绊倒), causing her to trip rival runner Nikki Hamblin from New Zealand.Under the bright glare of competition, most athletes would barrel ahead toward their own success: Track and field is a tough sport, after all.Yet Abbey showed her character was stronger than her competitive drive when she stopped running to help Nikki off the ground.
Abbey hadn't realized she'd suffered an injury of her own until she fell to the ground while assisting her competitor. As if scripted by Disney,Nikki returned the act of kindness by helping the injured athlete get back up and limp to the finish line. While neither came even close to a winning time, the two athletes who had never met embraced at the finish line before D'Agustino was whisked away in a wheelchair for medical attention.
You couldn't manufacture a better story of sportsmanship: two women sacrificing their medals to help their fellow human beings. The power of karma must have been present,as judges advanced both runners to the next round. They will also both soar economically given eager sponsors will want to endorse the two athletes with extraordinary hearts.
Pursuing our ambitious careers,it's easy to think we have to choose doing good OR doing well. We're either helpful and compassionate toward others OR we achieve great success.Truth is,it's an AND not an OR.By lending a helping hand when others are down,we not only do the right thing, but also end up enjoying more sustainable commercial success than had we selfishly focused on our own objectives.
While counterintuitive(违反直觉的)on the surface, doing the right thing actually leads to greater rewards in the end. While the compassionate runners will undoubtedly share the light of economic prosperity AND the comfort of knowing they made their countries proud.
Muster up the courage to do the right thing.Make it an AND instead of an OR,and you'll be well on your way to your own gold medal of doing well AND doing good.
32.In what country did the story mentioned in the passage happen?
A.America. B.Brazil. C.New Zealand. D.the United Kingdom.
33.Which is the correct order of the following events?
①Abbey D'Agustino realized her own injury.
②D'Agustino was whisked away in a wheelchair.
③Nikki Hamblin and Abbey D'Agustino embraced.
④Abbey D'Agustino stopped running to help Nikki off the ground.
⑤Nikki Hamblin helped Abbey D'Agustino get back up and limp to the finish line.
A.④①⑤③② B.④①③⑤② C.①④③⑤② D.①③④⑤②
34.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph refer to?
A.achieving great success and helping others
B.getting a gold medal and gaining benefits
C.realizing one's dream and enjoying oneself
D.lending others a hand and getting oneself well-known
35.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To explain self-interest in theory.
B.To introduce how to educate children.
C.To remind us of giving a hand to those in need.
D.To share a touching story happening in the Olympic Games.

Have you used "...um...like...you know..." in your speech? Crutch words are unnecessary words used to fill up dead spaces while you speak.Speaking too many crutch words is like a bad habit that we are unaware of.While most people tend to ignore it in everyday conversation,in a formal speech or an interview, too many crutch words can make even the best presentation look bad._36_
Stop when we are in doubt.Crutch words are used more often when a person is unsure about the sentence to use next._37_If you are lost or in doubt over what to say next, just stop speaking, take a long pause, breathe in,figure out what to say and start again.
Speak consciously and slowly. If the speech is too long and you talk continuously without thinking, then you might also be pushing in a few crutch words in between._38_It is best to memorize the tricky parts of the speech, like the introduction and conclusion which is where a majority of the crutch words are used.
_39_Preparing for the speech is very important when trying to remove crutch words.Make it a point to pause when there is a comma or give two pauses at the end of the sentence. If certain words in the speech need to be emphasized then underline them and practice them as hey need to be said.
Avoid Crutch Words in Conversations.Get a friend or your partner to help you out when rehearsing(彩排)a conversation._40_Although it can be an unpleasant and often embarrassing process, but in the long run it helps in cutting down on crutch words.
A.Practice your speech when you can.
B.Remember the saying that silence is golden.
C.Therefore we can find our best friends to guide us well.
D.Anytime you use a crutch word, the friend can point it out.
E.So we should learn some ways to avoid speaking such words.
F.Structure the speech well to include as much information as is needed.
G.The mind is so busy trying to figure out what to say that there is a strong urge to speak such words.

( Text 10)
Most Americans enjoy moving from one place to another. They are always in constant motion. For example, they often drive their automobiles 120 to 160 kilometres away just to have dinner with a friend or even fly to Europe just for a football match.
In some states, only one house in five has people living in it for more than five years. One may be born in one city, and go to school in another. He may finish his middle school education in two or three cities, and then attend a college far across the country. When he has entered into business,he may possibly move form job to job.Moving from job to job, which is called "job-hopping" is a very common practice in the United States.
Job-hopping does good to workers, because every chance to change a job gives them an opportunity to move up to a higher position and to get better pay.And job-hopping also gives employers, bosses and managers the chance to benefit from the new ideas and skills that different people bring into their firms and factories.
