I love desert! ‎ polar bear :I have thick white fur and like living in the coldest place. ‎ giraffe :Nobody has a longer neck than me. They provide joy, companionship(陪伴), and laughter for our lives. They also save our lives in many ways. For example, they guard our properties and save people in the earthquake. ‎ Furthermore, animals give their lives for the advancement of science. Lab rats are injected with chemical substances and operated upon so that we may find new cures for the many diseases that threaten our quality of life.‎ Human beings say that animals are our friends, but we always do not treat them so friendly. ‎ A lot of animals have been extinct(绝种), and some are endangered(濒临灭绝的) today. ‎ What Are the Causes of Animals Becoming Endangered? ‎ ‎1.Loss of Habitat(栖息地)‎ One of the most significant causes of endangered animals is the loss of habitat. While the loss of habitat may be due to natural forces – climate shifts(气候转变), geologic changes(地质变化), much of the loss today is due to human activities. ‎ In Asia, millions of foxes, dogs and cats are killed for their fur to make clothes. ‎ Some fur comes from animals caught in traps(陷阱).This is a picture of a ‎ poor fox caught in a trap that is used for catching animals. The animals are stuck in the trap for hours or even days before the trapper comes to pick them up. Some animals try to chew and bite their own limbs off just to get out of the trap. ‎ In what other ways do we use animals?‎ To eat To keep as a pet ‎ To do some experiments and tests People like keeping some animals as pets. ‎ When you are walking on the street, you can see many people take a walk with their pets. People love them and people can live a happy life with them, especially some elderly people.‎ ‎ The problem is that some people throw their pets away when they don’t want them.‎ Many people use animals to do some experiments and tests! It is reported that a total number of 12.1 million animals were used in tests in Europe in 2019.‎ ‎2. Invasive Species(外来物种入侵)‎ Another reason is invasive species. Many species arriving in a new ecosystem are ill-adapted and quickly die off. However, some species are able to invade and exploit the ecosystem to become the new owner. ‎ ‎3. Overexploitation(过度开采)‎ Overfishing a particular fish species will directly endanger a kind of fish. But other living creatures within the ecosystem may also be harmed by the overexploitation of a particular species. ‎ ‎4. Disease The spread of domesticated(家养的) animals has also spread the diseases to new areas of the world. In some cases, the diseases infected(传染) native populations which had little resistance(抵抗力) to the invading pathogen(病原体). These diseases may reach epidemic(流行的) levels, or even kill them off. ‎ ‎5. Pollution Pollution in many forms has endangered many animals too. Pesticides(杀虫剂 ‎) and other chemicals(化学制剂) used in the ecosystem may significantly harm some species. For example, DDT, used to fight mosquitoes, was eventually linked to declines(下降) in the reproductive rates(生殖率) of birds. ‎ Graveyard of extinction ‎ Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history. Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. ‎ Why should people care? Because we need animals, and because once they are gone, there will never be any more. Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying(毁灭) one kind of animal can create many problems . ‎ Be aware!‎ If we human beings don’t stop hunting those rare animals for our own benefits and take measures to protect them, “endanger” will become “extinct” in the end.‎ Animals also have rights(权利).‎ The right to life (生存权)‎ The right to individual freedom (个体自由权)‎ The right to be free from torture (免受折磨权) ‎ Animal protection organizations & animal-rights activists (动物权利保护主义者) intend to protect all animals from being exploited and abused(被虐待) by humans. ‎ What should we do for animals?‎ l Start to protect animals from ourselves and call others to protect animals!‎ l ‎ Stop animal cruelty!‎ l ‎ Build many organizations to protect animals, such as, SPCA(Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals防止虐待动物协会) ‎ l World Animal Day – October 4th ‎ Severn Suzuki At age 9, she founded the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), a group of children dedicated to learning and teaching other youngsters about environmental issues. In 1992, at age 12, Severn Suzuki raised money with members of ECO to attend the Earth Summit in Brazil. Severn Suzuki gave a speech from a youth perspective at the summit. The video has since become popularly known as "The Girl Who Silenced the World for 5 Minutes“. ‎ I am here to speak on behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go unheard.( 我演讲是为了世界所有忍受饥饿的儿童,而他们的哭泣却无人听见。)‎ I am here to speak for the countless animals dying across this planet because they have nowhere left to go. We cannot afford to be not heard. (我为这个行星上无数正在垂死的动物而演讲,因为它们几乎已经无处容身了。)‎ I am afraid to go out in the sun now because of the holes in the ozone. I am afraid to breathe the air because I don't know what chemicals are in it. (我现在害怕晒太阳,因为臭氧层出现了空洞。我现在害怕呼吸空气,因为我不知道那里有多少化学物质。)‎ ‎ I used to go fishing in Vancouver with my dad until just a few years ago we found the fish full of cancers. And now we hear about animals and plants going extinct every day -- vanishing forever.(以前和我爸爸经常在Vancouver钓鱼,但在近几年却发现鱼的身上到处是癌细胞。我们每天都会听说有的动物和植物绝种,那是永远消失的事情。)‎ I'm only a child yet I know we are all part of a family, five billion strong, in fact, 30 million species strong and we all share the same air, water and soil -- borders and governments will never change that. (我只是一个小孩,但我知道我们都是一个大家庭的成员,超过50亿人的大家庭,以及超过三千万物种的大家庭,政府和国界永远都无法改变这个事实。)‎ I'm only a child yet I know we are all in this together and should act as one single world towards one single goal. (我身为小孩都知道,我们在地球的母亲怀中都是孩子。我们应该为了相同的目的进行相同的行动!)‎ I'm only a child yet I know if all the money spent on war was spent on ending poverty and finding environmental answers, what a wonderful place this earth would be! (我只是一个小孩,然而我知道,要是把花在战争上的钱,用在找寻环境问题答案上来,或用在结束贫穷并找到解决的方案上来,这个星球将是个多么美好的地方啊!)‎ ‎ At school, even in kindergarten, you teach us to behave in the world. You teach us: not to fight with others, to respect others, to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures, to share - not be greedy. (在学校,甚至在幼稚园,你们大人教我们如何处世,你们告诉我们不要打架,要尊重对方。找出答案,解决矛盾。去分享,而不是贪婪。)‎ Then why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do? (你们大人为什么去做与你们教导孩子相反的事情呢? )‎ Well, what you do makes me cry at night. You grown ups say you love us. I challenge you, please make your actions reflect your words. Thank you for listening. (然而,你们所做的事让我在夜晚哭泣,你们成年人说你们爱我们,我不会再相信了,因为只有行动和语言的合一,才是找回信任和未来的唯一方法!谢谢!)‎ Let’s act together to build them a harmonious(和谐的) home!‎ Idioms related to animals Along with the development and progress of human society, animal idioms play a distinctive role and have rich expressiveness in languages.‎ And because of different geographical circumstances, historical ‎ backgrounds, regions and conventions between Chinese and English, the implied meanings of the same animal are possibly different.‎ Similarities in meaning He is as sly(狡猾的) as a fox. ‎ He’s foxy, and you’re got to watch him. ‎ as stubborn as a donkey 像驴一样的固执 Bring the child down to me for a few days.
