At the age of nine,I asked for parttime jobs in small radio stations. As I grew older,my interest in radio grew. One day I learnt about Internet radio.Once a week, I played my favourite music from my father's computer,talked about life at school, and hoped someone might be listening. Soon my friends at school started to listen,and then they wanted to help.We prepared a programme once a week,doing research by reading articles about music and sports news.We also did research for jokes and the weather report(I did this by looking out of the window). “OK,come with me,” the manager said.I sat down in the studio.He was in another room, behind a glass wall. “OK,let's do a sound check.Just tell me what you had for breakfast.” All radio presenters need to answer the same question before they begin work. The purpose❺ is to check the sound level. “I had eggs,fruit and some milk.” “OK,that's great!” the man behind the glass said. This was how my first real job in radio began. Learning to learn When you read a story,it is important to understand the order in which different events happen.You may find it useful to draw a timeline and write notes about each event. 知识点 1 likely/'laɪkli/adj.可能的;预料的;有希望的 likely常用于以下两种结构 eg:He looked likely to get his wish.他有望得偿所愿。 根据汉语完成句子 你们班谁有可能参加英语比赛? It's probable that he forgot. 他可能是忘了。 likely 表示外部迹象表明有可 能。 He is likely to come. 他可能要来。 图解助记:probable,likely与possible probable likely possible 十有八九 的可能性 十有二三 的可能性 十有五六 的可能性 汉译英 科学家发现在太空旅游是有可能的。 _________________________________________ 典例 Scientists found it possible to travel in space. 2 close to 离……近 close为副词,意为“接近”。 eg:The picture looks very different when you see it close. 这幅画贴近看时就很不一样。 eg:Don't stand too close to me.站得不要离我太近。 根据所给汉语完成句子 当你参观动物园时,站得不要离动物太近。 Don't stand too           the animals when you visit the zoo. 典例 close to 【点拨】表示“离……近”用close to。 3 It seems/seemed that...似乎/好像…… seem用作连系动词,意为“好像,似乎”。常用于 “seem(to be)+形容词/名词/介词短语”结构。 eg:He seems(to be)very sad.他似乎很伤心。 eg:It seems that he is quite happy. 他似乎很高兴。 seem to do sth.意为“似乎要做某事”。 eg:Our team seems to win. 我们队好像要赢。 It seems as if...意为“看起来好像……”。 eg:It seems as if it is going to rain. 天看起来要下雨。 —You seem     .What's wrong? —My son hurt his leg this morning. A.worry     B.worried C.to worried D.be worried 典例 B 【点拨】seem+adj.或seem+to be+adj.。 4 not... but...不是……而是…… not... but...用来连接两个并列成分,强调后者,在意思 上表示转折。当not... but...连接两个主语时,谓语动词 的数要与邻近它的主语保持一致。 eg:Not the twins but Jack has gone to America. 不是那对双胞胎,而是杰克去了美国。 eg:My uncle is not a writer but a teacher. 我叔叔不是一名作家,而是一名老师。 魔法 记忆 The thing that matters is not whether you fail or not,      whether you try or not. A.and  B.or  C.so   D.but 典例 D 【点拨】此题用直观法。从句子结构我们一眼可以看出本 题考查的是固定结构not... but...“不是……而是……”。 拓展 类似的表达还有not only... but also... 不但……而且……,表示递进。 eg:She can speak not only French but also Chinese. 她不仅会说法语还会说中文。 5 purpose/'pɜːpəs/n.意图,目的,目标 purpose常与of连用。与其相关的短语: on purpose故 意,有意地。for the purpose of为了…… eg:He did it on purpose,knowing it would annoy her. 他明知会激怒她,却故意那么做。 He studied hard for the purpose of getting a better job. 他努力学习为了得到更好的工作。 eg:The purpose of this meeting is to elect a new chairman.这次会议的目的是选举一位新主席。 The meeting was held      the purpose of reducing air pollution.
