Mike enjoyed going fishing and decided to buy a new boat. A friend named Peter said that he knew of a boat for sale at a place called White Bay. Mike telephoned and asked w 81 it was for sale. The woman who was selling the boat explained that it had been her husband’s. His name was Wayne and he used to go fishing a lot at night. One morning, however, another fisherman had found Wayne’s boat e 82 out at sea. Wayne wasn’t in the boat and people thought that he had been drowned (淹死).The woman said that her husband’s body had never been found. Now she
hated the boat and wanted to sell it q 83 .
It was a good fishing boat but Mike bought it very cheaply. He moved the boat 100 kilometres or so to a harbor near where he lived. One Friday Mike and Peter were out in the boat a long way from the coast. It suddenly became very cloudy and the air was white, so they couldn’t see anything a 84 them. Mike told Peter to turn off the engine and wait for the weather to get better. He said that there were a long way from land. It was much s 85 to wait. The men waited but the weather didn’t improve. In fact, it was more and more terrible. At ten o’clock Mike told Peter to try to start the engine of the boat, but he couldn’t o 86 it. Mike used the radio, but it was broken. Then the lights went out. They were in the dark and in a broken-down boat a long way out at sea. At midnight they decided to go to sleep. The next thing Mike knew was that it was morning and he could hear something noisy. Was it another boat? He opened his eyes and looked out. The noise wasn’t a boat, but a car. D. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题) (12分)
“If you are born with double eyelids (双眼皮), your parents will ‘save’ a lot of money,” said a family friend when I was five years old. Double eyelids, which are common in Caucasian (白种人), are rare among Northeast Asians. Only 25% of South Koreans are born with double eyelids.
I didn’t understand how having double eyelids saved my parents money until that summer when I came back to Seoul. When I reached the city, I noticed cosmetic surgery clinics (整容诊所) everywhere. I also found out that South Korean beauty meant looking as “White” or Caucasian as possible.
South Korea is famous for its cosmetic surgery. Girls usually get eyelid surgery as high school graduation presents. What made South Koreans fall so madly in love with cosmetic surgery? Cosmetic surgery has some kind of magical appeal (吸引力) to them---beauty. Women think that suffering (美容所遭受的痛苦) is necessary to be beautiful. They believe that beauty will attract a “good” husband, which leads to a better lifestyle.
Nowadays, men also ask cosmetic surgery for help because appearance is starting to play an important part in the workplace. For example, my 29-year-old brother, who is slim and over six feet tall, has more chances to get job than his best friend, who is shorter and heavier. You know, both of them graduated from the same college and had the same grades.
In fact, many South Koreans believe that physical beauty equals happiness.
88. There are so many cosmetic surgery clinics in Seoul, aren’t there?
89. How many South Koreans are born with double eyelids?
90. What does South Korean beauty mean?
91. When do girls usually get eyelid surgery in South Korea?
92. What do women in South Korea think of cosmetic surgery ?
93. What are your opinions of the last sentence “many South Koreans believe that physical beauty
equals happiness” of the passage? (at least two opinions)
