Unit 5 It must belong to Carla Teaching aims: Enable the Ss to use the modal verbs (must, might, could and can’t) to make inferences.‎ ‎ Get the Ss to be used to doing the cloze and reading training during a limited period so as to maximum their study efficiency.‎ Teaching key points: the usage of can and could; the usage of may and might; the usage of must and need.‎ Teaching difficult points: the negative reply to sentence including either must or may.‎ Teaching procedures: ‎ 1) Greeting and Listening (Listening is designed as the first step because the Ss can pay more attention when they are clear-minded during the whole listening period. Attached pls. find the listening material about text 5‎ 2) Revision Revise what we’ve learned last week about the sentences of unreal condition through translation exercises as follows.‎ 1. 如果我是你的话就会去参加会议。(If I were you, I would attend the meeting.)‎ 2. 如果他昨天来这儿的话就会看见他的老朋友。(If he had come here yesterday, he would have seen his old pal.)‎ 3. 如果明天下雨,你怎么办?(What would you do if it should rain tomorrow.)‎ 4. 如果我是老师的话我就会对学生严格。If I were a teacher, I would be strict with my students.‎ 5. 如果明天下雪,他们就不会出去。If it should snow tomorrow, they wouldn’t go out.‎ 6. 如果没有你们的帮助,我们就会陷入困境。(If it weren’t for your help, we would get into trouble.)‎ 3) Dictation I dictate the following words embracing 10 words and 5 phrases.‎ crucial关键的,重要的 owner所有者 interview面试,采访 extremely极其,非常 dishonest不诚实的 mystery 神秘的事物 symphony 交响乐 director主管,主任 lift举起,抬起,提升 ‎ garbage垃圾 组成,形成make up belong to属于 ‎ 与某人有约have/make an appointment with sb. 在…附近 in the neighborhood of ‎ ‎ 对…忧虑 be/feel/get anxious about sth. ‎ 4) Grammar points Get the Ss to read 3as in both Section A and Section B individually and correct their pronunciation if necessary.‎ Ask the Ss if they have any questions about the unit. Whoever comes up with a question will be encouraged and rewarded with a piece of paper shield.‎ Explain the difficult grammar points for the Ss, which is also designed in case that there is nobody raising questions.‎ A. Tom has gone to ‎ ‎ England.‎ ‎ 2. could ‎ I 是can的过去式,表示过去有能力及过去存在的可能。‎ e.g. He couldn’t go that day .那天他不能去。(可能性) ‎ He couldn’t answer all the questions when he was a pupil.不是所有的问题他都能回答。(能力) ‎ II 表示委婉地提法(现在时) ‎ e.g. Could I speak to Mr. Zhang,please?(电话里)请找张先生接电话好吗? ‎ ‎(3)表示吃惊。‎ e.g. He couldn’t be a thief.他不可能是个小偷。 ‎ How could he be so silly?他怎么会这么傻? ‎ ‎3. May ‎ I 表示允许 ‎ e.g. You may come here whenever you like.你想什么时候来就什么时候来。 ‎ 表示客气或委婉的请求用May,回答是也用May就显得冷淡。所以最好改用热情的答语。 ‎ e.g. ——May I smoke here?我可以在这里吸烟吗? ‎ ‎——Yes,please./Certainly.可以./当然可以。 ‎ II 表示不确定的推测 ‎ e.g. She may be right.她可能是对的。 ‎ ‎4. might ‎ I 用在疑问句中,表示委婉、客气 ‎ Might you make some room for me?您可以给我让点地方吗?‎ II 作为may的过去式,表不确定的推测 ‎ e.g. They thought they might be there on time. 他们认为他们可以准时到达那里 ‎5. must ‎ I 表示必须 ‎ e.g. you must come earlier next time.下次早点来。 ‎ 在回答由must引导的一般疑问句时,若表示肯定,用must。若表示否定,用needn’t或don’t have to。因为mustn’t表示禁止、不许可。 ‎ e.g. ——Must we all come tomorrow?明天我们必须全部来吗? ‎ ‎——Yes,you must./No,you needn’t./No,you don’t have to.是的,必须全部来。/不,没必要。 ‎ II 表示很有把握的推测。‎ e.g. Miss Gao must be in the office.高老师一定在办公室里。 ‎ This must be Wang Hai’s book.这一定是王海的书。‎ ‎ B Let the Ss to do some relevant exercises. Attached pls. find detailed information.‎ ‎ C key phrases ‎ ‎ be anxious about sb./sth.=be worried about 对…忧虑 ‎ be anxious to do sth. 渴望做某事 ‎ be anxious that 担心…‎ ‎ e.g. I am anxious about my grandma’s health.‎ ‎ I am anxious for your brother to help me out.‎ ‎ I am anxious that there are some mistakes in my composition。‎ ‎ . have/make an appointment with sb.与某人有预约 ‎ ‎ ‎ be crucial to/for sb/sth. 对某人/某事来说至关重要 ‎ be crucial to do sth.做某事至关重要 ‎ be crucial that+从句 ‎ e.g. Reading a lot is crucial to English study.‎ ‎ It’s crucial to find the solution to every problem.‎ ‎ It’s crucial that you realize the importance of study.‎ ‎ because of ‎ ‎ due to 相当于caused by,可作表语和状语,不能用于句首 ‎ 因为 thanks to 多亏,辛亏(相当于感谢)‎ ‎ owing to 可与due to换用,可用于句首 on account of 语气比较正式 ‎ e.g. I didn’t go to the movies because of the cold weather.‎ His illness is due to bad food.他生病是由于吃了不好的食物。(多作表语)‎ ‎ He can’t come because of the bad weather. 他不能来是因为天气不好。(多作语)‎ ‎ That was on account of lack of exercise. 那是由于缺乏锻炼。‎ ‎ Owing to the rain, the match was called off. 由于下雨,比赛取消了。‎ 1) Consolidation Get the Ss to do the exercises of exam paper relating to Unit 5. They will be asked to finish the multiple choice, rewriting, and blank filling first. Next I will check the answers together with them. Finally I will give my explanation for the questions but not for all of them. Only in places where the Ss make mistakes will I offer clarification.‎ Since the cloze and reading parts have already been finished by the Ss at home, I will check the answers directly. As for the cloze, I’ll let the Ss try to illustrate by themselves now that the method of comparison has been taught for many times. If any mistakes, I will provide my illustration. The exam paper is attached.‎ 2) Cloze and reading Training (for a limited time only)‎ The Ss are allowed to complete the cloze within 5 min, reading 4 min and a half. ‎ The Ss are to be guided to employ the context fully to finish the cloze.‎ Get the Ss to be used to skimming the first paragraph and the first plus the last sentences of each paragraph so as to quicken the reading.‎ 3) Sum Let the Ss take a look at the blackboard to recall what they’ve learned today. I will provide my summary as a supplement after their recollection.‎ 4) Assignment Ask the Ss to have a detailed review of their notebook, exam paper as well as other training materials. ‎ Ask the Ss to finish the cloze and reading parts of the mid-final exam paper at home within limited time.‎ Unit 5 It must belong to Carla 第一课时 单元分析与提示 教学目标 语言目标:‎ ‎1、掌握情态动词must, might, could, can’t的用法;‎ ‎2、学会谈论自己的推理,能灵活运用以下句型的词汇:‎ Whose book is it? S: Anna’s ?‎ T: I think it could be Anna’s. It might be Anna’s. Let’s ask her. Anna, is this your jacket?‎ S2: No, it’s not mine. It must be Lee’s T: It can’t be Anna’s. it must belong to Lee.‎ ‎2) Ask the students to practice the dialogue with T-shirt, CD, toy car A: Whose … is this? B: Tom’s A: I think it could be Tom’s. It must belong to John.‎ ‎3) Say: When we talk about things we’re not sure of, we use the words: could, might, can’t and must. And pay attention to the words “belong to John”, don’t say “belong to John’s”‎ ‎2. Point to the picture and ask:‎ Which items in the picture do you know ?‎ Which items are new to you ?‎ Clothing: hat, jacket, T-shirt.‎ Fun things: volleyball, CD, toy car, magazine, book Kitchen things: plate, cups ‎3. This activity provides listening and writing practice using the target language written by the teacher.‎ Must might could or can’t ‎7. Extension 利用各种各样的实物或图片,模仿听力的对话模式,让学生进行各种猜测。比如,拿一个同学的文具盒,根据里面的东西,让同学至少用3个猜测的句子要寻找主人,要学会逻辑判断。要求学生能通过自己的判断,得出正确的结论 Homework 利用2c部分的练习,巩固本课的重点内容。‎ Unit 5 第三课时 Teaching aims 熟练掌握情态动词must, might, could, can’t的用法,学会理解他们在句子中的含义。‎ Teaching of new lesson Ask the students to practice using the target language given below.‎ ‎1. T-shirt, whose, could be, might be, must be, belong to, the soccer ball, whose, can’t be, might be, must be, belong to.‎ ‎2. 2c. Ask students to make their own sentences with the sentence patterns given below.‎ A: Whose notebook is this?‎ B: It must / might be Ming’s ……‎ A: Why do you say it’s Ming’s ?‎ B: Because it was on her desk.‎ ‎3. Explain the uses of modal verbs(解释情态动词的用法)‎ must ________ 100 percent.‎ might / could _______ 20~80 percent can’t ________ 0 percent.‎ ‎4. 3a. 展示3a中的图片中女孩,请学生讨论:‎ ‎“What is Linda doing ?”‎ S: She might be playing computer games. / She might be writhing a e-mail to her friend.‎ T: She is writing a thank you message to Ann.‎ 任务1:Reading and put them into right order.让学生阅读句子,如果有生词,在生词上画圈,根据上下文猜猜它们的含义。‎ 生词:symphony, optometrist, appointment, algebra, crucial, anxious.‎ 任务2:Discussion.‎ S: What do you think “symphony” mean ?‎ S: It must mean kind of music.‎ S: Why ?‎ S: Because she went to the symphony hall for a concert. ‎ S: Yes, you are right.‎ Ask the students to practice the dialogue using the target language. ‎ A: anxious, can’t, find, backpack;‎ B: where, dropped; C: might be, during, need, because.‎ ‎5. 3b Talk about the words you don’t understand. Extension 利用4的图片。要求学生先在表格中写下自己的猜测。然后参照给出的对话模式以及上一节课的句型和同学进行交流。可以全班自由交谈,可以问问你感兴趣的同学的猜测,并且用Why do you think it must belong to a girl?等句型巩固本单元的语言目标,培养自己的逻辑思维能力。‎ Homework 将4部分是根据自己的猜测用4—5句话写一段文章。‎ Unit 5 第四课时 Teaching aims 学会用情态动词must, might, could, can’t对各种情况进行描述,培养自己的判断能力和逻辑思维能力。‎ Teaching of new lesson ‎1、Revision 展示一张姚明投篮的图片,篮球刚出手向篮框飞去:‎ T: What do you think about the basketball ? Will it get into the hoop or just hit the board? Why do you think so ? 让学生根据自己的判断用must, might, could, can’t 这些词进行描述 Yaoming is playing basketball on the playground. He is throwing the ball to the hook. Some players are trying to stop him. I am sure the ball must be able to get into the hook because they can’t stop him.‎ ‎2. Ask the students to fill in the blanks on their own.‎ 让学生用所给单词进行填空,检查答案,再用这些词语分别造句。‎ ‎2. Self Check 2 小组合作学习 Read these proverbs and ask the students to think what these sentences might mean.‎ 猜猜每句谚语可能的意思。‎ ‎3. Self Check 3 ‎ Ask the students to circle the words that don’t belong in each line.‎ ‎4. Summary the grammar ----- modal verbs.‎ ‎5.
