The Most Useful Invention of All Time?
Barbara Saturday, April 13
I’m writing a paper for my English class, and I need some ideas. What do you think is the most useful invention of all time? Thanks for your thoughts.
RE: The Most Useful Invention of All Time?
Cindy Wu Saturday, April 13
There are many—the phone, the car, the bridge, but these are not my choices. For an everyday, useful invention, I vote(投票)for the air conditioner. I live in Hong Kong, and during the summer, the temperature reaches 35 degrees Celsius or more. The heat is terrible! Without air conditioners, people here can not work or study. A lot of people might also get sick without cool air.

Jorge Sunday, April 14
The most useful invention of all time is the Internet. We can now communicate with people and do business faster. I own a clothing store in Mexico City. I also have a website. It’s faster than regular mails, and it’s cheaper than using the phone!

To us, it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact, the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a shade(遮蔽)against the sun.
Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, back in the eleventh century BC.
We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use: it became a symbol of honor and power(权力). In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in high office or by royal people such as the kings or queens.
In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece, but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the umbrella
as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the middle ages in Europe, the use of the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it became a symbol of power.
Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn’t until the twentieth century that the umbrellas for women began to be made in all kinds of colors.

Spending two or three hours playing outdoors each day can reduce a child’s chance of becoming short-sighted, a research shows. It challenges the belief that short-sightedness is caused by computer use, watching TV or reading in weak light.
The Australian government researchers believe that sunlight is good for people’s eyes. They compared the vision(视力)and habits of 100 seven-year-old children in Singapore and Australia. In all, 30% of the Singaporean children were short-sighted—this rate(比率)was ten times higher than Australian children.
Both groups spent a similar amount of time reading, watching television and playing computer games. However, the Australian children spent an average of two hours a day outdoors—90 minutes more than the Singaporean children.
Professor Ian Morgan from the Australian Research Council’s Vision Centre said, “Humans are naturally long-sighted, but when people begin to go to school and spend little or no time outdoors, the number of short-sighted people gets larger.”
We’re also seeing more and more short-sighted children in cities all around the world—and the main reason may be that city children spend less time outdoors. Daylight can be hundreds of times brighter than indoor light. But why does playing outside prevent us from becoming short-sighted? Scientists believe that natural light has a special chemical which stops the eyeball from growing out of shape and prevents people becoming short-sighted. So be outdoors. It doesn’t matter if that time is spent having a picnic or playing sports.
56、From the passage, we know that can reduce a child’s chance of becoming short-sighted.
A.staying indoors B.reading in weak light C.playing outside
57、How much time did the Singaporean children spend outdoors on average every day in the research?
A.2 hours. B.90 minutes. C.30 minutes.
58、What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A.Why playing outside is good for one’s eyesight.
B.Why natural light has a special chemical.
C.Why people become short-sighted.
59、Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.People will all become short-sighted after they begin to go to school.
B.Playing outdoors for 2 or 3 hours every day can help protect your eyesight.
C.If you spend two or three hours playing outside each day, you won’t get short-sighted.
60、Where is the passage most probably from?
A.A novel. B.An advertisement. C.A science magazine.
阅读表达 阅读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题。
On June 26th, 2000, two scientists, called Francis Collins and Craig Venter, told the world that they could now read the whole “map” of the human body—DNA. DNA is something that all humans have, and it tells the body what to do. DNA is the reason that we look like our mother and father, because we get some of their DNA to make our own. Now we can read some of this “map”, and so we can find out more about how our bodies work.
People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In 1860, Gregory Mendel discovered that there is a special reason why we look the same as other people in our family. It is because of small things called “genes” that we have in our body. In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick made another discovery and found out that those small parts are really messages written in the DNA with a special language.
In 1961, Marshall Nirenberg and Johann Mathieu found the first “word” that they could understand in that language, showing how DNA tells the cell to build its parts. This meant that one day we would be able to read all the messages that a human body gets from its parents’ bodies. Scientists have now found all the words in DNA map, but we still do not understand what they all do. By understanding what just one “word” means, we can help save people from several diseases. So the more we understand, the more doctors will be able to do.
Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine and help people who are very ill. Other people worry about that when we learn more words and find out lots of other information, we still use it in the wrong way, just to make people more attractive, or stop sick people getting jobs.
