Long ago, the love apple was grown in flower gardens. The plant’ s small yellow flowers
were not very bright, but it had very beautiful fruit, round, smooth, and shiny, which turned bright red or yellow as it ripened (成熟). It was beautiful but poisonous, or people believed so. Other people believed it has magic powers.
Early Spanish explorers who found this plant growing wild in South and Central America, carried it back to Europe. These plants appeared in gardens in Italy as early as 1554. They must have been the kind that had yellow fruit, because the Italians called the plant “pomidoro”, or apple of gold. By 1750, the plant was grown as a curious plant throughout Europe. Some people were even brave enough to eat the fruit.
In 1781 in America, Thomas Jefferson raised and ate love apples, but few followed his example. Thirty years later, the love apples were used as food in Louisiana, and by 1835, a few people in the northern states were willing to experiment with them too. But even as late as 1900, there were people who still believed that these “ apples of gold ” were poisonous.
Although people did not eat fruit of this plant, they liked looking at it in their gardens. Later, when they learned it was both good-tasting and good for them, they moved the love apple plant from the flower garden to the vegetable garden. They learned to call it by a new name “tomato”.

What should you take in with you when you take an exam? Pen, pencil, eraser, ruler…,
and don’t forget a bottle of water!
According to a study at the British Psychological (心理学的) Society Annual Conference held in London, students who bring water into exams may improve their grades by up to 10 percent.
Scientists at the University of East London and the University of Westminster, UK, did a study on 447 students. The students were studying for different degrees (学历) at the University of East London. Only 25 percent of them entered the exam hall with something to drink.
Scientists then compared their exam results with their normal schoolwork grades. They found that all those who had brought drinks with them got better grades by between 2 and 10 percent.
It is unclear why drinking water improves exam results. But scientists say having enough water in our bodies and not feeling thirsty could have a helpful effect on our brains. Drinking water may also cut down on anxiety (焦虑), which has a bad effect on exam performances, according to Chris Pawson, PhD, of the University of East London.
“Whatever the explanation, it is clear that students should try hard to stay hydrated (含水的)with water during exams,” he said.
So next time, when you are going to have a big exam, try bringing a bottle of water with you. Who knows – it may help you pass the exam!
( ) 51.How many students in the study got better grades?
A. About 112 students who brought drinks or water into their exams.

( ) 53.According to the passage, how does water help students in exams?
a. It is good for their brains. b. It makes students smarter.
c. It helps students stay cool. d. It helps students stay awake.

Worldwide, almost as many women as men die from heart disease. Yet most treatment methods have come from studies of men. Researchers are now learning more about ways that heart disease can be different in women.
For example, they say a condition called coronary microvascular syndrome(冠脉微血管综合症)appears to be more common in women than men.
When a heart attack is suspected, doctors look for a major blockage(阻塞物)in the arteries(动脉)that supply oxygen to the heart. With coronary microvascular syndrome, fatty material spreads evenly(均匀地)in very small arteries of the heart. This buildup of plaque(血小板)along the artery wall narrows the flow of oxygen. The pain can be similar to that of blocked arteries.
But doctors often miss this condition because it does not show up in the usual tests for blockages. Women are often sent home, thinking they are OK.Yet many are at high risk for a heart attack.
In USA,researchers say as many as three million women could have coronary microvascular syndrome. The Journal of the American College of Cardiology recently published findings from a government study.
The study is called the Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation(妇女缺血综合征的评价),or WISE.Ischemic heart disease involves restricted blood flow. The study began in nineteen ninety-six and involves more than nine hundred women who suffer chest pain.
Researchers found large blockages in major arteries in about one-third of the women. The other women looked clear on an angiogram(血管造影)test for blockages. But the researchers say half of them had enough buildup in small arteries to cause a heart attack within five years.
In men and women both, the most common warning sign is chest pain. But women are more likely to experience other common signs like shortness of breath,a sick stomach and pain in the back or jaw.A cold sweat and feeling lightheaded can also mean a heart attack.
( ) 54.Which of the following may be the best title for the text?
A. Tests of ten Miss a Hidden Heart-Attack Risk in Women

Online schools are becoming very popular with many people today. And now, even regular students are going in for online education, as it leaves them with enough time to do other things, such as a part-time job or a hobby, along with studying. However, as with everything, there are two sides about online schooling.
Let’s start with the good side. Online schools cost very little. You don’t have to spend money on books, or bus fees. Also, since you can work along with studying at an online school, you would not need to take an education loan(贷款). Another benefit of going to school online is the freedom it provides. You can study wherever you want - in your house, at a café or even in a park. Some people who want to study further, now no longer have to
take a break in their jobs, thanks to online schools.
However, those students who often need a push from their teachers to do well have a very high chance of not doing well at online schools. When studying in a class, different topics in a given subject are discussed and different students give their points of view. This is something that online schooling cannot provide.
Also, there are many employers(雇主) who prefer students with a regular and traditional degree to those who have an online degree. The employers feel that students who go to full-time colleges have more knowledge compared to those who have online degrees.
In general, it can be said online schools are good for some, while others should give them up! A person should see the situation he is in and then decide whether or not to choose an online school.
Are online schools a good idea?
The present situation
Online schools are so popular at present that some regular students also 74________ them.
Main point
Online schooling, like everything, has two sides as follows.
Good points of online schooling
•You spend 75________ money at an online school and you can work along with studying.
•You are free at online schools because you can study anytime and anywhere you want.
•If you want to accept further 76________, you needn’t give up your job thanks to online schools.
Bad points of online schooling
•Some students are likely to do badly at online schools for lack of a push from their teachers.
•Students do not have the 77________ to discuss with their classmates.
•After graduation, students with online degrees are not 78_______ by many employers.
Conclusion
Whether online schools are good for you is decided by your situation.
