There was a full moon and she could see the street clearly. There was a stranger standing under a tree. Was he waiting for someone? She watched him. Then a man who lived across the road came riding home on his bicycle. He went to open the door. The stranger under the tree suddenly moved forward. Mrs Kong could see him in the bright light. He pushed his way into the building before the man could stop him. Mrs Kong was worried. Was something wrong? She waited. There wasn’t any noise, and a bit later a light went on in an upstairs room. Maybe the two men were friends. She returned to her bed and was soon asleep.‎ When Mrs Kong came home from work the next day, her husband was waiting to tell her something. He looked very excited. “There has been a murder. A man in the building across the road is dead. Someone killed him with a knife. The police have been very busy, but there is not much information. Have I frightened you? You look pale(苍白的). Sit down, I will get some tea.”‎ ‎“I saw the killer,” said the white-faced Mrs Kong. Mrs Kong went to the police and gave them a description. “He was a well-built man, not very tall. He looked about 30. He had long, straight hair. He was wearing jeans and a blue shirt.” The police brought out a book of photos. “Do you mean this man?” “Yes, that’s him.” “Or this one?” “Yes― it is the same man, isn’t it?” “Unfortunately not. They are twins. This is going to be very difficult.”‎ ‎( ) 34. Mrs Kong went to stand by the window because __________.‎ ‎ A. it was a bright night B. she heard one man shouting ‎ C. she wanted some fresh air D. there was a full moon ‎( ) 35. Mrs Kong felt ___________when she saw the stranger push his way into the building.‎ ‎ A. calm B. anxious C. excited D. frightened ‎( ) 36. It was difficult to find the killer because ___________.‎ ‎ A. the killer had run away B. there wasn’t any noise ‎ C. the two men in the murder were friends D. the murder happened at night ‎( ) 37. We can infer(推断) from the passage that ___________.‎ ‎ A. Mr Kong was the killer B. the stranger came back home by bicycle ‎ C. one of the twins was the killer D. Mrs Kong knew the name of the killer ‎ ‎ C ‎ When I asked my daughter which item she would keep: the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said “the phone”. Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual, because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology. ‎ ‎ Point 1 The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about? ‎ ‎ Point 2 The mobile phone means that we are never alone. “The mobile saved my life,”says Crystal Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside, she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance to her rescue. ‎ ‎ Point 3 The mobile removes our secret. It allows marketing manager of Haba Deutsch, Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all around the world at any time of day to ask where they are, where they are going, and how their last meeting went. ‎ ‎ Point 4 The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says, “We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near——but we didn’t meet for the first two weeks!” ‎ ‎ Point 5 The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldn’t know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while they’re space-walking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can access(存取) the Internet, the biggest library on Earth. ‎ ‎( ) 38. How do you understand Point1-The telephone creates the need to communicate,…‎ A. People don’t communicate without telephone. ‎ B. People communicate because of the creating of the telephone. ‎ C. People communicate more since telephone has been created. ‎ D. People communicate more because of more traffic. ‎ ‎( ) 39. Which points do you think support the idea that phones improve people’s ‎ life? ‎ a. Point 1. b. Point2. c. Point3. d. Point 4. e. Point 5. ‎ A. c, d B. a, e C. a, c D. b, e ‎ ‎( ) 40. The underlined word simultaneously in Point 5 means __________. ‎ A. 同时地 B. 舒适地 C. 无负担地 D. 逐步地 ‎ ‎( ) 41. The best title for the passage is __________. ‎ A. Influence of phones B. Kinds of Phone ‎ C. How to Use Phones D. Advantages of Phones ‎ ‎ D Earlier this year in Norway, people buried a steel bottle with plant seeds, a wristwatch and rock samples (样本) in it. Why did they do this? They were making a time capsule (时间胶囊). Time capsules are small collections of goods or information that are stored somewhere safe. They can be opened by people many years later, giving future people a view of life in the past. They may contain (包含) newspaper articles, popular music recordings, and photos. Historians can use time capsules to learn more about societies that lived in the past. One of the earliest time capsules was the Detroit Century Box. On Dec 31, 1900, the city picked several photos and letters to be placed in a box. The box was then locked until Dec 31, 2000. The things inside the capsule give us a look at Detroit in the past. There were photos of people and places, as well as letters written by local people. Some of them even gave predictions for the future. One person predicted that Detroit would have a population of 4 million by 2000. But in fact, the city’s population was about 951,000 that year, according to historydetroit.com. Humans have even sent time capsules into space! The US sent two capsules into space on the Voyager spacecraft (旅行者号航天器) in 1977. They’re called the Voyager Golden Records. They contain sounds and pictures that show the diversity of human life and culture. For example, they have music by classical composer (作曲家) Beethoven and pictures of plants, insects and landscapes (山水风景). The Voyager spacecraft has traveled far away from our solar system (太阳系). It is hoped that aliens might find the time capsules someday and learn about us.‎ ‎ ( ) 42. What is a time capsule? A. A collection of medicine buried deep underground.‎ ‎ B. A small collection of things stored in a safe place. ‎ ‎ C. A store selling newspapers from the past. D. A video where future people can see the past.‎ ‎( ) 43.
