自动驾驶汽车技术的发展
You know how much your telephone has changed over the
past 10 years? Your car will change even more than that in the
next 10 years.
One of the biggest changes is that cars will drive themselves.
Some day you may not need to drive a car. You will just tell the
car where you want to go and it will drive itself.
Google
The American company Google has been working on a self-driving automobile for years. These cars are already on the roads in the United States, mainly in California.
Google cars are truly self-driving. These cars have no steering wheels(方向盘)or pedals(刹车踏板).
Last week, police ordered one of Google's cars to stop for driving too slowly on a public road. The car was not against any law, so no one was punished. But police did speak to the operators of the vehicle(车辆).
According to Google, its self-driving cars have been driven nearly 2 million kilometres. That is equal to the distance the average person drives in 90 years.
So far, no Google self-driving car has gotten a traffic ticket. Some of them have been in accidents when other cars hit them,
Tesla
Another American company, Tesla , added an "Autopilot(自动驾驶仪)" feature to its cars last month Tesla put the feature, a computer software program, in cars that were built after September 2014.
With the Autopilot turned on, the vehicle drives itself. The car will speed up, slow down, brake and steer by itself.
You can take over driving any time by turning the steering wheel or touching a pedal. Your car will slow down if the vehicle in front of you gets closer. It will turn at bends and change lanes if you use the turn signal.
Tesla Autopilot takes over driving at speeds over 29 kilometres per hour when you press, a button twice. Autopilot is made for cross-country driving. It keeps you in the lane and helps you avoid hitting other cars.
Other Self-Driving Cars and Buses
Other companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, Volvo and Toyota are working fit self-driving cars. Another company called BestMile is also working on self-driving buses in Switzerland. The buses can hold up to nine people and will be tested for two years.

媒介的力量
Bad news travels fast when you watch the evening news or read the morning papers, it seems that things that get the most coverage(范围)are all sad events or situations like wars, earthquakes, floods, fires and murders.
"This is the classic rule for mass media(大众传媒).They want your eyeballs and don't care how you're feeling, " Jonah Berger, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, US, told The New York Times.
But with social media getting more and more popular, information is now being spread in different ways, and researchers are discovering new rules-good news can actually spread faster and farther than bad accidents and other sad stories.
Berger and his colleague, Katherine Milkman, looked at thousands of articles on The New York Times' website and analyzed(分析)the most emailed list for six months.
One of his findings was that articles in the science part were much more likely to make the list. Those science stories waked up feelings of awe(敬畏)and made the readers want to share this positive emotion with others.
Besides science stories, readers were also found to be likely to share articles that were exciting or funny. "The more positive an article was, the more likely it was to be shared," Berger wrote in his new book. "For example, stories about newcomers falling in love with New York City, " he writes, "seemed to be shared more than the death of a popular zookeeper. "
But does all this good news actually make the readers feel better? Not necessarily.
According to a study by researchers at Harvard University, people are more likely to' say more positive things about themselves when they're talking to a bigger audience, rather than just one person, which helps explain all the perfect vacations that keep showing up on microblogs. This, researchers found, makes people think that life is unfair and that they're less happy than their friends.
But no worries. There's a quick and easy way to take the despair from you that you get from viewing other people's seemingly perfect lives-turn on the television and watch the news. There is always someone doing worse than you are.

( )2. Which of the following might be emailed most according to Berger?
A. The perfect vacation of your friend.
B. The death of a popular zookeeper.
C. The story of a creative scientist.

A. bad news always makes people sad
B. good news sometimes has negative influence
C. people can remove despair by reading good news
D. people prefer to share bad news with a bigger audience
( )4. What would be the best title for the passage?

习语介绍
For centuries, the body's blood has been connected closely with the feelings. People who show no human emotions or feelings are said to be cold-blooded.
Cold can affect other parts of the body. But the expression "get cold feet" has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be the CEO of a company. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned(辞职),and all the work of the company will be your responsibility(责任).You are likely to get cold feet about being CEO when you understand the situation.
The expression "give someone the coke shoulder" probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give the cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise(遵守诺言)he made to you, or to someone who has lied about you to others.
"A cold fish" is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone. Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted. He or she will never feel sorry for those in bad situation.
"Out in the cold" means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise-he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.
( )1. How many expressions about cold are mentioned in the passage?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Seven.
( )2. If you get cold feet, it means " ".
A. your feet are very cold
B. you offer much of yourself to anyone
C. you miss something that everybody else got
D. you are afraid to do something you have decided to do
( )3. You may think of an unfriendly person as" ".
A. a cold fish B. the cold feet
C. the cold shoulder D. being out in the cold
( )4. What's the passage mainly about?
A. Ways of making friends. B. Advice on keeping warm.
C. Expressions connected with cold. D. Opinions about cold-hearted people.

A 15-year-old student who invented a Flashlight(手电筒)getting
power from the holder's body heat is going home today from California
with a big prize and a chance to do further research.
Ann Makosinski was the only Canadian among the four winners
at Google's international science competition. Thousands of young scientists from around the world took part in the competition.
Winning the science and technology competition was "a surprise". Ann said, "I think it will have a great influence on my future. "
Ann thanked her family for encouraging her interest in science and said that her first toy was a box of transistors(晶体管).
Ann's prize includes $25,000 and a "once-in-a-lifetime experience" from Google for her Hollow Flashlight, which has no moving parts or batteries.
The idea for the invention came from seeing unwanted batteries and her friend's experience. When Ann visited a friend in the Philippines, she saw the friend couldn't study when it became dark because there was no electricity or light. She saw the need for a flashlight that has no batteries-Hollow Flashlight.
In her project, Ann wrote, "I made two flashlights that do not use any batteries or harmful materials. They do not create any noise and will always work. The flashlight needs at least a 5℃
temperature difference between the holder's body and the environment around to produce light. "
A video of Ann explaining how she created the flashlight has been watched more than 1. 4 million times on the Internet.
Though Ann was successful, she has not made a decision about her career path. Ann hopes that she can find a way to join her love of film and science together.
The four winners were chosen from 15 final competitors from eight countries. The competition attracted thousands of students in 120 countries.

Have you ever wondered what goes through your mind when you choose where to sit in a new classroom? Or in a waiting room, full of strangers? Or on a bus? Researchers have found out some interesting facts.
Girls sit by girls and boys sit by boys. Adults sit together and young people choose another young person to sit near. But it goes further than this. We even choose to sit near someone who looks like us. People with glasses are more likely to sit near other people with glasses. People with long hair sit closer to other people with long hair.
We seem to believe that people with similar habits or hobbies will share similar experiences and we are more likely to be accepted by people like ourselves, or even, we think we may be safer with people who look like us. Sometimes that's true but it's a pity if we always stay with the same
people, the same group. The danger always staying in our comfort zone(舒适区)is that we just recycle the same opinions, the same tastes and the same ideas. We lose the chance to learn something new, find out interesting things, hear funny stories and discover differences.
When we always stay with the same people, how can we break down the barriers which prevent us from getting to know people with different ideas? And how can we avoid the ignorance(无知)? If you want to live in a society that opens to changes, new things and different opinions, be the cat among the pigeons(鸽子).
Move out of your comfort zone. Go and sit next to someone different. And don't just sit there in silence. Say hello. Ask a question. Start a conversation. That's how we make friends. That's how we learn about people. That's how we open our minds to new ideas. That's how we live an exciting life.

You can't always know when there'll be a heavy rain or when to take an umbrella with you. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather report before going out should cause you to get wet in the rain. That's why he created the Lampbrella-a lamp post(灯柱)with its own "umbrella".
The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. "Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw people trying to hide from- the rain under the street lamps. I thought it would be a good idea to have a Lampbrella built into a street lamp," he said.
The Lampbrella is a street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy(遮蓬).It has an inside electric
motor(电动马达)which can open or close the umbrella freely. The Lampbrella will offer people
cover whenever it starts raining. After three minutes of not being used, the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a very low speed in order not to cause harm to people. What's more, it would be grounded to protect from a possible lightning hit. Each Lampbrella would offer enough cover for several people. Being 2 metres off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest man.
While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production(生产),Belyaev says he recently
introduced his citation to one Moscow company, and insists his creation could be on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide cover.

During all this time, I never stopped thinking about leaving. When I
travelled across to the other side of the island, I could see the other islands.
and I said to myself, "Perhaps I can get there with a boat. Perhaps I can get
back to England one day. "

失败后,走向成功
This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about man named George Washington. As I searched the name, I found that there were two famous people having the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts(花生),while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice; let the coin decide. I flipped(掷)a coin and Ah! Tails(背面)! My report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.
Weeks later, I stood in front of the classroom and proudly read my homework. But things started to get strange. I looked around the room, only to find my classmates with big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes and my stone-faced teacher. I was completely lost. "What could be causing everyone to act this way?"
Oh well, I dropped the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, "My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American War of Independence. " The whole world became quiet! How could I know that my teacher meant that George Washington?
Of course, my subject result was awful. Sad but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to the headmaster Miss Lancelot, but she said firmly(坚决地): No re-dos; no new score. I felt that it was not fair, and I believed I should have a second chance. So I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, I sat in the headmaster's office

主持人和嘉宾位置摆放
In chat shows on TV, you can find a set-up called right-side desk arrangement. In such programmes, hosts always place their desks to the right. Do you know why? That's because it makes them seem powerful. In western culture, people read them from left to right, and they watch theatre and television that way, too. Their eyes end up on the right side of the screen-where the hosts sit.

英雄的社会价值
Like many people, I have no clear idea about heroes. At some point, we all wonder if we need a hero and what a hero really is.
Although there are a lot of differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics(特点)which give us courage and make us want to learn from them.
A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a special story to tell and people think highly of it. But a hero is not just the person with great fame(声誉).
A hero has powers(力量)larger than himself. Some people want to live like a hero, and they have to experience life with new and further meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom they serve. What do they want to live and die for? If the answer suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes.
A hero has a vision form the mountaintop. He has the power to move people. He creates new possibilities. Without Uandhi, India might still be part of Britain. Without Martin Luther King, Jr.. Americans might take different buses, eat in different restaurants, go for walks in different parks, and shop in different stores because of the different colours of their skins.
There might be changes in society without a hero, but the speed of change would be rather slow. Thanks to heroes in history, they make the society develop so rapidly.

人生的不确定性
If you could see a movie of your life before you lived it,would you want to live it? Probably not. The excitement of living is that you don't know what's coming.
Sure, it's hard to see uncertainty(不确定)in such active light when you're out of work, or when you feel like you're failing. But uncertainty is really another word for chance.
When Allison graduated from Harvard, she had chances all over the place but had no idea what she wanted to do. She took a job in consulting(咨询),but she knew she wouldn't stay there. She took the GRE and scored so high that she was able to increase her income(收人)by teaching students. Still, she didn't think she wanted to go to graduate school(研究生院)。Allison knew she wasn't doing what she wanted, but she didn't know what she wanted.
She worried. All her friends were going to graduate school or starting their own businesses. She was lost and felt that she would never find anything out. After six years, Allison, by having a plan in mind, got married, moved to the Midwest, and used her consulting experience to get a great job. Allison realized that she spent her years finding her way: time well spent, and time we must all take if we're being honest with ourselves.
The only way to lead an interesting life is to face uncertainty and make a choice. Otherwise your life is not your own—it is a path someone else has chosen. Moments of uncertainty are when you create your life, and when you become who you are. Uncertainty usually begins with a job hunt, but it doesn't end there. Every new role we take on means another round of uncertainty. Instead of fearing it, you should find some ways to deal with uncertainty.

学会合理安排时间
Dear my friend,Zhao Hai,
School and homework, activities and chores, sleeping and eating. So much to fit into a single day! I asked some of my friends to tell me the one thing they felt they never have enough time for.
Alexis, 11, said, I don't have much time for friends. I wish I could talk to them on the computer and on the phone more times.
Rachael, 13, feels like she never has enough time to practice her flute and hang out with friends. Instead, she is always studying and doing homework.
Caitlin, 11, wants more time for skateboarding and Jamie, 12, wishes he had more time to watch TV.
Megan,12,said, I never have time to just to be me. I can't talk with my friends, write in my diary!
And Amerila, 12, told us that she never has enough time for herself because she is busy with
homework, practicing the piano, and sports.
Wouldn't it all be easier if time were like a DVD that you could slow down, speed up, fast-forward, or rewind(倒带)?Or have you wished that time was like an arcade(娱乐)game, and when your time was up, you could just drop in some change and get more
Well,we can't change the speed of time or get more. What we can do, however, is manage it. This means that we:
1. Consider everything we have to do and want to do.
2. Understand how much time each activity in a day will take.
3. Make a plan that helps us get through the day, week, or
month without running around.
If you learn to tame the time monster(怪物), you might be
surprised at how much you can get done. The real reward, however,
is that you probably feel less stressed and more happy.
A Daily Schedule(日常时间表)will help you plan every part of your day, from the moment you wake up to the moment you go into bed at night. You will be able to take control of how you spend your time from one hour to the next.
Best wishes
Yours
Bill Gray

爱自己的父母
Dear Lucy,
In your last letter, you asked me how to love your parents. Here is my advice.
●Make a picture for them. Whether with pencils or paints, it will be a treasure(财富)to them forever.
● Write a letter to them. Take your time to put your thoughts in it.
● Keep your room clean! Though it's a kind of the chore, it shows mom and dad that care.
● Cook them a dinner! It can be some rice, some cheese or some hot dogs; it can give them a break.
●Tell them that you love them very often. Your love can make them feel warm and proud.
●Never tell a lie(谎言)to them. Probably the biggest way to show them you love them is, never to lie. This shows them that you not only love them, but also believe in and respect(尊重)them.
●Create time to be with them. Watch a film with your mom once in a while, or go to a sports match with your dad once in a while just to show them how much you care and want to be close with them.
●If you do something wrong, apologize(道歉)and explain it! They will know you are sorry. You could do something for them to show you want to make it up to them. Just saying sorry can really show how much you love them.

Clothing is a language. It tells us about individual people: their personality, their age, their place in society and so on. If we want to know more about society, we can look at traditional clothing.
The continent of Africa has a long history and a rich culture, and this is shown in traditional dress. You often find three colours-red, gold and green in the clothing. The first colour stands for the blood of millions of people who suffered as slaves(奴隶).The second is for the rich resources of the African earth, and the third represents the grasslands of home.
The patterns on the clothing also have a meaning. A common pattern is in the form of a cross "×", which stands for "unity". Another pattern "☆" represents "strength".
Because clothing has a strong social meaning, people are very careful in choosing what to wear. It would be a serious mistake to wear the wrong clothing, or to wear clothes in the wrong way. For instance, in Ghana, a woman should wear her waistband differently according to the importance of the social event.
Traditional dress also tells us about everyday life. African designs are famous for loose clothing. The climate, with the hot sun and wide temperature ranges, requires that the clothes are comfortable for daily life.
Although many people wear western clothes, particularly in the big cities in Africa, traditional dress is very highly valued. This is because it has deep cultural meanings.

Have you noticed your life becoming a little easier? Now, when you go to a certain shopping mall, you can enjoy its free Wi-Fi there. When you want to take a taxi, you can book one with your phone. In fact, all these can be seen as the basic parts of a smart city.
The idea of a smart city was brought up by US company IBM in 2010. Generally, a smart city is a city that uses digital technologies such as the Internet to improve city planning, save money and resources, and make our life convenient. How smart
can a city be? Here are great examples that we can learn from.
In 2009, Dubuque became the first smart city in the US.
The city used smart water metres to take the place of traditional
