We’ve seen 3D movies, games, TVs and so on. Have you ever heard of 3D newspapers before? Yes, that’s what the Belgian newspaper, La Dernière Heure, decided to do for its readers. This is Europe’s first 3D newspaper.
It took the team two months to make the 3D newspaper. They printed 115,000 copies of the special edition (编辑) of La Dernière Heure, which is more than the regularly printed copies.
13
Each of these newspapers comes with a pair of free 3D glasses. All the images and ads in the newspaper are in 3D and the text is in the regular format (格式). Readers can get the best result by holding the paper 50 cm away from the eyes.
In fact, if people don’t wear the 3D glasses, the newspaper will be terrible to read because the images are not clear.
Although the first 3D newspaper is very popular, they have no plans to continue the 3D edition because it costs too much.

London used to be “foggy” for the same reason that cities like Beijing or Chongqing are “foggy” today. The “fog” was in fact smog, a mixture of smoke and fog. In other words, it was made by air pollution. In London, some of this pollution came from factories, but much of it came from the coal that people burnt in their houses to keep warm during winter. By the 1950s,
London’s smog problem had become so bad that the government decided to do something to clean the air. A new law was made and nobody could burn coal in any British city. Within a few years, the air became much cleaner. There were no more “pea-soupers”.
Many Chinese cities now face the same sort of problem with air pollution that London faced 40 or 50 years ago. However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve. One reason is that more of the pollution comes from the factories, rather than from coal burnt in people’s houses. If these factories were closed, this would harm the economy and lots of people would lose their jobs. The other reason is that changing from coal to cleaner fuel (燃料), like gas, is quite expensive.
However, the air in many Chinese cities is becoming cleaner and cleaner, as the government and people pay more and more attention to cutting down pollution. As a result, there are fewer “pea-soupers” in Beijing than there used to be.

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid named Kyle from my class walking home. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be stupid.” I had quite a good weekend plan (parties and a football), so I shrugged (耸) my shoulders and went on.
As I was walking, I saw several kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and he fell down. His glasses went flying. He looked up and I saw terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him. So, I ran over to him. As I handed him his glasses, he looked at me and said, “Hey, thanks!” There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
Later Kyle became the top student of our class, one of those guys that really found themselves. Therefore he had the honor (荣耀) to prepare a graduation speech. On the graduation day, I could see he was nervous. So, I patted him and said, “Hey, big guy, you’ll be great!” He smiled.
He cleared his throat, and began. “Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, maybe a coach … but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give him.”
I stared at my friend in disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend and was carrying his books home. “Thankfully, nothing happened. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.”

As teenagers, we should always keep safety in mind. But how can we keep safe? Here are some of my suggestions. First,we should be careful when we make friends. It’s dangerous to make friends online. Second, if we are in trouble, we should learn to call the police or others for help in time so that we can keep ourselves safe. Also,we need to eat healthily and safely.
