I didn’t have many friends growing up. I didn’t realise what I was missing until I met Alicia. We met in a history class my freshman year of college. The first time we hung out, she asked me a question to test my character.
“If you were in a sinking boat, would you try to fix it or just build a new one?” I admit I was a little upset at the question; I didn’t know how big the boat was, or how much water was in it, or if I even had any tools for rebuilding. I never gave her a straight answer! But our friendship began.
We went walking, doing things in the dorms and studied togther in coffee shops. She was a bridesmaid(伴娘) in my wedding, and we both walked 100 miles an hour. People even thought we were sisters because we looked alike in pictures. I really loved having a best friend. Yet as time went, we found ourselves in a trouble.
We were very different from each other. Lighthearted differences of opinion quickly turned into heated discussions, and it seemed to take a lot of work to keep the relationship. For a while, it just wasn’t fun—it was a trouble to be together. At times we both just wanted to give up. I have to
admit that if it had been up to me, our friendship would have ended. Why push something that just isn’t working anymore?
But Alicia saw something in me that was worth keeping. I know she swallowed more of her pride than I did. Now, I’m extremely glad we worked things out. Next to my husband and my sister, she is my closest friend. Even though we reach life from entirely different world views, we often find ourselves helping others together and seeing results only God could have brought. What a surprising life lesson God has taught us about forgiveness! Now, our differing opinions are easy to laugh about. She can eat her vanilla while I have my chocolate.

I will tell you the truth about plastic bags—the good and the bad sides and give a solution to this problem. Whether it is a shopping bag, a food bag or a trash bag, they are all made of plastic. Grocery store owners are very generous(慷慨的) in using plastic bags. They place the fruit in one bag and drop the box of milk in another. Ever wonder why?
The good side of plastic bags
Grocery stores, shopping centers, and restaurants are not thrifty in using and giving out plastic bags because they cost no more than a cent each, while a paper bag costs four cents. Plastic bags are produced so cheaply and massively(大量地) that they are used by 80% of store owners. In addition, they are light and very easy to carry and store.
The production of plastic bags has increased greatly over the last 20 years and producers of plastic bags are making large profits(利润). However, the bad side of plastic bags is becoming well-known. More people are now getting worried that the earth is becoming a victim(受害者) of the plastic bag success story.
The bad side of plastic bags
While production and use of plastic bags is good for business, it is not so for our Mother Earth. They have resulted in an increase in the amount of litter found floating in water or in the streets where we live.
Plastic storage bags, after usage, usually go to landfills as trash bags. They make the oceans dirty. They kill sea animals. They give off bad gases when burned. They simply pollute the ground, air and water.
That is the true cost of plastic bags and it looks like it is more than a cent. These are very alarming concerns and proper action needs to be taken.
