In her sixth period today, Mrs. Cox has taught a poem by a well-known black writer in the United States. She wrote the poem on the blackboard and read it aloud.
No sooner had she finished reading the poem than students' questions began pouring in. One boy said the poem was heart-breakingly sad. Another student, a girl, said she had read a book by the same writer, but she wasn't able to enjoy it as much as her mother did, and she didn't know why. A third, a keen viewer of TV theatre, recognized a phrase in the poem which had been used as the title of a recent play. As she answered the questions, Mrs. Cox made sure that her students understood every line of the poem. he asked them to discuss if the poem contained any message. The discussion became so lively that no one wanted to stop when the bell rang. Some said there was no message, some said it didn't really matter, and the class ended at that.
As she drove home, Mrs. Cox thought about the class she had just left. Today she could feel good about what she had accomplished as a teacher. None of her students looked bored. Every one of them seemed interested in the poem. Once they started to talk, they forget about the time. She
did not have to make them learn? she only had to answer their questions and to guide the discussion. This, she thought to herself, is what teaching is all about!

Shyness May Be PartlyInherited
About 92 million Americans are shy, and according to recent research about half of them inherited the trait.
The studies were discussed at the American Psychological Convention.
One study, by Harvard University, was of babies 21- 48 months old. It concluded that these babies had a high heart rate when shown unfamiliar people or different toys.
Although shyness is not new, it has only recently become of interest to
researchers. The first study on the genetic connection was in 1979.
According to Warren Jones of the University of Tulsa, social relations these days are more complex. "With less ritual(仪式) and more complex situations," he said, "shyness is a national concern. "
Not all shy people are anxious and fearful, according to another study. Evidence shows that only half of shy people are tense, worried, and fearful in social situations.
Many men use shyness as an excuse for failing in social situations, according to C. R. Snyder of the University of Kansas. "This is not true of females. Perhaps,
American men are pressured to be assertive(自信的) and successful. So they would rather say they're shy than admit they're incompetent. "
Shy people may do very well socially after the first meeting with someone. In
fact, shypeople tend to be more stable.
The psychologists said shyness seems to be cultural. Japan has the highest rating. China and Israel have the lowest rating. The United States rated in the middle.

Some people take lots of exercise. Others keep strict diets. But according to recent research, the best way to live a long and happy life is simple. Get a dog.
“We have known for many years that the company of a pet can increase well-being in a number of ways. ” says Dr. Bonnie Beaver, an animal behavior specialist at Texas University.
“For example, the survival rates of heart attack victims with pets are much greater than those of people without pets. ”
According to Dr. Beaver, pet owners are less likely to need a doctor. They recover more quickly when they do get ill. They have lower blood pressure, take more exercise and are more socially active.
Above all, they are happier. Seventy percent of the families Dr. Beaver surveyed said that their family environment was happier after they got a pet. And this is what Dr. Beaver and other researchers are trying to achieve. They want to find a scientific link between human happiness and a long life.
There is no final answer to this question yet, but it seems to be something to do withemotional ties. People with someone or something to love live longer. “There are many forms of animal-human relationship and some are very helpful. ” says Dr Beaver. It seems that the more lovely an animal is, the more it benefits our health. As the saying goes, “If you want to be loved, get a dog. ”
Pet ownership benefits men and women equally. Other life experiences divide the sexes. Women are more sensitive to bad marriages than their husbands because they work harder at their relationship, says Dr. Janice Glaser of Ohio State University.
The message seems to be that a woman is better off with a good dog than a bad husband. Yet in some ways, men are similar to dogs. They like getting dirty and making a mess. They forget birthdays. They can disappear for days. How can they be better trained?
64. According to the author, the companyofa pet does good to a person in the following ways

My house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software.
If you come to visit, you’ll probably be surprised when you come in someone will give you an electronic PIN (个人身份号码) to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are. The house uses this information to give you what you need. When it’s dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights nearest to you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with you too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it. The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings.
Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console,a small machine that turns things on and off around you.
The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you want to go to a movie, you need a ticket. If I give you my car keys, you can use my car. The car works for you because you have the keys. My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the console.
I believe that ten years from now, most new homes will have the systems that I’ve put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I’ve put in today.
I like to try new ideas. I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. But I hope that one day I will stop thinking of these systems as new, and ask myself nstead, “How will I live without them?”
68. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. How to develop a new system. B. The function of the PIN
C. A home for the future D. Easy life in the future.
69. What’s the purpose when the writer wrote the fourth paragraph?
A. To let readers know why his ideas are new
B. To explain what the functions of the PIN and the console are
C. To explain the importance of the PIN and the console.
D. To let readers know how special his house is.
70. The writer’s new house is different from ordinary ones mainly because _______.
A. it has your favorite music following you
B. you can make a telephone call anywhere
C. the writer is able to change his new idea into practice
D. it has been controlled by computers
71. What is the writer most likely to be according to the passage?
A. An IT expert B. A famous doctor

Japanese Students Suffer from Pressure
Last April,15-year-old Rei Iwasaki stopped her piano and flute lessons and began to study every day of the week. Her parents paid to send her to a "cram school(灌输式教学模式的学校). "She wanted very much to pass her exams.
In February she did pass an all-day, five-subject examination and entered the high school she hoped to enter.
Thirteen-year-old Akio Yoshiwara wasn't so lucky. Unable to take the pressure of the exams, he hanged himself in February. He left a suicide note which said, "I did my best in this dear life, but it's no good. "
Suicides are now a common part of life among students in Japan. The cause is the incredible pressure of the "examination hell. "
Even a number of teachers are committing suicide each year. When some students broke windows in a school near Tokyo, the principal blamed himself and wrote the following note: "The incidents were due to the lack of appropriate measures by the principal and I apologize. I am very tired.
The Japanese educational system is much different from the American system. It is perhaps the most regimented(严密组织的) school system in any of the industrialized nations.
Boys and girls wear uniforms and go to school six days a week --- 240 days a year compared to 180 in the U. S. Ninety- five percent graduate from high school compared to seventy-five percent in the U. S.
Students don't ask questions in class but only listen respectfully to the teachers. And every few years students are tested to see which school they will enter next. There is stiff competition for the "best" schools.
The result is a well-informed, disciplined student, ideal for factory and company work and excellent at learning specialized skills. But there is little fun in education, little creativity and the incredible pressure of "examination hell. "
72. It's because ______ that many Japanese students committed suicide.
A. they didn't do their best in their lives.
B. they were sent to a "cram school".
C. of the most regimented school.
D. they were unable to take the pressure of the exams.
73. Why did the principal kill himself? Because__________
A. He thought it was his fault that some students broke the windows.
B. He was very tired.
C. He couldn't stand the pressure of the "examination hell".
D. He blamed himself and wrote a note.
74. Which of the following ideas agrees with the title of the passage.
A. The Japanese students love to study under pressure.
B. The Japanese students do well under pressure.
C. The exams give the Japanese students much pressure.
D. The exams make the Japanese students commit suicide each year.
75. Which of the following is Wrong?
A. The American educational system is much different from the Japanese system.
B. To enter a high school, a student must pass an all-day, five-subject examination.
C. The Japanese graduates from high school are much less than the American graduates.
D. In Japanese education, there is little creativity as well as little fun.

第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的词。
注意:每空一词。
When we think of leadership, we often think of strength and power. But what are these really and how do they operate?
Leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. Even if this is possible, it is short-term, and tends to backfire (产生事与愿违的后果. If you order someone to do something against their will, they may do it because they feel they must, but the anger they feel will do more harm in the long-term. They will also experience fear.
Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or her best . If they associate you with this emotion of fear, they will become less functional around you, and you will have succeeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a very good employee or partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place in leadership.
The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and our understanding and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, which may be part of the work day?
or we can employ them at the emotional level, so they became fully devoted to the projects and provide some of their own motivations. Today’s work place is all about relationships
Anyone works harder in a positive environment in which they’re recognized and valued as a human being as well as a worker. Everyone produces just a bit more for someone they like. Leaders understand the way things work. They know the paycheck is not the single most motivating factor in the work life of most people.
The true strength of leadership is an inner strength that comes from the confidence of emotional intelligence---knowing your own emotions, and how to handle them, and those of others. Developing your emotional intelligence is the single best thing you can do if you want to develop your relationships with people around you, which is the key to the leadership skills.

书面表达:
Is it Wise to Celebrate the Lantern Festival with Fireworks?
In China , it’s a custom to celebrate the Lantern Festival by setting off fireworks. In my city, there is an annual firework show sponsored by the government. It is true that setting off fireworks does offer relaxation and excitement to the citizens. However, I don’t think it is wise to celebrate the Lantern Festival in this way. My reasons are as follows.
Firstly, it is really a waste of money. The fireworks last only 30 minutes, but it costs about 1. 5 million yuan, which can be used for the city construction. Secondly, while fireworks are wonderful to look at, they cause air pollution. Besides, some unexpected fires might break out , causing heavy damage and loss.
In conclusion, celebrating the Lantern Festival with fireworks isn’t necessary.

M: Thank you for your advice.
W: Don't mention it.

W: Hello, Bob? How was your summer? You studied Chinesethis summer, didn't you?
M: Yes. Jenny. I’ve finished my summer school class.
W: Well, how was the course? Chineseis very difficult, isn’t it?
M: It seemed that way at first. But after a while, it became easier.
W: I guess you did very well, didn't you?
M: Well, I didn't get an “A”. But I don't think I’ll have trouble in understanding everyday Chinese.
W: You mean you are going to China?
M: Yes, but not this summer. How about you? You’ll go to travel, won’t you?
W: I’d love to, but I have to work to save money first. I’m going to Egypt next summer.
M: I guess we’ll have lots to talk about next summer, won’t we?.
W: I agree.

W: Bill is a lucky man!
M: Mm… yes. She is a wonderful person, his wife, I mean.
W: Oh, I agree. Did he meet his wife here in London? At work, I mean.
M: No, I don't think so. I’m almost sure he knew her before he began to live here.
W: Oh, where did he live before?
M: I am not at all sure. Was it Sydney?
W: Oh… is he Australian?
M: Oh, yes, I think so. Haven’t you noticed his accent?
W: Well, yes. At first I thought he sounded like an American.
M: Well, he did spend some time in America. He was talking about it the other day.
W: Oh, well, that explains it.
M: Maybe that’s where he met his wife.
W: In America? Perhaps he did.

M: Hello, is this the reception desk?
W: Yes, may I help you?
M: This is Henry Jones in Room 742. I checked in about ten minutes ago.
W: Ah, yes, Mr. Jones. How can I help you?
M: You can help me by getting my bath put right. It’s in an absolutely terrible condition. When I
tried the shower, no water came out at all.
W: Oh, dear, I’m sorry to hear that. I’ll have it fixed immediately.
M: And that is not all. There is no soap, towel or toilet paper.
W: I apologize for this, Mr. Jones. We’re rather short of hands at present. The house-keeper should have checked your room. We’ll attend to it as soon as possible. There’s been
misunderstanding.
M: That’s all right. The most important thing is to fix it as soon as possible.

The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern
Communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many forms. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it. Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the
only kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise
pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in
houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air.
