Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers urged,
“Barbara,be enthusiastic!Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.”
How right they were!Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra
work into opportunity and strangers into friends.
“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,”wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is
the paste that helps you hang in there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers,
“I can do it!”when others shout,“No,you can't.”
It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock,a geneticist(遗传学家)who
won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine,to be generally accepted.Yet she didn't let_up on her
experiments.Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.
Author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote,“Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up
enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”
Enthusiastic people also love what they do , regardless of money or title or power. If we
cannot do what we love as a fulltime career,we can treat it as a parttime interest, like the head
of state who paints, the nun(修女)who runs marathons, and the official who handcrafts(手工制
作)furniture.
We can't afford to waste tears on“mighthavebeens”.We need to turn the tears into sweat
as we go after“whatcanbe”.
We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our sensesfinding pleasure in the
fragrance of a backyard garden , the crayoned( 蜡 笔 的 )picture of a sixyearold , the
enchanting, beauty of a rainbow. It is such enthusiastic love of life that puts a sparkle in our
eyes,a lift in our steps and smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.
1.What can be the best title of this passage?
A.Find pleasure in what you are doing
B.Wake up your life
C.To give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul
D.No pains,no gains
2.What conclusion does the writer draw through the experience of finding a job?
A.Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.
B.Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
C.We can't afford to waste tears on“mighthavebeens”.
D.Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity
and strangers into friends.
根据第二段“Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an
adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends”这是作者从寻找工作的经历中
3.Which of the following statements is WRONG according to the passage?
A.No one can achieve great success without enthusiasm.
B.Enthusiasm will take a person further than any amount of his experience.
C.We should make great efforts to do the thing that can be done instead of regretting for the
past.
D.Barbara McClintock was generally accepted many years before she won the Nobel Prize.
根据第四段“It took years and years for the early work of Barbara
McClintock...to be generally accepted”可知选 D 项。]
4.Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “let up”?
A.Continue. B.Make less effort.
C.Make great effort. D.Stop.
尽管如此,她并没有因此而少做实验,B 项中 make less effort 与 let up

Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours(绕行路)in life than
by the narrow road toward goals.I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the
deep meaning of his words.
For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents' home in Boise in
nine hours. We traveled the way most people do:the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when
I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hates confinement(限制)and have strong opinions
about everything.
Road trips felt risky,so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to.We would stick to the
freeways and arrive tired.
But then Banner, our lamb was born.He was rejected by his mama days before our planned
trip to Boise.I had two choices:leave Banner with my husband,or take him with me.My husband
made the decision for me.
That is how I found myself on the road with four kids,a baby lamb and nothing but my
everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop
every hour , let Banner shake out his legs and feed him.The kids chased him and one
another. They'd get back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.
We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waisthigh grass.Even if we simply looked
out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother,or fish leaping out of the water,it was
better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons(见识).
We eventually arrived at my parents'doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.
I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique. On an
empty section of road, everyone started quarreling.I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told
them to meet me up ahead.I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.
Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes
to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a
detour may uncover the best part of a journey—and the best part of yourself.

During last summer vacation,I thought I should do something meaningfully,so I got a job at
a fast food restaurant and worked there for a cleaner.I worked seven hour a day for three
weeks. The job was boring and seemed endless,in which made me so tired that I nearly stopped
them half way. However,I stick to it with determination.Every day I started off for work early in
the morning but got home late in the evening. Finally,I finished the job before the new school
term. Now,I understand that labor means.I think it is really successful experience, which is worth
remember forever.
