I used to believe courtesy was a thing of the past. Very seldom have I encountered
a courteous human being in this modern era.
Recently, I had to change my thinking, when I came face to face with just such
a human being in a coffee place, with my two daughters. The place was crowded as usual
and we had to climb steep(陡的) stairs in order to find an empty table. After enjoying
coffee and snacks, we went down the narrow stairs, where there was hardly any space
for another person to either climb up or come down.
Just as I was in the middle of the stairs, a man entered the main entrance of
the restaurant which was right in front of the staircase(楼梯). I was sure I would
3
be pushed roughly by this man going up. I kept coming down as fast as I could. My
daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them
before the stranger started walking up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort.
Nearly reaching them, I noticed the man still standing near the door. I reached
my daughters and passed the stranger at the entrance door which he kept holding open.
I looked back, thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find
another less crowded place. I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my
daughters about it and all three of us felt bad that we did not even thank the courteous
gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through before
going up.
Such well mannered people are hard to find these days when pushing is very common
in our advanced but aggressive society. We applauded for his chivalry(彬彬有礼).

It’s well known to car drivers that red means “stop”, green means “go”, and
yellow means “hurry up and make that damn light”.Why those colors, though? The
answer lies in the fact that the earliest traffic signals were designed for trains,
not cars. They were red and green, gaspowered, and more than a little dangerous in
the event of a leak.
Red is an inherited(继承的) symbol from railroads, which symbolizes danger in
many cultures. As red has a longer wavelength than any other color on the visible
spectrum(光谱), it can be seen from a greater distance than other colors.Red has meant
“stop” since long before cars existed, with train signals’ use of red dating back
to the days when mechanical arms lifted and lowered to indicate whether the rail ahead
was clear.
Green’s wavelength is next to(and shorter than) yellow’s on the visible spectrum,
meaning it’s still easier to see than any color other than red and yellow.Back in
the early days of railway lights, green meant “caution”, while the “allclear”
light was, well, clear or white. It is said that several disastrous collisions happened
after an engineer mistook stars in the night for an allclear. Thus, green became“go”,
and for a long time, railways used only green and red to signal trains.
From the earliest days of motoring up until the mid1900s,not all stop signs
were red—many were yellow, because at night it was all but impossible to see a red
stop sign in a poorly lit area.In 1915 the yellow stopsign craze began in Detroit,
a city that five years later installed its first electric traffic signal, which
happened to include the very first yellow traffic light.
But what of those mysterious yellow stop signs? As materials and technologies
evolved, the ability to produce highly reflective signs meant that red could resume
its natural spot in the sign hierarchy, leaving the stillhighlyvisible yellow to
the domain(领域) of “caution”.That’s why school zones and buses, crosswalks, and
other important warnings are yellow today.
7.What were traffic lights originally intended for?
A.Trains. B.Cars.
5
C.Planes. D.Ships.

traffic signals were designed for trains, not cars.”

A.It can be seen even in dark areas.
B.It represents danger in many cultures.
C.It has the longest wavelength.
D.People prefer red to other colors.
根据第二段中的“As red has a longer wavelength than any
other color on the visible spectrum(光谱),it can be seen from a greater distance
than other colors.”
9.Which of the following may the author agree with?
A.The meaning of red is culturespecific.
B.Yellow functioned as stop signs in the 1900s.
C.Green’s wavelength is just second to that of red.

10.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The significance of road traffic signs.
B.The history of railroad transportation.
C.The symbolic meaning of different colors.
D.The origin and development of traffic lights.

Justin was a climber. By one and a half, he had discovered the__plum__tree in
the backyard, and its friendly branches became his favorite place. At first he would
13
climb just a few feet and make himself comfortable where the trunk met the branches.
Soon he was building himself a small fort( 要 塞 ) and dragging
his__toy__tractors__and__trucks up to their new garage.
One day when he was two, Justin was playing in__the__tree as usual. I turned
my back, but didn’t find him. “Justin, where are you?” I cried out. His tiny
voice called back, “Up here, Mommy, picking all the plums for you!” I looked
up in horror and disbelief. There was Justin on__the__roof__of__the__house,__filling
his__plastic__basket with the ripe plums from his favorite tree.
When Justin was three, I became pregnant(怀孕的). My husband and I explained
to him that we were going to have another baby as a playmate for him. He was very
excited, kissed my tummy(肚子) and said,“Hello, baby, I’m your big brother, Justin.”
From the beginning he was sure he was going to have a little sister, and every
day he’d beg to know if she was ready to play yet. When I explained that the__baby
wasn’t arriving until the end of June, he seemed confused. One day he asked, “When
is June, Mommy ? ” I realized I needed a__better_explanation;__how could a
threeyearold know what “June” meant? Just then, as Justin climbed into the
low branches of the plum tree, he gave me the answer I was looking for—his special
tree.
“Justin, the baby is going to be born when the plums are ripe. You can keep me
posted when that will be, okay?”I wasn’t completely sure if I was on target, but
the gardener in me was confident I’d be close enough. Oh, he was excited! Now Justin
had a way to know when his new baby sister would come to play.

the baby would also be ripe soon. He even took out his__toy__tractors__and__trucks
for his baby sister. At last, he won. He had a beautiful sister!
