A day after moving to the Windy City last year, Outland, started a new job and never got a chance to explore her new surroundings. After nine months as a resident, she finally took a week off work to visit famous landmarks, museums and shopping centers that were right under her nose.‎ If you glance through a newspaper or listen to a news broadcast recently, you may hear or spot a strange word, “staycation”. Staycation is a new word the American press is employing to describe a vacation very close to your home, or simply staying at home during your vacation. It is a combination of the words “stay” and “vacation”.‎ According to many news reports, these staycations are achieving great popularity among American families this year. When asked about the reason for their expected staycation, respondents stated “gas prices are too high”(61 per cent), “travel in general is too expensive” (44 per cent). The high price of gas for cars and airplanes has made it very expensive for Americans to travel compared to past years. When you combine this with the weak American dollar, it all adds up to people deciding to stay close to home during their traditional summer vacations.‎ For aggressive young Americans who are trying to balance family and work, a staycation can be a great concept. They want to enjoy their homes and the attractions in their area without the stress of packing or making reservations. They won’t be paying high fuel prices either directly, at the pump, or indirectly, in airfare, other than the gas required to drive around town. Absolutely, it’s friendlier on ‎ the environment when locals take trips to attractions in their own area, and not everyone is game for a vacation that involves staying on a hotel compound. Few people live close enough to a real destination to make this worth their while. ‎ ‎( )21. How long after moving to Chicago did Sarah Outland take a staycation?‎ A. A day. B. A week. C. A month. D. Nine months.‎ ‎( )22. The author develops the second paragraph of the passage by . ‎ A. making a comparison B. giving a definition C. offering an analysis D. providing an example ‎( )23. Staycations are popular with American people mainly due to . ‎ A. high traveling expenses B. stress of packing C. relatively low income D. lack of real destinations ‎( )24. The underlined part “is game for” (in Para.4) means “ ”. ‎ A. is tolerant of B. is opposed to C. is willing to try D. is expert in B As Apple tries to maintain its growth and success in China, the world’s largest smart-phone market is becoming even more critical. Apple’s shares(股份) fell sharply as the company’s earnings for the holiday quarter through December disappointed investors.‎ The sales of the iPhone, which include both the iPhone 5 and older models, came in at the low end of analysts’ expectations, while the company’s income plan for the second quarter was below analysts’ forecasts, though Apple is known to give conservative(保守的) forecasts.‎ Some analysts have said that for Apple to regain its growth, the company needs a more aggressive strategy for markets, or more specifically for China, where the market for smart phones has been expanding more rapidly than anywhere else. In China, demand is particularly great for inexpensive phones that run on Android(安卓) operating system, sold by many Chinese phone makers as well as South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co.‎ But Apple says it’s already enjoying strong growth in China. “We saw big growth in iPhones,” Chief Executive Tim Cook said. He said that the company has been quickly expanding its sales channels in China, including the number of Apple stores. “This isn’t nearly what we need, we’re not even close to that, but we’re making great progress,” he said.‎ In China, a big missing piece for Apple is China Mobile Ltd., the biggest local telecom carrier that doesn’t yet sell the iPhone. Earlier this month, Mr Cook met China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua in Beijing and discussed cooperation, stirring hopes that the world’s largest mobile carrier may soon start offering the iPhone.‎ Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is working on a lower-end iPhone that could launch as early as this year. But one possible challenge for Apple in China is that low-priced Android-based phones are getting better in terms of quality. A report from CLSA in late November showed that many smart phones sold at about 1,000 yuan($160) came with higher-resolution screens, better cameras and more powerful processors than phones at that price did a year earlier.‎ ‎( )25. Apple’s shares dropped sharply because in December . ‎ A. the iPhone wasn’t popular in China B. its product quality was widely criticized C. the earnings for the holiday quarter was disappointing D. the investors were not satisfied with Apple’s management ‎( )26. What can we learn from the passage?‎ A. Apple tends to offer a lower sales forecast.‎ B. China Mobile Ltd. began to team up with Apple.‎ C. Cook is pessimistic about what Apple did in China.‎ D. Apple didn’t take measures to develop Chinese market.‎ ‎( )27. The author uses the report from CLSA to prove . ‎ A. their prices are actually lower than a year earlier B. Apple in China has ability to deal with any problem C. low-ended Android-based phones are progressing fast D. the promotion of lower-end iPhone will face a challenge ‎( )28. The main purpose of the passage is to show the readers . ‎ A. Apple’s high popularity in China B. the challenge Apple faces in China C. the approaching failure Apple will suffer in China D. Apple’s aggressive strategy in its market expansion C Several years ago, Masaru Ibuka, chairman of Sony, was at a company planning a meeting. Suddenly he had a brilliant idea. He stopped the meeting and asked everyone present what would happen if Sony removed the recording function and speaker and sold headphones with a tape player instead. Almost everyone thought he was crazy. Still, Ibuka kept thinking about his idea and worked at improving it. The result, of course, turned out to be the wildly successful Sony Walkman.‎ Good ideas often start with a seemingly silly question. Bill Bowerman was making breakfast one day. As he stood there making waffles(烘饼) for his son, he wondered what would happen if he poured rubber into his waffle iron. Later, he tried it and ‎ the result looked something like the bottom of most sports shoes we see today. Still, when he took this idea to several existing shoe companies, he was laughed at. In fact, every single company turned him down. Though rather discouraged, Bowerman insisted and went on to form his own company, making NIKE athletic shoes.‎ Sometimes good ideas grow out of frustration(受挫). When Fred Smith was a student at Yale University, he had some paperwork that he needed to have delivered across the country the next day. Smith was amazed to find out that overnight delivery was impossible. He sat for a long while, lost in thought. Why couldn’t there be a reliable overnight mail delivery service? He decided to design one. Smith did just that and turned his design into a class project. His business professor gave him only a C for his efforts. However, Smith was not through. He improved the idea in that class project and finally turned them into one of the first and most successful overnight mail services in the world—FedEx.‎ We know that each of these ideas led to a very successful product or service that has changed the way many of us live. The best questions are usually open-ended and are often silly. Children aren’t afraid to ask such questions, but adults frequently are. Think how different the world might be if people never asked “silly” questions!‎ ‎( )29. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?‎ A.
