‎2014高考英语阅读理解基础训练二轮精品题(18)及答案 阅读理解 One reaction to all the concern about tropical deforestation is a blank stare that asks the question, "Since I don't live there, what does it have to do with me?"‎ ‎ The answer is that your way of life, wherever you live in the world, is tied to the tropics in many ways. If you live in a house, wash your hair, eat fruits and vegetables, drink soda, or drive a car, you can be certain that you are affected by the loss of tropical forests.‎ ‎ Biologically, we are losing the richest regions on earth when, each minute, a piece of tropical forest, the size of ten city blocks, disappears. As many as five million species of plants, animals, and insects (40 to 50 percent of all living things) live there, and are being lost faster than they can be found and described. Their loss is immeasurable.‎ ‎ Take rubber for example. For many uses, only natural rubber from trees will do. Synthetics are not good enough. Today over half the world's commercial rubber is produced in Malaysia and Indonesia, while the Amazon's rubber industry produces much of the world's four million tons. And rubber is an important material in making gloves, balloons, footwear and many sporting goods. Thousands of other tropical plants are valuable for their industrial use.‎ ‎ Many scientists strongly believe that deforestation contributes to the greenhouse effect -- or heating of the earth from increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. As we destroy forests, we lose their ability to change carbon dioxide into oxygen.‎ ‎ Carbon dioxide levels could double within the next half-century, warming the earth by as much as 4.5 degrees. The result? A partial melt-down of polar ice caps, raising sea levels as much as 24 feet; even 15 feet could threaten anyone living within 35 miles of the coast. Unbelievable? Maybe. But scientists warn that by the time we realise the severe effects of tropical deforestation, it will be 20 years ‎ too late.‎ ‎ Can tropical deforestation affect our everyday lives? Now, you should have got the answer.‎ ‎11. The underlined word "synthetics" probably means .‎ ‎ A. natural rubber B. tropical materials ‎ C. man-made material D. commercial rubber ‎12. In the last paragraph the author tries to .‎ ‎ A. tell people how to avoid the tropical deforestation ‎ B. persuade people to buy something synthetic ‎ C. show us how important it is to protect the tropical forests ‎ D. let people realise the effect of tropical deforestation ‎13. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?‎ ‎ A. The forests are losing their function in turning carbon dioxide into oxygen.‎ ‎ B. Many of our daily uses are related to the tropical forests.‎ ‎ C. Tropical plants can be used to make industrial products.‎ ‎ D. High carbon dioxide levels will make the earth warmer.‎ ‎14. The author's attitude towards the tropical deforestation is .‎ ‎ A. puzzling B. cold C. supporting D. opposed ‎15. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?‎ ‎ A. Tropical Forests B. the value of Tropical Forests C. Tropical‎ ‎Forests and Our Life D. The Greenhouse Effects ‎【参考答案】11—15、CCADC C8 [2013·天津卷] -----B Last night's meteor(流星)shower left many people in the community dissatisfied and demanding answers.According to Gabe Rothschild, Emerald Valley's mayor, people gathered in the suburbs of the city, carrying heavy telescopes, expecting to watch the brightly burning meteors passing through the sky. What they found instead was ‎ a sky so brightened by the city's lights that it darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead.‎ ‎“My family was so frustrated,” admitted town resident Duane Cosby.“We wanted to make this an unforgettable family outing, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment.”‎ Astronomers—scientists who study stars and planets—have been complaining about this problem for decades. They say that light pollution prevents them from seeing objects in the sky that they could see quite easily in the past. They call on people and the government to take measures to fight against it.‎ There is yet a population besides professional and amateur star observers that suffers even more from light pollution. This population consists of birds, bats, frogs, snakes, etc. For example, outdoor lighting severely affects migrating (迁徙的)birds.According to the International Dark-Sky Association,“100 million birds a year throughout North America die in crashes with lighted buildings and towers.”‎ Countless more animal casualties(伤亡) result from the use of artificial lighting.Clearly, people enjoy the benefits of lighting their evenings, but some scientists think it can be harmful for humans, too. They worry that exposure to light while sleeping can increase a person's chances of getting cancer.‎ Emerald Valley is only one community that is becoming aware of the negative effects of light pollution. For years, Flagstaff, Arizona, has enforced lighting regulations in its city in order to assist astronomers at the Lowell Observatory.Similar efforts have been made worldwide, and a movement is underway to remind us to turn off lights when we are not using them, so that other creatures can share the night.‎ ‎41.It happened last night that ________.‎ A. the city's lights affected the meteor watching B.the meteors flew past before being noticed C.the city light show attracted many people D.the meteor watching ended up a social outing ‎ ‎42.What do the astronomers complain about?‎ A.Meteor showers occur less often than before.‎ B.Their observation equipment is in poor repair.‎ C.Light pollution has remained unsolved for years.‎ D.Their eyesight is failing due to artificial lighting.‎ ‎43.What is the author concerned about according to Paragraph 4?‎ A. Everybody seems to be competing with someone at some level. Each week we spend hours playing or watching others compete in sporting activities all over the world. We cannot help being impressed by the level of excellence that these people achieve.‎ In sport and business, competition encourages excellence in performance. Where there is no competition, improvement in performance is less likely. Some level of competition is a have-to in all aspects of life.‎ The following story makes this point.‎ As two friends are hiking in the forest they come across a huge, ferocious and obviously hungry bear. Its next meal has just come into sight, and they are it! The first friend calculates that the bear will catch them in 27.3 seconds. At that point, she panics, realizing there is no escape. She faces her friend, with the fear of death in her eyes. To her amazement, she observes that her friend is not scared at all. On the contrary, her friend is quickly but calmly taking off her hiking boots and putting on running shoes. “What do you think you’re doing?”the first hiker says to her companion. “You’ll never be able to run faster than that bear”.‎ ‎ “That’s true,” says the companion,“but all I have to do is escape, faster than you.”‎ We all compete when the motivation is strong enough. However, competition is not the real purpose of life. Fulfilling the measure of our creation can only be achieved individually.‎ Most of time, we are not in competition with any other person, so we do not have to compare ourselves with others. There is only one person that can fulfill our role and that is us. This means that others cannot beat us to the finish line because there is no race. This is not to say that others do not have a similar role to us, but it is never the same. This is important to understand if we are going to enjoy life. Every human being is unique and cannot be cloned. In this, I am not referring to the body, only to the spirit, soul, or the essence of a person.‎ ‎72. I was 29 and had just received my bachelor’s degree, graduating with honors despite working two jobs and being a wife ‎ and mother. My parents and five-year-old son were in the audience when I walked onto the stage at Ashland‎ ‎University to get my diploma. I was so excited and proud to be starting a teaching career and contributing more to my family’s well-being.‎ But when I got home that evening, there was a note from my husband written on the back of an envelope. It basically said he had come to get his clothes and wouldn’t be back. We’d been having trouble, but the finality of that note still came as a shock. He had emptied our bank account. We were horribly in debt. I had quit my previous jobs in expectation of interviewing for a teaching position. Plus, I was eight months pregnant.‎ I had my son, and I was about to bring a new life into the world, so despite my deep sadness, I had to go on. The next morning, I woke up, put my feet on the floor, took a deep breath, fixed breakfast, and basically did everything I always did. I used my routine to keep me moving. After being in the military for six years, I guess you can say I relied on my training, like all good soldiers do in tough situations. One small step after one small step was the way I bounced back. ‎ And in the seven years since, I’ve continued moving forward. I got a job as a kindergarten teacher, earned a master’s degree in education, and watched my babies grow to twelve and seven. I certainly would never have chosen to put them through this, but looking back, I’m glad it happened to me when it did. It helped me find my voice and myself a lot sooner. It helped me grow independent, confident, and strong—things I’m hopefully instilling(灌输) now in my children.‎ ‎11.
