A
Almost no one can resist a good mystery novel or detective novel, so these novels sell thousands of copies each year. And many readers regard famous mystery author Agatha Christie as Queen of Crime, whose stories are known for their tense atmosphere and strong psychological suspense and have a great effect on the English mystery novels.
Christie was born in September 1890 in England. When she was growing up, her mother often told her stories. Christie loved these stories, which took her into a world of fantasy. Christie’s mother also encouraged her to write from a young age and also took her to travel a lot.
She married Archie Christie in 1914 at the beginning of World War Ⅰ. During the war, Christie wrote her first detective story: The Mysterious Affair at Styles. She chose the crime, and then invented a detective named Hercule Poirot, ranking second to Sherlock Holmes, to solve it. She sent the book to a publisher, but it was rejected.
After the war ended, Christie sent her book to more publishers, and finally, in 1920, one published it. She earned just $25 for it. Over the next few years, Christie wrote more books and short stories, gaining experience as a writer. In spite of her literary success, life was not going well at home. In 1928, Archie and Agatha got a divorce(离婚). A short time later, she met a young archaeologist, Max Mallowan. After getting married in 1930, they began to spend some time each year in the Middle East, which provided settings for some of Christie’s novels, such as Murder at the Vicarage(1930), Murder on the Orient Express (1934)and Death on the Nile(1939).
Christie continued writing for the rest of her life. When she died in January 1976, readers around the world mourned(哀悼)her death. But her tales of mystery continue to be loved by new generations of readers. They’ve been translated into hundreds of languages and are selling well today and outsold only by the Bible

It is not so long ago that the extended family lived under the same roof. Children grew up knowing their cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents, and other relatives. These children felt connected.
In these not toolongago times people were connected to their food. Most people grew their own vegetables and fruit. Many families had a house cow for milk, cheese, butter and cream.
Most families also had meat animals. When visitors came unexpectedly, dad would be sent out back to kill the chicken for dinner. Everyone was involved in cooking and mealtimes were a social event. When the meal ended, most of the family were involved in cleaning up and washing up.
How different is the situation today?
12
The fast life is all around us—fast food, fast cars, fast conversations, fast families, fast holidays. Our fast paced life has weakened these connections. We have been fooled into thinking we need to, or even must, be fast and have what the “fast life” gives us. Stress is leading to many new health problems.
The solution is the Slow Movement. It aims to deal with the problem of “time poverty” through making connections. It supports a growing cultural shift towards slowing down. It has spread to more than sixty countries and become a worldwide movement.
The Slow Movement tells us that we need to slow down and connect with our life. We need connection to people—ourselves, our family, our community, our friends—to food, to places(where we live), and to life. By being part of the Slow Movement, many people have known how they lost connection to most aspects of their life and to the natural world and rhythms around them. And more importantly, they have reconnected—they have lived a new connected lifestyle.

根据文章第五段第三句“We have been fooled into thinking

My students often tell me that they don’t have “enough time” to do all their schoolwork.
My reply is often a brief “You_have_as_much_time_as_the_president.” I tell them that “not enough time” is not an acceptable explanation of not getting something done.
Once in graduate school, I tried to prove to one of my professors by saying that I was working hard. His answer to me was, “That’s irrelevant(无关的). What’s important is the quality of your work.”
If you analyze the matter, you can identify two parts of the problem: There is, of course, the matter of “time”, which we can think of as fixed. Then there is the problem of “work” during that time. But, as my professor suggested, it’s not how
12
hard one works but the quality of the product that’s important.
That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. That concept is perhaps best explained by a sign I once saw on the wall in someone’s office:“Don’t work harder. Work smarter.” There is a lot of sense in that idea.
If you can’t get more time, the only solution is to improve the quality of the work. That means thinking of ways to get more out of the same time than we might otherwise get. That should lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since “work” for students usually means “homework”, the expression “work habits” should be read as “study habits”.
Then, as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading and writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that pay off in all your studies.
1.From the passage, we know that the author is probably ________.
A.a poet B.an educator
C.a novelist D.an engineer
2.What does the underlined sentence “You have as much time as the president.” mean?
A.There are twentyfour hours in the day for everyone.
B.The president always has more time than students.
C.Students don’t have enough time to do all their schoolwork.
D.Students can get everything done well as the president.
3.According to the passage, working smarter is to ________.
12
A.work harder and harder
B.get your time fixed
C.get more time
D.improve the quality of the work
2.解析:选A。
根据第六段第一句“If you can’t get more time, the only solution is to improve the quality of the work.”
