【甘肃省嘉峪关市一中 2013 模拟】 D
Even plants can run a fever, especially when they're under attack by insects or
disease. But unlike human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet
away—straight up. A decade ago, adopting the infrared(红外线)scanning technology
developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came
up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under
stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide(杀虫剂)spraying rather
than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don't have
pest problems.
Even better, Paley's Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems
before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night,
an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed
into a colourcoded map showing where plants were running “fevers”. Farmers could
then spotspray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.
The bad news is that Paley's company closed down in 1984, after only three years.
Farmers resisted the new technology and longterm backers were hard to find. But with
the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning,
Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt the
technology works. “This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land
in the United States, ” says George Oerther of Texas A & M. Ray Jackson, who recently
retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could
be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial backing
which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.

(London)—If it really is what’s on the inside that counts, then a lot of thin
people might be in trouble.
Some doctors now think that the internal fat surrounding important organs like
the heart or liver could be as dangerous as the external fat which can be noticed
more easily.
“Being thin doesn’t surely mean you are not fat,” said Dr Jimmy Bell at Imperial
College. Since 1994, Bell and his team have scanned nearly 800 people with MRI machines
to create “fat maps” showing where people store fat.
According to the result, people who keep their weight through diet rather than
exercise are likely to have major deposits of internal fat, even if they are slim.
Even people with normal Body Mass Index scores can have surprising levels of fat
deposits inside. Of the women, as many as 45 percent of those with normal BMI scores
(20 to 25) actually had too high levels of internal fat. Among men, the percentage
was nearly 60 percent.
According to Bell, people who are fat on the inside are actually on the edge of
being fat. They eat too many fatty and sugary foods, but they are not eating enough
to be fat. Scientists believe we naturally store fat around the belly first, but at
some point, the body may start storing it elsewhere.
Docto rs are unsure about the exact dangers of internal fat, but some think it
has something to do with heart disease and diabetes. They want to prove that internal
fat damages the body’s communication systems.
The good news is that internal fat can be easily burned off through exercise or
even by improving your diet. “If you want to be healthy, there is no short cut.
Exercise has to be an important part of your lifestyle,” Bell said.

13. According to the passage, which of the following is WRONG?
A. Exercise can help to reduce the internal fat.
B. People can get rid of internal fat by improving diet.
C. Men are more likely to have too much internal fat.
D. People with heart disease all have internal fat.
14. From the last paragraph, we can find that _____.
A. whether internal fat can lead to disease has been proved
B. exercise plays in important role in people’s life for keeping healthy

The rising costs of health care have become a problem for many countries in the
world. To deal with this problem, it is recommended that a big part of the government's
health budget be used for health education and disease prevention instead of treatment.
Actually, many kinds of diseases are preventable in many ways and preventing a disease
is usually much cheaper than treating it. For example, people could avoid catching
a cold if they dressed warmly when the weather starts getting cold. But many people
get sick because they fail to do so, and have to spend money seeing a doctor.
Daily habits like eating more healthy food would have kept millions of families
from becoming bankrupt if the patients had taken measures for early prevention. For
instance, keeping a balanced diet, such as not consuming too much animal fat and
insuring a steady intake of vegetables and fruits, seems to be quite important.[来源:Zxxk.Com]
One very effective and costless way of prevention is regular exercise, which is
necessary for a healthy mind and body. Regular exercise, such as running, walking,
and playing sports is a good way to make people feel better or reduce stress.
In addition, health education plays a key role in improving people's health. By
giving people more information about health, countries could help people understand
the importance of disease prevention and ways to achieve it. For example, knowing
one's family medical history is an effective way to help keep healthy. Information
about health problems among close relatives will make them aware of what they should
do to prevent certain diseases through lifestyle changes, which will work before it
is too late.
However, stressing disease prevention does not mean medical treatment is
unimportant. After all, prevention and treatment are just two different means toward
the same effect. In conclusion, we could save money on health care and treat patients
more successfully if our country spends more money on health prevention and education.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中,选出最佳选项。
(A)
It is easy for us to tell our friends from our enemies. But can other animals
do the same? Elephants can! They can use their sense of vision and smell to tell the
difference between people who pose a threat and those who do not.
In Kenya, researchers found that elephants react differently to clothing worn
by men of the Maasai and Kamba ethnic groups.Young Maasai men spear animals and thus
pose a threat to elephants; Kamba men are mainly farmers and are not a danger to
elephants.
In an experiment conducted by animal scientists, elephants were first presented
with clean clothing or clothing that had been worn for five days by either a Maasai
or a Kamba man. When the elephants detected the smell of clothing worn by a Maasai
man, they moved away from the smell faster and took longer to relax than when they
detected the smells of either clothing worn by Kamba men or clothing that had not
been worn at all.
Garment color also plays a role, though in a different way.In the same study,
when the elephants saw red clothing not worn before, they reacted angrily, as red
is typically worn by Maasai men.Rather than running away as they did with the smell,
the elephants acted aggressively toward the red clothing]
The researchers believe that the elephants’ emotional reactions are due to their
different interpretations of the smells and the sights.Smelling a potential danger
means that a threat is nearby and the best thing to do is run away and hide.Seeing
a potential threat without its smell means that risk is low. Therefore, instead of
showing fear and running away, the elephants express their anger and become
aggressive.

and Maasai people?

D.Both Kamba and Maasai people traditionally wear red clothing.
2.How did the elephants react to smell in the study?
A.They attacked a man with the smell of new clothing.
B.They needed time to relax when smelling something unfamiliar.
C.They became anxious when they smelled Kamba-scented clothing.
D.They were frightened and ran away when they smelled their enemies.
3.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Elephants use sight and smell to detect danger.
B.Elephants attack people who wear red clothing.
C.Scientists are now able to control elephants’ emotions.
D.Some Kenyan tribes understand elephants’ emotions very well.
4.What can be inferred about the elephant’s behavior from this passage? [来源:学&科&网 Z&X&X&K]
