[1]Getting less sleep has become a bad habit for most American kids. According to a new survey (调查) by the National Sleep Foundation, 51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 pm or later on school nights,
even though they have to get up early. Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7 to 12yearolds said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school.
[2]How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age. Babies need a lot of rest; most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most schoolage children, ten hours is ideal (理想的). But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10 to 12yearolds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.
[3]“More children are going to bed with TVs on, and there are more opportunities (机会) to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr. Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical. Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones not only make teenagers' bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm.
[4]Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to. Three years ago, schools in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am. Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results.
25.What is the new National Sleep Foundation survey on?
A.American kids' sleeping habits.
B.Teenagers' sleeprelated diseases.
C.Activities to prevent sleeplessness.
D.Learning problems and lack of sleep.
26.How many hours of sleep do 11yearolds need every day?
A.7 hours. B.8 hours.
C.10 hours. D.18 hours.
27.Why do teenagers go to sleep late according to Carskadon?
A.They are affected by certain body chemicals.
B.They tend to do things that excite them.
C.They follow their parents' examples.
D.They don't need to go to school early.

选C 根据文章第二段的“For most schoolage children, ten hours is ideal (理想的).”
选B 根据第三段第一句和“She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep.”
例如第27题,由题干中的人名Carskadon迅速定位到第三段的第一、二句,经过查找,“get kids all excited”与选项B中的“excite them”相符。
1.ideal adj. 理想的
2.opportunity n. 机会
3.develop v.
6.be pleased with 对……

A
(2018·湖北八校联考)I was born on the 17th of November 1828, in the village of Nam Ping, which is about four miles southwest of Macao, and is located on Pedro Island lying west of Macao, from which it is separated by a channel of half a mile wide.
As early as 1834, an English lady, Mrs. Gutzlaff, wife of a missionary to China, came to Macao. Supported by the Ladies' Association in London for the promotion of female education in India and the East, she immediately took up the work of starting a girls' school for Chinese girls, which was soon followed by the opening of a boys' school.
Mrs. Gutzlaff's comprador (买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff's school and it was doubtlessly through his influence and means that my father got me admitted into the school. It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed. Most certainly such a step would have been more suitable for Chinese public opinion, taste,
and the wants of the country, than to allow me to attend an English school. Moreover, a Chinese belief is the only avenue in China that leads to political promotion, influence, power and wealth. I can only guess that as foreign communication with China was just beginning to grow, my parents hoped that it might be worthwhile to put one of their sons to learning English. In this way he might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and diplomatic (外交的) world. I am wondering if that influenced my parents to put me into Mrs. Gutzlaff's school. As to what other sequences it has eventually brought about in my later life, they were entirely left in the hands of God.
1.How was the author admitted to Mrs. Gutzlaff's school?
A.Through his father's request.
B.Through his father's friend's help.
C.Through his own efforts at exams.
D.Through Mrs. Gutzlaff's influence.
Gutzlaff's comprador (买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that ... got me admitted into the school.”
2.Why did the author's parents put him into an English school?
A.It met with Chinese public opinion.
B.An English school was more influential.
C.He could become a successful interpreter.
D.Foreign trade with China was developing fast.
3.What did the author think of his parents' decision to put him into an English school?
A.It was skeptical. B.It was wonderful.
C.It was thoughtful. D.It was mysterious.
根据第三段第三句中的“It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school ...”
4.What does the underlined word “sequences” in the last sentence probably mean?
A.Results. B.Orders.
C.Series. D.Progress.
故选A项。

The end of the school year is in sight — Christmas cards, candy canes and of course, endofyear reports.
While most parents welcome an assessment of their kids' performance, they do not expect their own input to be evaluated. But a school in the U.K. is changing that. As well as assessing their students, they are dishing out grades to moms and dads. Parents that are really involved (参与) in their kids' education are rewarded with an A, and parents that haven't done their bit get a disappointing D.
The school, Greasley Beauvale Primary in Nottinghamshire, uses criteria such as whether moms and dads have attended school events such as plays and parentteacher evenings to decide on the grade. The school's principal, Donna Chambers, said that the scheme had been well received.
“There were some critics, but my response was ‘well, it can't do any harm’. Between 15 percent and 20 percent of parents started out in the lower categories but now that has been reduced to just two percent,” she explained.
Chambers hopes that the scheme will help motivate parental involvement. “The system is important because you have got to get the parents on board from day one. That onehour initial conversation saying they could improve will pay_dividends for the rest of that child'
s academic life,” she said.
But while the scheme may be well intentioned, it is likely to be connected with parent shaming. There are lots of reasons why some moms and dads might not be involved in school activities such as work commitments, looking after younger children or caring for elderly relatives.
And of course, being involved in your kid's education doesn't begin and end at school. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes from helping with homework to keeping uniforms freshly laundered. And what about all the parents who stayed up sewing special costumes at the last minute? Surely that earns a gold star instead of a grade!
5.What do schools usually do at the end of the school year?
A.Evaluate kids' performance. B.Make Christmas cards.
C.Divide candies. D.Grade parents.
故选A项。
6.What does the school's principal Chambers say about the scheme?
A.It uses criteria to assess kids.
B.It has gained much acceptance.
C.It gives parents further education.
D.It improves kids' motivation for learning.

(2018·江西重点中学联考)Up to 60 Shanghai math teachers are to be brought to England to raise standards, in an exchange arranged by the Department for Education. The announcement comes as a campaign is launched to raise adult math skills. A survey of 2,300 adults for the numeracy campaign found that over a third thought their level of math had held them back. An accompanying economic analysis said that a lack of math skills cost the U.K. 20 billion pounds per year.
The plan to bring 60 Englishspeaking math teachers from Shanghai is an attempt to learn from a city that has been the top performance in the OECD's Pisa tests. The OECD says that children of poor families in Shanghai are on average better at math than middle class children in the U.K. The Shanghai teachers, expected to arrive from the autumn, will help share their teaching methods, support pupils who are struggling and help to train other teachers.
“We have some smart math teachers in this country but what I saw in Shanghai — and other Chinese cities — has only strengthened my belief that we can learn from them,” said education minister, Elizabeth Truss, who has recently visited Shanghai, accompanied by head teachers from England. “They have a cando attitude to math — and I want us to match that, and their performance.” She stressed the economic significance of raising math standards, for individuals and the country. “As part of our longterm economic plan, we are determined to drive up standards in our schools and give our young people the skills they need to succeed in the global race. Good math qualifications have the greatest earnings potential and provide the strongest protection against unemployment,” said the education minister.
