You say by car? No. Train? Wrong again. Airplane? I’m sorry, but you’re not even close. The most popular way of going from one place to another is by bicycle. And it is a surprise to most Americans. After all, we see thousands of cars each day. We don’t see nearly as many bikes.‎ In the United States most bike riders are either young people or adults bicycling for exercise.‎ About nine million bikes are sold in America each year. Nearly three million are sold to adults. The rest are to children. But in the rest of the world, far more people use the bike as their main way of traveling. They ride bikes to work, to school, and to stores.‎ Bicycles have been around for a long time — about 300 years. You would not like to ride around on those early bikes, though. They didn’t have any pedals (脚蹬). The riders had to push along with their feet. And this bike only went straight ahead. There was no way to turn the front wheel. If the rider wanted to change direction, he or she had to get off and move the bicycle.‎ When pedals were put on the front wheels, riding became easier. The most popular kind of bike in the late 1800s had a very high front wheel and a small back wheel. It was a long fall to the ground!‎ Another problem was that there were no rubber tires (橡胶轮胎). It’s no wonder that one bike was called the “Boneshaker.” Then in the 1880s, air-filled rubber tires were put on the bicycle’s wheels. Since then the bicycle has not changed very much. Of course bikes come in different shapes and colors now, but the main design is still the same.‎ 1. Why did people dislike riding early bikes?‎ A. They were hard to control. B. They were dangerous.‎ C. They were too large. D. They were too high for many people.‎ 2. The underlined word “Boneshaker” in the last paragraph shows the bike was .‎ A. old B. uncomfortable C. broken D. slow 3. The author wrote this text mainly to .‎ A. inform readers about the history of bicycles B. introduce the new shapes of bicycles C. encourage readers to bicycle for exercise D. warn readers about bicycle safety B Edmund Halley, an astronomer in the late 1600s, was very interested in comets. In 1682, he noticed a comet that was especially bright and large. He spent a long time studying it. Then it disappeared from view. Based on his research, Halley guessed that this bright comet would return in 1758 or 1759. This was about 75 years after he first saw the comet. This same bright comet returned right on time. However, Halley died in 1742 and was unable to see it. Not long after that, the comet was named “Halley’s comet” in his honor.‎ Scientists who had been following Halley’s work began to look back through history. They learned that for centuries there had been mention of a comet in the sky about every 75 years, going all the way back to 467 B.C. Often, the return of Halley’s comet seemed to coincide (同时发生)‎ with important events in history. For many years people believed that Halley’s comet caused catastrophes (大灾难), from sickness to war.‎ Now, scientists know that comets do not cause bad events, and they have learned more about comets. All comets are made of a head and a tail. Some comets have longer tails. The head is made mostly of ice, plus some dust and pieces of rock. U.S. astronomer Fred Whipple used the phrase “dirty snowballs” to describe comets. Comets move through the sky very quickly. However, their speed depends on how close they are to the Sun. When Halley’s comet is farthest from the Sun, it moves about 2,040 miles per hour. When it is closest to the Sun, it moves at an amazing 122,000 miles per hour!‎ People today remain attracted by this comet. The most recent visit from Halley’s comet was in 1985-1986. This time, two spacecraft, Vega 1 and Vega 2, got a close look at the comet as it raced around the Sun. Halley’s comet should next return in 2061. Who knows what high-tech equipment will be around to study it then?‎ 1. From the first paragraph, we can learn that .‎ A. Halley saw the same comet twice in his life B. Halley had known a lot about comets before 1682‎ C. Halley’s guess about the comet’s return proved correct D. Halley named the comet he found “Halley’s comet”‎ 2. In ancient times, people often considered Halley’s comet .‎ A. a star worth seeing B. a star bringing bad luck C. a star with a high temperature D. a star visiting the Earth once in a lifetime 3. The third paragraph mainly tells us .‎ A. how long it takes comets to circle around the Sun B. where comets can be seen C. why comets fly at high speeds D. what comets are like 4. The question in the last paragraph mainly shows .‎ A. high-tech equipment is needed to study Halley’s comet B. people expect to see the return of Halley’s comet more often C. research on Halley’s comet will never be over A. people are ready for the return of Halley’s comet in 2061‎ C ‎ ‎★Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival Where: Becket, Massachusetts When: June 15 -- Aug. 24‎ Each summer, this influential dance center presents a number of classes and performances by more than 50 companies from around the world. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and they seldom give their children a free hand.‎ It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they tend to forget how they themselves felt when young. For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Older people worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected. When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.‎ Young people often make their parents angry with their choice in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble: it is just that they feel cut off from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own, and if their parents do not like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.‎ Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say, “ Yes” to what you do. All you want is to be felt alone and do what you like. It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control. If you plan to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.‎ 1. According to the passage, young people prefer to .‎ A. ask for advice before they really start to do anything.‎ B. be very strict with themselves C. think in the same way as their parents do.‎ D. do things without thinking carefully ahead.‎ 2. Young people like to have clothes, entertainment and music in their way, because .‎ A. they want to try on something new and look different from the older.‎ B. they try to get their parents to believe them.‎ C. they want to test whether they are cleverer than old people.‎ D. they want to make their parents happy.‎ 3. According to the passage, young people want to make a new culture of their own, because ‎ .‎ A. they want to show they have grown up.‎ B. they don’t feel they belong to the world of the older people.‎ C. they feel they are as clever as old people.‎ D. they do not want to get into trouble.‎ 4. If a young man intends to control his own life, it’s better for him to .‎ A. ask for his parents’ permission.‎ B. hold himself responsible for everything he does.‎ C. be completely under his parents’ control.‎ D. do everything according to his own wish.‎ 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Food safety is a problem in all places around the world and people in different areas of the world prepare foods in different ways.
