录音材料及参考答案:
(Text 1)
W: Thank goodness you’re here. I’ve been waiting for 3 days to get the book.
M: Well, don’t blame me. It was my boss that forgot all about it.
(Text 2)
M: Mary, the science homework is due in two days.
W: Oh, dear! That can’t be so!
(Text 3)
M: It’s a shame that you didn’t win your tennis match.
M: I might have won if I listened to my coach.
(Text 4)
W: Can I come to see you at 10:00, Professor Brown?
M: I’m sorry, Susan, but I’ll be meeting my students then. Why not come half an hour
later?
(Text 5)
W: This is the best dinner I’ve ever had.
M: How about the soup then?
W: I’ve never tasted anything better.
(Text 6)
M: Time to eat!
W: Oh, I’m starving. Where is Mom?
M: Mom put me in charge of dinner because she’s not feeling well tonight.
W: But what is it ...and that smell?
M: It’s pizza. I just followed an old family recipe here, and ...
W: Let me see that ...Oh, you’re missing a page!
M: Oh, uh, well, uh ...well I couldn’t find the second page of the recipe. But don’t
worry, I have plenty of experience around the house.
W: Let me try it. Oh, you put too much salt in it and it’s burnt.
M: Well, I think we’d better go out for dinner.
(Text 7)
M: Oh, hi, Fred! I didn’t know whether to save you a place or not. Why are you so late?
M: It’s our math teacher. She always keeps us in class until ten past ten.
W: Doesn’t she know that you’re supposed to get out at ten?

M: I guess so. But she never looks at her watch. She just keeps talking.
W: Don’t the students complain about it? I would say something.
M: No. Everybody is too polite.
W: Well, you could try and talk to her.
M: Maybe. But I’m afraid she might feel hurt.
W: Well, it all depends on how and when you say it. If you tell her about it in a friendly
way when she’s not busy, she might be thankful. She might even ask you to remind her
of the time in the future.
M: Really? That would be wonderful. Thanks for your advice.
(Text 8)
W: Now, Mr. Martin. I’ve just read your own doctor’s report. So you haven’t been feeling
very well lately, is that right?
M: It’s...it’s my leg, doctor. My right leg. I keep getting a strange pain in it.
W: Could you tell me what the pain is like?
M: It’s like....like boiling water running down my leg. It’s been getting worse lately,
too. I’ve been losing sleep.
W: You mean the pain’s been keeping you awake?
M: Yes, that’s right. It’s been keeping me awake.
W: Now, tell me, how long have you had this trouble?
M: The pain? For about a year now.
W: Hmm... Have you been getting tired lately after you have had a walk? For example, have
you been getting a big short of breath, perhaps?
M: Why, yes! Yes, I have, doctor!
W: Hmm...I think we’d better give you a few tests here in the hospital.
M: Do you think it’s serious, doctor?
W: Probably not.
M: But... Doctor Cook, my local doctor, thinks it’s only that I’ve been working too hard
lately.
W: That could be the reason. Don’t worry, we’ll find out soon.
(Text 9)
M: Hotlines are very common in today’s life, do you think so?
W: Of course.
M: Most of them are about amusement, in my opinion. But some of them are very important
in our daily life.
W: Is that true?
M: Certainly. A free hotline offering help to teenagers was opened in Guangdong.
W: Can you tell me something more about it?
M: It is the first part of the national hotline system to help to protect teens’ rights.

help. More than 100 experts are ready to offer help.
W: Then what is the telephone number?
M: Call 12355 if you are in Guangzhou and 020-12355 if you are outside.
W: Oh, it will be a help to teenagers.
(Text 10)
Well, John, I’m trying to think what else I should be telling you. As you know, I’m going
to a conference in London. I hope to have a little time to look around. It’s a great city!
I do hope I can manage to get to at least some of the theatres and museums. I’m looking
forward to all the things I have to do at the conference, too. I’m giving a paper on Tuesday,
the 26th and there are a couple of really exciting events planned later in the conference
program. I hope to meet up with an old teacher of mine at the conference. She taught English
literature at my old high school and we’ve kept in touch through letters over the years.
She teaches now at the University of Durham, and I’m really looking forward to seeing
her again.
Would you do me a favour please? I haven’t had time to cancel an appointment. It was made
a long time ago and I forgot about it until this morning. It’s with my dentist, for a
check up on Thursday, the 28th.Could you please call the dentist at 816 2525 and cancel
the appointment for me? Thanks a lot, John. The last thing. When you leave the house, make
sure the windows and doors are shut. Have fun! I’ll see you when I get back. This is your
friend Peter, saying goodbye.
