When Lily Born was just 7, she noticed her grandfather, who has Parkinson’s disease, was
knocking over his cup a lot. Lily felt bad her grandmother had to clean up spills( 洒出物 ) so often.
Lily thought his cup would be less prone to spill if it had “legs”, so she drew a picture of
such a cup for her dad, Joe Born. “He took it seriously and told me, ‘That’s your invention. Sign
and date it’, which I did,” she said. “We went to Grandma and Grandpa’s house and made a
prototype( 样品 ). This was just a plastic one, but it worked!” Later, Lily noticed her dad was always
spilling coffee on his computer’s keyboard, so she made him a ceramic( 陶制的 ) cup with legs. He
loved it, too.
Though her family enjoyed using the cups, Lily didn’t see them as more than gifts and didn’t
place much value on them. She was also struggling in school. “I was afraid of failing fourth grade. It
had kind of destroyed my confidence, to be honest,” Lily said. “One day I asked my dad, ‘What

am I good at?’ He asked me if I wanted to put the cups into production. It would make me see being
an inventor was a real thing and something to be proud of.”
The Borns flew to Jingdezhen, China to find a factory that would produce the cups and make
more prototypes. “We’ve sold something like 1,000 cups,” Lily said. “People are buying them
for elderly relatives and people with mobility issues.”
As for Lily, doing business at such a young age helped her overcome her shyness. “Watching
Lily blossom over this whole adventure has been an excitement for me as a dad,” Joe said. “I just
can’t put into words how good it feels to see her have confidence.”

For its critics, the arrival of the London Underground marked the moment the capital got
into a messy state. The idea of an underground train had first been formed in the 1840s and one of
the leading advocates was Londoner Charles Pearson, but work did not begin on what became the
Metropolitan Railway until 1860.
What critics called “the Drain” was not universally popular. Some warned that the tunnels
( 隧道 ) would fall apart under the weight of the houses above; others thought an underground railway
so terrible that criminals should be forced to take round trips. And the construction work angered the
locals. “London would lose its charm forever with this ugly project,” one said.
高一英语 第 6 页 (共 12 页)
But by January 1863, the first trains were ready to roll. On Friday 9 January, a special train
packed with politicians made the first journey— though the Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, refused
to jointhen, explaining that at 78, he wanted to spend as much time above ground as possible. All went
well, and the next day, Saturday 10 January, it opened to the public.
To general astonishment, the capital’s new Underground proved a great success. On that first
day alone, 38,000 people walked deep down into the earth to ride between Farringdon Street and
Bishop’s Road, Paddington. The carriages were divided into three classes and lit by gas; as one
pleasantly surprised passenger put it, they were “so large that a man who is six feet tall may stand up
straight with his hat on”.
“For the first time in the history of the world,” said The Daily News, “men can travel in
pleasant carriages, and with great comfort, lower down than gas pipes and water pipes.”
28. What did Charles Pearson do?
A. He designed the Metropolitan Railway.
B. He showed his dissatisfaction with London.
C. He built a part of the London Underground.
D. He supported building the London Underground.
29. Why were people against the London Underground in the beginning?
A. Criminals did most of the construction work.
B. It provided single trips instead of return trips.
C. It was too new to be readily accepted by the public.
D. Lots of accidents happened in tunnels universally.
30. How was the politicians’ underground ride in 1863?
A. It was smooth. B. It was lots of fun.
C. It was quite frightening. D. It was totally disorganized.
31. What was the right description of the first underground train?
A. Its height was exactly six feet.
B. Its lights were powered by electricity.
C. Its floors had lots of gas pipes and water pipes.
D. Its carriages were more comfortable than expected.

A favorite dish for purple sea urchins( 海胆 ) living off the coast of California is kelp( 巨藻 ). The
problem is, those kelp forests are shrinking rapidly and that’s hurting the oceanic ecosystem. So a
高一英语 第 7 页 (共 12 页)
group of scientists carried out an experiment to see if these sea urchins can themselves become a dish.
Just off the coast, three divers get ready to jump in. They’re students from Moss Landing Marine
Laboratories. The task: Count purple sea urchins. Their professor, Luke Gardner expects they’ll find
plenty of urchins. And that’s not a good thing. “What they do is they just eat everything in sight,”
Gardner says. These purple creatures are eating up California’s kelp forests, which provide food and
shelter for numerous sea animals.
The problem began around 2014. That’s when Gardner says warmer ocean temperatures began
affecting the reproduction of kelp. It’s also when a disease killed off sunflower sea stars, a killer of
purple sea urchins. Therefore, the purple sea urchin population grows very fast.
The divers bring Gardner quite a lot of purple sea urchins. What’s inside is the part we eat, the
uni ( 海胆黄 ) —a type of delicious food in Japanese cuisine. “The problem with these purple sea
urchins is that when you open them up, sometimes there’s nothing in there. And they might be a little
smaller compared to market-sized urchins,” says Gardner.
Then, it is time for the taste test. The class crowds into the kitchen of the restaurant Aubergine.
Here, chef Justin Cogley serves uni from around the world. He opens up the purple sea urchins, taking
the orange uni out and prepares it on a fried potato. “Honestly, it’s rich and buttery,” Cogley says.
His conclusion? He’ll serve it.
It’s a tasty end to the project. But this could be just the beginning. A company called
Urchinomics has been selling its human-raised urchins in Japan. Now, it is working to secure a site in
California. It’s all in an effort to save the state’s kelp forests and help the thousands of animals that
depend on them.
32. What is the scientists’ experiment about?
A. Turning purple sea urchins into a dish.
B. Finding new food for purple sea urchins.
C. Discovering the causes of a poor ecosystem.
D. Studying the ecosystem of the coast of California.
33. How is Paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A. By presenting research findings.
B. By following time order.
C. By analyzing causes.
D. By making comparisons.
34. According to Gardner, what’s a problem with purple sea urchins?
A. Their uni tastes like bad butter. B. They don’t all have uni inside.
C. They can’t be raised by humans. D. Their size is beyond the market standard.
高一英语 第 8 页 (共 12 页)
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Save California’s Kelp by Eating Purple Sea Urchins.
B. A Scientist’s Cooking Dream Comes True in California.
C. Kelp Forests Suffer Because of Japanese Cuisine.
D. Clean Up the Sea by Restoring Kelp Forests.
