(2017·第二次全国大联考)
One day in 1942,I talked a friend into walking to the nearby town of Aldeburgh. On
our return trip,as we were nearing our bomber base,we saw Doris walking her bike
in the opposite direction. She said she had planned to meet a soldier for a date,
but he hadn’t shown up.I offered to accompany her home to Aldeburgh. She agreed,
and after biking back together,we decided to meet again.
The following day,Doris’ original date stopped by her house and he asked Doris
why she hadn’t shown up.It turned out that he was stationed(驻扎) at a fighter base
close by—not the bomber base,as Doris had thought. He asked if they could make another
date, but Doris said she’d already met the fellow she wanted!
Months later, the war ended and my base was shutting down.I went to Aldeburgh
to tell Doris the news. She cycled halfway back to the base with me before we said
our final goodbyes.Doris recalls,“I was heartbroken, knowing I was losing someone
who meant so much to me.”
Unexpectedly,I was transferred to a site in Elveden.Though I was 60 miles away
from Aldeburgh,I would travel far to see Doris! It wasn’t long before we decided
to get married.
We had to wait three months before the military would approve our marriage. When
permission finally came,Doris and I rushed to the local vicar(牧师),who married
us in a church in Aldeburgh.
In 1946,I returned to the States and brought my beautiful bride home. We’ve been
happily married for 67 years and have four sons, eight grandchildren, and two

JOHANNESBURG—They say cats have nine lives. Now a Chinese toad(蟾蜍) has joined
that club of clever survivors.

shipment from China to Cape Town, after jumping into a porcelain candlestick(烛台)
that was made there.South African officials reportedly planned to put down the
creature, fearing it would cause harm as an invasive species if it were let go in
the wild.
But the toad got a last-minute pardon.Mango Airlines,a South African airline,
transported the toad on Friday to Johannesburg for delivery to an animal shelter,
after officials decided to find a way to let the toad live. The two-hour flight was
a breeze compared to the trip from China,a long way of many weeks and thousands of
kilometers across the Indian Ocean.
Airline spokesman Hein Kaiser said the toad got “first-class treatment”,
sitting in a transparent plastic container with escort Brett Glasby,an animal welfare
inspector. There was even a ceremony,in which the toad’s boarding pass was handed
to Glasby.“He was the star of the show on the flight,” Kaiser said of the
amphibious(两栖的) passenger.“I think every passenger stopped to have a look.”
On landing in Johannesburg, the toad was brought out of its container for a
celebrity-style photo shoot.Observers said the brown toad seemed like a cool
customer. It belongs to the Asian Toad species, which breeds during the monsoon(季
风) season. It is believed to have survived the trip from China by hardening its skin
to prevent it from drying out , and also by slowing its breathing and heart
rate—methods that help the species survive in times of drought.
“We’ve had snakes in imported timber and scorpions(蝎子) in fruit. We were
called because the toad was right inside the candlestick, and we had to break it to
get it out,” Glasby, the inspector, told The Star,a South African newspaper.

Despite being used by 1.24 billion people each year, traveling on the Tube in
London can actually be quite lonely.
One citizen, however,is trying to change this,“You get on the Tube and it’s
completely silent and it’s weird,” says Jonathan Dunne, who has started a worldwide
dialogue after giving out badges(徽章) with the words “Tube chat?” last month,

encouraging passengers in London to get talking to one another,“I handed out 500
badges during rush hour in a city of 8 million, expecting most of them to be thrown
away, but after about 24 hours it completely snowballed,” he says.Dunne and his
“Tube chat” campaign have since been reported by media across the world, seeing
TV interviews in Sweden,Brazil and the UK,as well as countless website, newspaper
and magazine appearances.
Although Dunne says he’s received mostly positive feedback, not everyone agrees
with his idea.Londoner Brian Wilson responded with a campaign of his own, handing
out 500 badges with the words “Don’t even think about it” on them.“I can hardly
stand the idea of having to talk to strangers on the Tube on my way to work,” he
told the BBC.Michael Robinson,24,a student from London, agrees.“Being on the Tube
is the only peace and quiet some people get on their journeys to and from work.It
doesn’t need to be spoiled by people coming up and chatting to you,” he says.
“People assume that I just walk up and talk to strangers, which I don’t,but
it’s been a great way to meet people you would never have normally spoken to,”
Dunne says.
So if you ever end up using public transport in the West, why not say hello to
the person next to you?Just make sure to check for a badge first.

Photography has been my interest ever since I was old enough to pick up a camera,
but today I want to share with you the 15 most treasured photos of mine, and I didn’t
take any of them. There were no art directors,no stylists,no chance for reshoots,
not even any regard for lighting. In fact, most of them were taken by random tourists.
My story begins when I was in New York City for a speech, and my wife took a picture
of me holding my daughter on her first birthday. We’re on the corner of the 57th and
5th avenue. We happened to be back in New York exactly a year later,so we decided
to take the same picture.
Well you can see where this is going.Approaching my daughter’s third birthday,
my wife said,“Hey,why don’t you take Sabina back to New York and make it a
father-daughter trip, and continue the ceremony?” This is when we started asking
passing tourists to take the picture.
So these photos are far more than representatives for a single moment,or even
a specific trip. They’re also ways for us to freeze time for one week in October and
reflect on our times and how we change from year to year, and nor just physically,
but in every way.Because while we take the same photo, our viewpoints change, and
she reaches new milestones and I get to see life through her eyes, and how she
communicates with and sees everything. This very focused time we get to spend together
is something we value and expect the entire year.
